  • This study, based on stages of behavioral change, was aimed at suggesting strategies for the adoption of moderate drinking habits for community-based health education designed to help rural people. An interview survey was conducted during the period from March 4 to April 5, 2002 by sampling 467 rural people living in 6 villages covered by a public healthcare clinic. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. The perceived non-moderate drinkers were less prepared for behavioral change. 2. The heavier drinking habits were ‘drinking alone’, ‘meals accompanied by drinking’ and ‘drinking twice or more at a time’. The agricultural off-season and the custom of brewing liquor at home were negative environmental factors for moderate drinking. 3. The predisposing factors affecting moderate drinking were recognition of health, expectation of the drinking effect, etiquette encouraging overdrinking and control of drinking. The reinforcing factors were stress from ordinary life and perception of being loved. The enabling factor was accessibility to the public healthcare clinic. 4. Rural residents are less motivated to participate in health education for moderate drinking. Based on the above findings, health education strategies for each stage can be suggested as follows: 1) Pre-contemplation stage: improvement of perception, motivation, sharing of experiences, and reawakening. 2) Contemplation/preparation stag e: measurement of value, departure from the inertia against a change, formation of a habit, and reinforcement of the behavior. 3) Action/maintenance stage: creation of a social atmosphere, encouragement of participation, change of life style, and improvement of environment.

  • To investigate dietary habits and health and nutritional status of the elderly with cerebrovascular disease(CVD), 31 hospitalized patients and 28 old people who had experienced stroke and were living at home were interviewed for the dietary habits and drinking and smoking habits. Their blood pressure and triceps skinfold thickness were measured and biochemical assessment of blood samples were conducted. The results were compared with those from 30 healthy elderly. Ca Index reflecting ca intake and intake of dietary fiber were significantly lower in the patient elderly groups than in the healthy elderly. Cholesterol intakes were not significantly different among the groups. Although salt intakes were almost similar among the groups, patient elderly tended to like salty taste as compared to the healthy elderly. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures of the patient elderly were significantly higher than those of the healthy elderly. Triceps skinfold thickness and serum total protein and albumin were significantly lower in patient groups than the healthy elderly. Serum cholesterol and hemoglobin concentrations were not different among groups. Among the above variables only Ca index was inversely correlated with blood pressure significantly.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate food habits, nutrients intakes and nutritional quality of the preschool children living in Seoul. The study was performed by analyzing a questionnaire answered by the mothers of 233 subjects aged 2 to 6 years old. A three-day dietary intakes survey, using a 24 hour recall method was used by both the mothers and teachers of the children in day care centers. Twenty eight, 65.9 and $21.8\%$ of preschool children were underweight, normal and overweight or obese, respectively. It was found that $19.8\%$ of preschool children replied that they skipped breakfast sometimes. The major reasons for skipping breakfast were 'snacks' ($38.3\%$) and 'no appetite' ($32.6\%$). The proportion of subjects having unbalanced meals was $61.6\%$. From the 24-recall survey, it was found that all nutrients intakes were higher than those of the Korean RDA except zinc. The proportions of carbohydrate, protein and fat from total calories were 56,1, 17.2 and $30.7\%$. The P/M/S ratio was 0.62 : 0.86 : 1. Nutrient adquacy (NAR), mean of nu-trient adequacy ratio (MAR) and index of nutritional quality (INQ) were considered adequate. In conclusion, the dietary intakes of children aged 2 to 6 were assumed adequate judging from nutrient intakes, although some attention should be paid to fat intake in this age group.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the anthropometry and nutrition knowledge, food behaviour and lifestyle of women college students with different obesity indexes. The subjects were 251 women college students who were randomly selected from Kunsan National University. The height, body weight, soft/lean mass, fat mass, percentage of body fat, and fat distribution were measured, and health-related lifestyle habits were evaluated based on questionnaires. The subjects were assigned to one of the following groups based on their Body Mass Index (BMI) : underweight, normal weight and overweight. The results were as follows. Their body weight, soft/lean mass, fat mass, percentage of body fat, and fat distribution were significantly higher in the overweight subjects when compared to the underweight or normal weight subjects. Standard of living, self-recognition of health status and duration of exercise were significantly correlated with their BMIs. Self-satisfaction with body weight decreased as the BMI increased. Most subjects had poor habits such as skipping meals and lack of exercises. The overweight and the underweight groups skipped meals more frequently than the normal weight group. There were no significant differences in the scores on the nutritional knowledge and the dietary behaviour of the subjects with different BMIs. Therefore, proper nutritional education on regular meals and intervention are required if women college students are to have normal weights and healthy lifestyles. • The Feeding habits of larval Liparis tanakae collected from the Nakdong River estuary were studied. L. tanakae [3.8-10.6 mm notochord length(NL)] was a carnivore thatconsumed mainly copepods. Its diet also included small numbers of free-living flatworms (Macrostomida), tintinnids, cladocerans, and polychaetes larvae. To evaluate ontogenetic changes in dietary composition, three size groups were designated: 3-5, 5-7, and >7 mm. Copepods were the most important prey items for all size groups. The smallest size group frequently preyed on polychaete and bivalve larvae, along with copepods. As notochord length increased, the numbers of cladocerans and Macrostomida increased relative to those of polychaete and bivalve larvae.
