Reducing the Harmonics of Static Var Compensator Using Multi-Step Inverter (멀티-스텝 인버터를 이용한 무효전력 보상장치의 고조파 저감)

  • For stabilization and improving power factor in the power lines, various Static Var Compensators(SVC) have been considered to be installed and partly applicated already. With all these merits of the SVC, it stil has demerits, principally evoking harmonic problems. So far, many harmonic reduction type inverters have been used in various parts. In this paper, the reactive power is controlled by amplitude of the output voltage. This paper propose that the multiple voltage source inverter have controllable power factor made by load vary at receive-stage as lagging and leakage control. The theoretical analysis on this system was confirmed through the computer simulation and the experiments.

  • This paper describes a feasibility analysis result of STATCOM application for the Jeiu-Haenam HVDC system. The Jeju-Haenam HVDC system is one of the typical HVDC system interconnected with the low short-circuit-ratio AC system, which is vulnerable to the commutation failure due to the AC voltage variation. STATCOM has been considered as an effective reactive-power compensator to increase short-circuit-ratio of the interconnected AC system. In this study, a simulation model of Jeju-Haenam HVDC system with STATCOM was developed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The developed simulation model was utilized to analyze the dynamic performance analysis of Jeju-Haenam HVDC system with STATCOM. The analysis results show that STATCOM can improve the dynamic performance of Jeju-Haenam HVDC system, such as load-change recovery performance and fault recovery performance.

  • In this paper, the frequency compensator for digital protective relay is introduced. Due to sudden appearance of generation-load or fault in power system, the frequency can deviate from its nominal value. The Orthogonal filter adopted to digital protective relay is exposed to the problem. Therefore, the frequency variation makes a difficult to protective function and power measurement in digital protective relay. The essential property of the proposed algorithm presented is its outstanding immunity to both signal orthogonal component magnitudes and DFT filter gain variations which ensures below 0.05Hz accuracy of estimation. Additionally, the proposed method has excellent characteristics with low signal sampling rate. Based on the frequency estimation, author design under frequency protection relay for generator and verifies its performance with several experimental tests.

  • The unbalanced heavy-loaded elevation-drive system is composed of a hydraulic cylinder, a driving link-mechanism and an equilibrating-mechanism which compensate the static unbalanced moment of the elevation load. The Compensator for the unbalanced moment is composed of a hydrau-pneumatic accumulator and a hydraulic cylinder which act with the elevation cylinder together. Compensation of the variable static-unbalanced moment for the elevation-drive system is very difficult because these mechanisms imply highly nonlinear properties due to air conditioning characteristics and mechanical rotation of the link-mechanism. In this study, through the analysis of the already designed equilibrating-mechanism, the optimal design parameters of the equilibrating-mechanism is suggested.

  • Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) can greatly reinforce power systems through improvement of power transmission capacity and utilization of equipment under the circumstance of continuous load growth and deregulation SVC and STATCOM are shunt FACT devices that have similar static characteristics with Mwhuical Swikhed Capacitor (MSC). The main issue of this paper is the analysis of different dynamic characteristics when STATCOM is solely adopted and when STATCOM is adopted with combination of other reactive power compensator such as SVC and M5C. Furthermore, better application of reactive power compensators can be clarified through analysis of dynamic characteristics of various combinations of reactive power compensators.

  • The line charging is becoming larger due to the expansion of underground cable and extra high voltage lines. It causes reactive power surplus at light load condition which may force generators to operate reluctantly in the under excited mode. This paper proposes the pratical criteria and methodolgy for the shunt reactor planning while suppressing generator's under excited operation.

  • This paper presents the modeling and contingency analysis of Jeju power system. For the analysis of contingency with simulation, thermal power plants, current source type HVDC systems, wind farms, STATCOMs and Jeju power load are modeled by PSCAD/EMTDC program. And three kinds of simulation are carried out. Firstly, two STATCOMSs are in normal operation. Secondly, one STATCOM is in fault. Lastly, all of STATCOMs are in fault. These comparative studies will be useful for evaluating the effectiveness of STATCOM to stabilize for the Jeju power system.

  • In this parer, the parameter for control variable is consist of value that take measured the input line current and input total power-factor, and the compensation susceptance is calculated by its parameters. The compensator can reduce the reactive power generation by the system to zero, thus the input total power-factor is kept on sustaining the unit power- factor.

  • Two control algorithms for synchronizing multiple DC motors are proposed to compensate load variation and gain mismatches. Specifically, a mathematical model of a practical DC servo system is drived and analyzed to see synchronizing effect at the steady-state. Also a compensator is proposed to synchronize multiple motors at the transient-state. As an experimental system, two-axis synchronizing control system is developed and tested to show the validities of our proposed method.
