  • Statement of problem. In distal extension removable partial denture, the preservation of health of abutment teeth is very important, but abutment teeth are subjected to unfavorable stress. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical effects of mandibular removable partial dentures with various prosthetic designs using strain gauge analysis. Material and methods. Artificial teeth of both canines were anchored bilaterally in a mandibular edentulous model made of resin. Bilateral distal extension removable partial dentures with splinted and unsplinted abutments were fabricated. Group 1 : Clasp-retained mandibular removable partial denture with unsplinted abuhnents Group 2 : Clasp-retained mandibular removable partial denture with splinted abutments by 6-unit bridge Group 3 : Bar-retained mandibular removable partial denture Strain gauges were bonded on the labial plate of the mandibular resin model, approximately 2 mm close to the abutments. Two vertical experimental loadings (100N and 200N) were applied subsequently via two miniature load cells that were placed at mandibular first molar regions. Strain measurements were performed and simultaneously monitored from a computer connected to data acquisition system. For within-group evaluations, t-test was used to compare the strain values and for between-group comparisons, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used and Duncan test was used as post hoc comparisons. Results. Strain values increased as the applied load increased from 100N to 200N for all groups (p<.05). The strain values of group 1 and 2 were tensile under loadings. In contrast, strain values of group 3 were compressive in nature. Under 100N loading, group 1 showed higher strain values than group 3 in absolute quantity (p<.05). Under 200N loading, group 3 showed higher strain values than group 1 and 2 in absolute quantity (p<.05). Group 1 showed higher strain values than group 2 (p<.05). Conclusion. Splinting of two isolated abutments by bridge reduced the peri-abutment strain in comparison with unsplinted abutments. Strain of bar-retained removable partial denture increased much more as applied load increased, but was compressive in nature.

  • The expression profiles of inflammatory cytokines viz. interleukins (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-12, granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor, interferon-${\gamma}$ and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ in response to subclinical mastitis in indigenous cattle breed Kankrej (n = 6), Gir (Bos indicus) (n = 12) and crossbred (Bos taurus${\times}$Bos indicus) (n = 7) were investigated using quantitative real time PCR. Significant correlation (p < 0.05) was observed between total bacterial load and somatic cell count (SCC) in all three breeds of cattle. All the cytokines were observed to be up-regulated compared to cows with healthy quarters, however, level of their expression varied among three breeds of cattle. In Kankrej most cytokines were found to be transcribed to higher levels than in other two breeds; the milk had higher load of bacteria but not so high SCC, implying that Kankrej has a higher inherent resistance against mastitis. The results of present study indicated that mammary glands of crossbred cattle are more sensitive to bacterial infection than indigenous breed of cattle as they elicit immune response at lower bacterial load and result into higher SCC. Research on identification of factors responsible for differentially expressed cytokines profiles and use of cytokines as immunomodulatory tools can pave way for formulating control strategies against bovine mastitis.

  • In this paper, each driving motor for leg joints on a robot is controlled by estimating the direction of the legs measuring each joint angle and attitude angle of robot. We used quadruped working robot named TITAN-VIII in order to carry out this experimental study. 4 load cells are installed under the bottom of 4 legs to measure the pressed force on each leg while it's walking. The walking experiments of the robot were performed in 8 different conditions combined with duty factor, the length of a stride, the trajectory height of the foot and walking period of robot. The validity of attitude control for quadruped walking robot is evaluated by comparing the pressed force on a leg and the power consumption of joint driving motor. As a result, it was confirmed that the slip-condition of which the foot leave the ground late at the beginning of new period of the robot during walking process, which means the attitude control of the robot during walking process wasn't perfect only by measuring joint and attitude angle for estimating the direction of the foot.

  • Objectives: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the major etiological agent of cervical cancer, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women worldwide. Screening strategies for reducing the burden of HPV-mediated carcinogenesis are emerging as an effective means for cervical cancer control and prevention in developing countries. Our study, therefore, aimed to identify HPV infection status in North Indian women during random population screening. Methodology: Cervical/vaginal exfoliated cells and/or Pap smear specimens were collected from 890 women of North Indian ethnicity residing in Lucknow and adjoining areas, during random population screening from June 2009-March 2012. HPV viral loads in clinical specimens were determined by the Hybrid Capture (hc)-2 HPV DNA assay, and subsequently, positive/negative/borderline HPV status was calculated. Results: The HPV incidence in the present study was 11.7%. 751 out of a total of 890 women (84.4%) participating in our HPV screening program were HPV negative (HPV -), 104 (11.7%) tested positive (HPV +) while 35 (3.9%) showed borderline (HPV $^*$) infection status. Furthermore, in the HPV + subjects (N=104), 18 (17.3%) showed strong positivity. We observed that HPV positivity tends to increase with age in North Indian women; the higher the viral load with increasing age, higher is the susceptibility to HPV-mediated cervical cancer. Conclusions: HPV viral load/genotyping may help in identifying women at risk of developing cervical cancer. However, cost-effective HPV screening protocols with a wider population coverage are warranted so as to reduce the burden of cervical cancer in women worldwide in the vaccine-era.

  • Landslide of the Whanpyeong Mountain which was occurred at Busan Metropolitan City in 1999 belongs to the category of plane failure. Automatic monitoring system to measure horizontal displacement, pore pressure change and load change has operating from reconstruction stage for evaluating rock slope stability (August, 2000$\~$Feburuary, 2002). As a result of the analysis on the monitoring performance data, it is suggested that infiltrated rain water from pound surface discharges rapidly through cut-slope because pressure head of water decreases rapidly after rainfall while rise of pore pressure is proportional to the amount of rain water. As a result of data analyses for inclinometers and load cells, it seems that slope is stablized be cause ground deformation is rarely detected. The areas especially similar to the study site where landslide is induced by heavy rain fall, change of pore pressure is rapidly analyzed using automatic monitoring system. Therefore, it is considered that automatic monitoring system is very effect for slope stability analysis on important cut-slopes.

  • A battery is the device that transforms the chemical energy into the direct-current electrical energy directly without a mechanical process. Unit cells are connected in series to obtain the required voltage, while being connected in parallel to organize capacity for load current and to decrease the internal resistance for corresponding the sudden shift of the load current. Because the voltage droop down in one set of battery is faster than in tow one, it amy result in the low efficiency of power converter with the voltage drop and cause the system shutdown. However, when the system being driven in parallel, a circular-current can be generated. The changing current differs in each set of battery because the system including batteries, rectifiers and loads is connected in parallel and it makes the charge voltage constant. It is shown that, as a result the new batteries are heated by over-charge and over-discharge, and the over charge current increases rust of the positive grid and consequently shortens the lifetime of the new batteries. The difference between the new batteries and old ones is the amount of internal resistance. In this paper, we can detect the unbalance current using the micro-processor and achieve the balance current by adjusting resistance of each set. The internal resistance of each set becomes constant and the current of charge and discharge comes to be balanced by inserting the external resistance into the system and calculating the change of internal resistance.

  • A MMORPG(Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) is an online role-playing game in which a large number of players can interact with each other in the same world at the same time. Most of them require significant hardware requirements(e.g., servers and bandwidth), and dedicated support staff. Despite the efforts of developers, users often cite overpopulation, lag, and poor support as problems of games. In this paper, a dynamic load balancing method for MMORPGS is proposed. It tries to adapt to dynamic change of population by using dynamic map-partition method with VML(Virtual Map Layer) which consists of fields, sector groups, sectors, and cells. From the experimental results, our approach achieves about $23^{\sim}67%$ lower loads for each field server. By the modification to Virtual Area Layer, we can easily manage problems that come from changes of map data, resources' status, and users' behavior pattern.

  • Recently the deep and large excavations are performed near the existing buildings in urban areas for the practical use of underground space. The earth pressure due to the excavation are varied according to the conditions of ground, the depth of excavation, the construction methods, and the method of supporting the earth pressure etc.. In this study, not only the behavior of axial load and distribution of earth pressure on the flexible wall according to stage excavation depth but also magnitude and distribution of lateral deformation, and the equivalent earth pressure from strut axial loads were analyzed by the results measured from instruments such as, load cells, strain gauges, and in-situ inclinometer, on the field of subway construction. According to the results of this study in the case of stage excavation the earth pressure of soft clayey soil is compounded with Terzaghi-Peck and Tschebotarioff.

  • In this study, the performance of the support modular system, as substructure of the proposed sustainable-perpetual modular road system to reduce road construction time and maintenance costs was evaluated. A modular road system consisting of 4 support modular cross-beams with a lower curved surface was constructed on the test-bed. Six load cells and eight LVDTs were installed in the center part of two cross-beam support modular systems. Two loads, 50kN and 100kN, were applied to 15 points on the pavement slab to measure the load and displacement occurring in the modular road system. The measured displacements were less than 1 mm, so it is considered that there was no problem in the stability of the actual road. When comparing the two applied loads and the measured loads in the field test, it was considered that the load transmitted to the ground under the support modular system is very small. It is considered that the modular road system with the support modular system is applicable to the actual road site.

  • Internal storage state, weight data, and weight-centered calculation values for overhead bin can all be seen in this paper's real-time internal status identification system. The suggested system offers such valuable data via a range of sensors, including load cells and switch arrays. The proposed system could locate internal free space, locate the center of gravity, and give real-time visual information. It was developed utilizing an embedded system and the C programming language. These features led to the creation of smart overhead bins and real-time cargo loading monitoring technologies, both of which could one day aid in the creation of a cargo loading automation system.
