  • One of the most important aspects in structural health monitoring is the detection of fatigue damage. Structural components such as heavy-duty bolts work under high dynamic loads, and thus are prone to accumulate fatigue damage and cracks may originate. Those heavy-duty bolts are used, for example, in wind power generation and mining equipment. Therefore, the investigation of new and more effective monitoring technologies attracts a great interest. In this study the acoustic emission (AE) technology was employed to detect incipient damage during fatigue testing of a M36 bolt. Initial results showed that the AE signals have a high level of background noise due to how the load is applied by the fatigue testing machine. Thus, an advanced signal processing method in the time-frequency domain, the Hilbert-Huang Spectrum (HHS), was applied to reveal AE components buried in background noise in form of high-frequency peaks that can be associated with damage progression. Accordingly, the main contribution of the present study is providing insights regarding the detection of incipient damage during fatigue testing using AE signals and providing recommendations for further research.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide technical background, techniques and actual diesel engine signature analysis evaluation result. Engine signature analysis(ESA) is a process for monitoring the material condition of diesel engine using external sensors, eliminating the need to periodically disassemble the engine. ESA is also used to balanced the engine. Engine balancing is the process of tuning the engine so that all cylinders carry equal load. ESA is a useful tool to non-intrusively determine the operability and performance and assessment of the material condition of internal component of a diesel engine.

  • In this paper, the system which can read the frequency and the power values of the generators, calculate the S.R., display the on-line graph and the off-line graph and manage the database of the generators was developed. This system should be more faster, comfortable and powerful than the present analysis method of the S.R. in real fields.

  • The high-power 6.6 kV XLPE (or CV) cables at Korean electric power stations have been in operation for the last 40 years. Most of the XLPE cables starts deteriorating in 6-8 years from the operating instant of time, some cables may be breakdown at any moment even though they were installed in recent years, causing, huge socioeconomic losses. In order to prevent unexpected cable accident, the operating status of power cables should be monitored in regularly, timely bases. We have invented a device in order to systematically monitor and prevent an abrupt accidents of high-power cables in operation at power station. It has been installed at Korean Western Power Co. Ltd. at Taean, and operating normally for the last 4 years. In this paper, we introduce the functions and operating principles of the measuring device, and present the relationship between humidity and insulation status of XLPE cables for the load of electric turbine generator.

  • The management of power factor(PF) in the distribution line is treated according to the measurement a month about the feeder unit at the substation. In Korea, we have not researched into power factor in distribution system due to it's less weight. The reactive power in advanced countries is controlled automatically by the compensative condenser switch on/off under the monitoring. This paper first presents the optimal condenser position and proper capacity by lagrangue factor ${\lambda}_{Q}$ which is the line loss index about reactive power unit. Therefore, the largest ${\lambda}_{Q}$ node is the condenser injection point and we find out the best condenser capacity when the line loss is saturated by the moderation of condenser volume. By this method, we suggest 0.6% uprising PF by injection of 15 kVA condenser. Additionally, PF is analysed into 5 areas; large city, middle city, small city, farm village, fishing village by the use of Power Platform which is classified the same concept of the low load management in KEPCO. Two feeders of each area are selected by the worst results of PF in specified areas.

  • As electricity consumption is increasing rapidly these days, an urgent. need exists to minimize consumption through smart and intelligent ways in order to prevent a future energy crisis. For this purpose, development of an intelligent peak power management system should be required. As the number of appliances and consumer electrical devices increase, power consumption in unit business tends to grow. Generally, electricity consumption can be minimized using a peak power management system capable of. effectively controlling the load power by continuously monitoring the power. In this work, a peak power management system which consists of arduino microprocessor equipped with ethernet and Zigbee shield is presented. To verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, laboratory-scale experiments are carried out.

  • We propose a real time gas monitoring system for classifying various gases with different concentrations. Using thermal modulation of operating temperature of two sensors, we extract patterns of gases from the voltage across the load resistance. We adopt the relative resistance as a pre-processing method and an ART2 neural network as a pattern recognition method. The proposed method has been implemented in a real time embedded system with tin oxide gas sensors, TGS 2611, 2602 and an MSP430 ultra-low power microcontroller in the test chamber.

  • This paper is to see the availability of electrical signatures as a means for evaluating performance of MOVs which are extensively used in safety-related systems in nuclear plants. To estimate motor torque, two methods such as d-q frame conversion and air-gap method are suggested and estimated results are compared with measured values. The error between measured and estimated torques is within acceptable error bound with below $1\%$ under varied load. Frequency domain analysis of calculated torque has been done as well. It is shown that monitoring of peak frequency could give useful clues to detect anomalies of MOV.

  • This study set out to investigate an energy harvesting device to ensure stable energy supply to batteries and data collection devices and a monitoring system for acer pictum sap to check collected data. Acer pictum sap farmers have written down weather information and yield of acer pictum sap manually for data storage. Since the job is done manually, there are many missing values in their data. In addition, it is not easy to manage batteries due to the characteristics of the areas where acer pictum sap is collected. The present study thus decided to build an energy harvesting device based on new renewable energy to ensure stable energy supply by taking into consideration power load, daily power consumption, and number of days with no sunshine for various devices. For a monitoring system, the investigator proposed a JSP-based web page to monitor temperature, humidity, volume of collected water, and battery state in real time. The proposed energy harvesting device was applied to reduce missing values in data. It promoted stable energy supply to the batteries and data collection devices, reducing the percentage of missing values in data from 30.55% to 0%.
