  • In a lithium-ion battery which is being used in many portable electronic goods, electrolyte is disaggregated and then the gas is happened when electric charging volt is over the 4.5V. So, the pressure on the safety valve is increased and electrolyte is leaked out in the cell. It leads to the risk of explosion. On the other hand, in the case which the battery is discharged excessively, the negative pole is damaged and the performance of the battery is deteriorated. The protection module of a lithium-ion battery is used for preventing such risk and the inspection system is needed to check the performance of such protection module. In this research, a PC-based auto inspection system is developed for the inspection of a battery protection module using Dallas chipset. In the inspection system, AVRl28 chip is used as a controller and the communication protocol is developed for the data communication between the protection module and the AVR128 chip. And GPIB interface is used for the control of measuring devices. Also, MMI environment is developed using LabView for convenient monitoring by the tester.

Electrochemical and Safety Performances of Polyimide Nano fiber-based Nonwoven Separators for Li-ion Batteries

  • In this study, cell performance and thermal stability of lithium-ion cells with a polyimide (PI) separator are investigated. In comparison to conventional polyethylene (PE) separator, the PI separator exhibits distinct advantage in microporous structure, leading to superior reliability of the cell. The cells with PI separator exhibit good cell performances as same as the cells with PE separator, but their reliability was superior to the cell with PE separator. Especially in the hot-box test at 150 and 180℃, PI separator showed a contraction percentage close to 0% at 150℃, while the PE separator showed a contraction percentage greater than 10% in both width and length. Therefore, the PI separator can be the promising candidate for separators of the next generation of lithium-ion battery.

  • In increasing the safety and usage of lithium-ion battery packs, reducing the parameter deviation between cells, such as voltage and temperature within the battery pack, is important. In this study, we propose a screening method to reduce parameter deviation between cells in battery packs. Screening algorithms are constructed based on Fuzzy logic and quantitatively express the similarities between battery cells. Screening is applied by utilizing series resistance components after experiments of electrical characteristics that consider the operation status of battery packs. After screening, the standard deviation of series resistance components according to the similarity ranking is compared and analyzed, and their conformity are verified with the algorithm parameters.

  • The large scaled lead-acid battery is widely used for efficient operation of the photovoltaic system in many islands. However, lithium-ion battery is now being introduced to mitigate the fluctuation of wind power and to replace lead-acid battery. Therefore, hybrid ESS(Energy Storage system) that combines lithium-ion battery with lead-acid battery is being required because lithium-ion battery is costly in present stage. Under this circumstance, this paper presents the optimal algorithm to create composition rate of hybrid ESS by considering fixed and variable costs in order to maximize advantage of each battery. With minimization of total cost including fixed and variable costs, the optimal composition rate can be calculated based on the various scenarios such as load variation, life cycle and cost trend. From simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithms are an effective tool to produce a optimal composition rate.

  • In this study, we investigate the electrochemical performance of lithium terephthalate (LTA) battery using graphite coated metal current collector to overcome the disadvantages of organic batteries which is high interfacial resistance between current collector and electrode. The LTA anode material is synthesized by acid-based ion exchange reaction without impurities. The contact properties between stick-type LTA-based electrode and graphite coated current collector are estimated by the cross-section SEM and EIS. The graphite coated current collector significantly reduced the interfacial resistance of the LTA battery. The second discharge capacities of bare current collector LTA and graphite coated current collector LTA batteries are 107.6 mAh/g and 148.8 mAh/g at 0.1C, respectively. The graphite coated current collector LTA batteries show higher cycle life, higher discharge capacity, and higher rate-capability than bare LTA batteries.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop tin oxide-flash composite for lithium Ion polymer battery. Tin oxide is one of the promising material as a electrode active material for lithium Ion polymer battery (LIPB). Tin-based oxides have theoretical volumetric and gravimetric capacities that are four and two times that of carbon, respectively. We investigated cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycling of SnO-flyash/SPE/Li cells. The first discharge capacity of SnO-flyash composite anode was 720 mAh/g. The discharge capacity of SnO-flyash composite anode 412 and 314 mAh/g at cycle 2 and 10 at room temperature, respectively. The SnO-flyash composite anode with PVDF-PMMA-PC-EC-$LiClO_4$ electrolyte showed good capacity with cycling.

Degradation Prediction and Analysis of Lithium-ion Battery using the S-ARIMA Model with Seasonality based on Time Series Models (시계열 모델 기반의 계절성에 특화된 S-ARIMA 모델을 사용한 리튬이온 배터리의 노화 예측 및 분석)

  • This paper uses seasonal auto-regressive integrated moving average (S-ARIMA), which is efficient in seasonality between time-series models, to predict the degradation tendency for lithium-ion batteries and study a method for improving the predictive performance. The proposed method analyzes the degradation tendency and extracted factors through an electrical characteristic experiment of lithium-ion batteries, and verifies whether time-series data are suitable for the S-ARIMA model through several statistical analysis techniques. Finally, prediction of battery aging is performed through S-ARIMA, and performance of the model is verified through error comparison of predictions through mean absolute error.

  • The performance of Li-ion system based on $LiCoO_2$ and Graphite is well optimized for the 3C applications. The charge-discharge mode, the manufacturing process, the cell performance and the thermal reactions affecting safety has been explained in the engineering point of view. The energy density of the current LIB system is in the range of 300~400 Wh/l. In order to achieve the energy density higher than 500 Wh/l, the active materials should be modified or changed. Adopting new high capacity anode materials would be effective to improve energy density.

  • The demand for electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries is continuously increasing. Recovery of valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries will be necessary in the future. This research investigated the effect of reaction temperature on the lithium recovery ratio from hydrogen reduction followed by water leaching from lithium-ion battery NCM-based cathode materials. As the reaction temperature increased, the weight loss ratio observed after initiation increased rapidly owing to hydrogen reduction of NiO and CoO; at the same time, the H2O amount generated increased. Above 602 ℃, the anode materials Ni and Co were reduced and existed in the metallic phases. As the hydrogen reduction temperature was increased, the Li recovery ratio also increased; at 704 ℃ and above, the Li recovery ratio reached a maximum of approximately 92%. Therefore, it is expected that Li can be selectively recovered by hydrogen reduction as a waste lithium-ion battery pretreatment, and the residue can be reprocessed to efficiently separate and recover valuable metals.
