Objective: Ruminants are completely dependent on their microbiota for rumen fermentation, feed digestion, and consequently, their metabolism for productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the rumen bacteria of lactating yaks with different milk protein yields, using high-throughput sequencing technology, in order to understand the influence of these bacteria on milk production. Methods: Yaks with similar high milk protein yield (high milk yield and high milk protein content, HH; n = 12) and low milk protein yield (low milk yield and low milk protein content, LL; n = 12) were randomly selected from 57 mid-lactation yaks. Ruminal contents were collected using an oral stomach tube from the 24 yaks selected. High-throughput sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene was used. Results: Ruminal ammonia N, total volatile fatty acids, acetate, propionate, and isobutyrate concentrations were found to be higher in HH than LL yaks. Community richness (Chao 1 index) and diversity indices (Shannon index) of rumen microbiota were higher in LL than HH yaks. Relative abundances of the Bacteroidetes and Tenericutes phyla in the rumen fluid were significantly increased in HH than LL yaks, but significantly decreased for Firmicutes. Relative abundances of the Succiniclasticum, Butyrivibrio 2, Prevotella 1, and Prevotellaceae UCG-001 genera in the rumen fluid of HH yaks was significantly increased, but significantly decreased for Christensenellaceae R-7 group and Coprococcus 1. Principal coordinates analysis on unweighted UniFrac distances revealed that the bacterial community structure of rumen differed between yaks with high and low milk protein yields. Furthermore, rumen microbiota were functionally enriched in relation to transporters, ABC transporters, ribosome, and urine metabolism, and also significantly altered in HH and LL yaks. Conclusion: We observed significant differences in the composition, diversity, fermentation product concentrations, and function of ruminal microorganisms between yaks with high and low milk protein yields, suggesting the potential influence of rumen microbiota on milk protein yield in yaks. A deeper understanding of this process may allow future modulation of the rumen microbiome for improved agricultural yield through bacterial community design.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reduction effect of microbially activated peat on odor generated by livestock farms. The odor gas was measured by stirring the livestock manure sample with the existing litter and the microbially activated peat (Healtha Peat) was developed by this research team. In outdoor farm experiment, the measurements were performed by comparing broilers farm using rice husks and microbially activated peat as litter. The weight, mortality, shipment date, and odor levels (NH3) were measured before and after experiment. The result showed that NH3 levels were reduced by 100% in the Healtha Peat mixed group, Healtha Peat and rice husks mixed group. In the peat mixed group, Healtha Peat and saw dust mixed group showed reduce value at 99.6% and 99.1%, respectively. However the rice husks mixed group and saw dust mixed group showed a relatively weak NH3 reduction effect with values of 57.5% and 84.8%, respectively. After 3 months, the Healtha Peat mixed group and Healtha Peat and rice husks mixed group showed the highest NH3 reduction effect persistence. In the outdoor farm experiment, NH3 was present in farms using rice husks, but not in farms using Healtha Peat. In farms using Healtha Peat, the mortality and NH3 were reduced by 75% and >90%, respectively. The average body weight increased 18% and resulted to 10% decrease in the shipping date. These results implied that microbially activated peat has a clear effect on farm NH3 reduction and affects the productivity of farm animals.

Heat stress causes a decrease in immunity and disease occurrence in livestock, increasing mortality and impairing productivity. In particular, chickens are very vulnerable to high temperatures compared to other livestock species because their entire body is covered with feathers and sweat glands are not developed. Currently, air conditioning systems are essential in broiler houses to prevent high-air temperature damage to broilers, but conventional cooling facilities are greatly affected by the external environment, so there are limits to their use. In this study, to propose a cooling method, thermal insulation paint and a heat pump were apply in the broiler houses to evaluate the temperature reduction effect. The heat pump experiment was to analyze the cooling effect according to the change in ventilation rate and propose an appropriate. As a result of the experiment, the heat-insulating paint reduced the temperature of the broiler houses by maximum 1-2℃, and in the broiler houses where the heat pump was operated, the temperature decrease was the largest when the ventilation rate was the lowest. When the air temperature in the house is similar to or lower than the outside air temperature, it is considered to be most effective to use a heat pump while maintaining only the minimum ventilation rate.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the type of swine manure on herbage productivity, the properties of soil and environmental pollution in mixed grassland. The field experiment was carried out on Livestock Breeding Station, Chonbuk in Korea from Nov. 2002 to Nov. 2005. Experimental plots were consisted of the types of swine manure, such as additional swine manure fermented with sawdust (SMFWS)+urea 50% and swine slurry (SS)+urea 50%. And then, chemical fertilizer (Urea) is used as control. DM yields of herbage were not different between chemical fertilizer and the type of swine manure. Feed values (CP, NDF, ADF, TDN) were not different between chemical fertilizer and swine manure treatments. After finishing with the experiment, Organic matter contents in soil increased. Organic matter, available phosphorous and Ca contents in swine manure treatment were higher than those of chemical fertilizer (p<0.05). $NO_3$-N and $NH_4$-N concentrations in leaching water in the mixed grassland was hardly influenced by application of swine manure and urea, whereas $NO_3$-N and $NO_3$-N levels in leaching water were less than 5 ppm.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of seeding rates on the forage quality and productivity of direct-seeded whole crop rice at the experimental field of the Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA from 2007 to 2008. Whole crop rice variety, "Nokyang", developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, was directly seeded with four different seeding rates (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha). There were no significant differences (p<0.05) found in emergence date, heading date, greenish and disease resistance based on the seeding rates. Plant height increased at higher seeding rates but the tiller number per plant decreased (p<0.05). The dry matter (DM) content showed no significant difference based on seeding rates (p<0.05) while the yield of fresh and dry matter increased with incremented seeding rates (p<0.05). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) content increased with higher seeding rates, but the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content did not show a similar tendency. The total digestible nutrient (TDN) content was lowest with 120 kg/ha seeding rate. The grain ratio decreased at higher seeding rates. In economic analysis, the plot seeded at a rate of 60 kg/ha showed the highest income increment. Although high seeding rates increased the DM yield, a seeding rate of 60 kg/ha is recommended as the proper seeding rate for direct-seeded whole crop rice.

To investigate the effects of inorganic phosphate ($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha), fermented cow manures($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha, 400kg/ha) and poultry manures($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha, 400kg/na) levels mixed with sawdust on the soil changes and productivity of alfalfa monoculture, a field experiment arranged by randonmized complete block design was conducted at National Livestock Research Institute in Suwon, September, 1993 to December 1995. The results are as follows. S1. Soil pH was changed from 5.40(before experiment) to 6.17(fermented cow manure, $P_2O_5$ 400kg/ha), 6.76 (fermented poultry manure, $P_2O_5$400kg/ha) and 6.3l(inorganic phosphate, $P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha) at 0~5cm depth of subsoil, respectively. Organic contents after experiment were lower as a range of 2.41%~3.15% than those before experiment. 2. Total nitrogen contents of each treatment showed as 0.13%~0.16% at 0~5cm depth of subsoil comparing with before experiment(0.15%). Available phosphate content of inorganic phosphate($P_2O_5$200kgha) was highest as 405ppm. lowest as 125ppm(fermented poultry manure, $P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha) than before trial(205ppm). 3. K and Ca contents of after experiment were appeared to 0.22%~0.78% and 6.45%~9.45% comparing with before experiment(0.10% and 3.56%), respectively. 4. During two years, average DM yield of fermented cow rnanure($P_2O_5$ 400kg/ha) was highest as 11, 731kg/ha and lowest as 9, 017kg/ha at fermented poultry manure plot($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha) with as sawdust, but no significant difference was found among treatment(P>0.05). 5. CP production, NEL and TDN yield of fermented cow manure($P_2O_5$ 400kg/ha) were highest as 2, 282kg/ha 69, 900kg/ha and 6, 392kg/ha, respectively, but no significant difference among treatment(P>0.05). 6. In inorganic contents of alfalfas, there was not show same tendency in accordance with treatments. As a results mentioned above, it was possible to use 200kg $P_2O_5/ha$ of fermented cow or poultry manure with sawdust instead of inorganic phosphae fertilizer.
This study was conducted to investigate the farm situation about bovine leukemia virus(BLV) infection that greatly influence productivity in dairy cattle and compare the accuracy of diagnosis for BLV infection between PCR and ELISA techniques. Blood samples of 193 heads from 5 herds in Chungnam and Chungbuk area were used to analyze BLV gene and serum, and the results were obtained as follows. The amplified BLV gene in dairy cattle by PCR technique resulted in 226 bp, 596 bp and 434 bp, respectively, for gag, pol and env, which were well amplified. The infection rates of BLV virus diagnosed by PCR and ELISA techniques ranged from 80.55 to 100% and from 22.22 to 86.95%, respectively, and the infection rates among 5 herds were significantly different in both methods (P<0.05). Further, the average infection rates of 5 herds were 87.05 and 63.21%, respectively, for PCR and ELISA techniques. Kappa statistics for examining consistency of diagnosis by PCR and ELISA techniques showed 0.246, which represents low consistency. Consequently, PCR based BLV technique was considered as a corrective measure for diagnosis of BLV infection in Holstein dairy cattle.

Salmonella infections in livestock industry cause various problems such as worsening animal welfare and productivity, damaging consumer confidence in the food safety of animal products. Chicken meat and eggs are known as major source of pathogen causing human foodborne infections. Therefore food safety concerns have prompted the poultry producers and governments to introduce the strategy and regulation to control these pathogens. Salmonella can persist for long periods of time in a wide range of spaces including feed bin, feed processing facilities, poultry farm, slaughterhouse, processing plants, etc. For the effective and constant Salmonella control, combination of pre-harvest, harvest and post-harvest measures should be considered comprehensively. The control measures would be most effective at farm level where the contamination initiates. Transmission of pathogen from feed origin to the live poultry and finally to the products was proven already. To control bacteria in the feed ingredients and formula feed, thermal processing, irradiation or chemical treatment may be applied. Chemical treatments to inhibit Salmonella in the feed involve the use of products containing organic acids, formaldehyde, or a combination of such compounds. However, recontamination which might occur during storage and transport process and/or by other various factors should always be under control and eliminated. Feed additives used to control Salmonella in birds' gastrointestinal track can be of various types, including prebiotics, probiotics, organic acids and bacteriophages. Although their mode of action varies, they ultimately inhibit the colonization of Salmonella in the gut and improve the performance of birds. This review describes the strategies that could be adapted to the management of feedstuffs and the use of feed additives in pre-harvest stage to control Salmonella contamination in poultry farming.

There has been widespread warming and a general increase in summer temperatures over the Korean peninsula ($0.5^{\circ}C$/10 years from 2001 to 2010). South Korea is transforming into a subtropical region, and the productivity of livestock is affected by the climatic changes. In this study, we investigated whether the summer heat waves affect the developmental competency of Korean native cattle (Hanwoo), a taurine type of cattle with a small portion of indicine varieties. We collected oocytes during the summer (heat stress, HS) and autumn (non-HS condition) and examined the developmental competencies including in vitro maturation and preimplantation embryo development. No significant differences were observed between the HS and non-HS oocytes in nuclear maturation (extrusion of the polar body); however, the cleavage and blastocyst rates were significantly lower in the HS group than those in the non-HS group. The lower developmental competence of the HS oocytes compared to the non-HS is, in part, due to insufficient cytoplasmic maturation because of a higher production of Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels as well as peri/cortical distributed mitochondria in the HS oocytes after in vitro maturation. Next, we examined the ROS and mitochondria distribution and found a significant increase in the levels of ROS in the HS oocytes and a polarized distribution (pericortical cytoplasm) of mitochondria in the HS oocytes. In summary, impaired cytoplasmic maturation of oocytes from exposure to HS affects the preimplantation embryo development by dysfunction of mitochondria. To improve reproductive performance, embryo transfer using cryopreserved embryos/oocytes is recommended in the hot summer season of South Korea.

A breeding program in progress at Suweon Livestock Experiment Station, RDA, involves the hybridization of italian ryegrass (Lm) and several leading forage grasses in an effort to combine the nutritive, productivity and palatability qualities of Lm with the adaptive and cold resistance qual; .les of several leading grasses. In order to study the fate of the hybridization between remotely related species, immatured hybrid embryos were cultured on media. The emasculated plants of Lm were Sikem and Tetrone. Reweille, 2n=14, of perennial ryegrass (Lp.), Forager, 2n=42, of tall fescue(Fa), First, 2n=14,of meadow fescue(Fp), Potomac, 2n=28, of orchardgrass(Dg), and Richmond, 2n=42, of timothy(Ph.p) were used as pollinators. Embryos were isolated on 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 days after pollination and cultured them on modified Murashige and Skoog media. Calluses and plantlets have been obtained after 8 days old embryos crossing between $Lm{\times}Fa$, after 12 days embryos crossing between $Lm{\times}Lp$, Dg, and Ph.p, and after 16 days embryos crossing between $Lm{\times}Fp$. Both callus and shoot formation occurred on 6 % or less of the plated embryos of $Lm{\times}Fp$, Dg, and Ph.p. Embryoderived callus forming shoots have been obtained from 4 days old embryo crossing between $Lm{\times}Dg$ which has not successfully been done anywhere as far as we know. It means that hybrid plants of species without crossability can be obtained through the use of immatured embryo culture. Some of plated embryos developed directly shoots from embryos and the others shoot-forming callus. Cross between related species showed a high frequency of directly shoot formation from plated embryos and cross between remotely related species a high frequency of callus formation.
