  • In the present study, a polyphenolic mixture was isolated from Seomae mugwort (SM; a native Korean variety of Artemisia argyi H.) via extraction with aqueous 70% methanol followed by the elution of ethyl acetate over a silica gel column. Each polyphenolic compound was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, and compared with the literature. In addition to the 14 characterized components, one hydroxycinnamate, six flavonoids, and one lignan were reported for the first time, to the best our knowledge, in Artemisia argyi H. The anti-inflammatory properties of SM polyphenols were studied in lipopolysaccharide-treated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The SM polyphenols attenuated the activation of macrophages via the inhibition of nitric oxide production, nuclear factor-κB activation, the mRNA expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin-1β, and the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase. Our results suggested that SM polyphenols may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of inflammatory-related diseases.

  • The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is crucial for protein synthesis, transport, and folding, as well as calcium storage, lipid and steroid synthesis, and carbohydrate metabolism. Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) occurs when misfolded or unfolded proteins accumulate in the ER lumen due to increased protein secretion or impaired folding. While the role of ERS in disease pathogenesis has been widely studied, most research has focused on extraoral diseases, leaving the role of ERS in intraoral diseases unclear. This review examines the role of ERS in oral diseases and oral fibrosis pathogenesis. A systematic search of literature through July 2023 was conducted in the MEDLINE database (via PubMed) using specific terms related to ERS, oral diseases, and fibrosis. The findings were summarized in both table and narrative form. Emerging evidence indicates that ERS significantly contributes to the pathogenesis of oral diseases and fibrosis. ERS-induced dysregulation of protein folding and the unfolded protein response can lead to cellular dysfunction and inflammation in oral tissues. Understanding the relationship between ERS and oral disease pathogenesis could offer new therapeutic targets for managing oral health and fibrosis-related complications.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of telerehabilitation on stroke patients through remotely operated intervention and monitoring. Methods: Literature from 2000 to April 2018 was collected through PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and RISS. We used telerehabilitation, telemedicine, and stroke as the search terms in regard to foreign literature, and the terms telerehabilitation, stroke, and CVA in regard to Korean literature. A total of 406 foreign and 15 Korean published studies were found. As a result, a total of seven documents was selected for the analysis. Results: As a result of the analysis, all the interventions applied through telerehabilitation were provided remotely, and significant effects were reported between pre-post assessments. In addition, the significant effects of telerehabilitation were reported through analyzing pre-post(n=7) and between groups(n=4) assessments. The monitoring used could be categorized according to purpose, that is, for checking (n=3) and as an intervention (n=4). Conclusions: This study confirmed, within limits, that the application of telerehabilitation could be a potential alternative for stroke patients with limited rehabilitation services. In order to apply telerehabilitation in Korea, it is necessary to study the cost effectiveness, according to the current domestic situation, and confirm the most effective monitoring method based on the intervention.

  • Desmoplastic fibroma(DF) is a rare neoplasm of the bone, and is histologically benign but locally aggressive disease. A total of nine cases of DF involving skull have been reported in the literature, and among these eight are females. In this report, the clinical findings and histopathology of a case with DF of the skull in a male patient is presented with a review of the literature with an emphasis on treatment modalities. A 21-year-old man presented with headache. CT scan revealed a solitary and lytic skull lesion without brain invasion. DF was confirmed by histological evaluation. On immunohistochemical staining of the tumor was negative for estrogen or progesterone receptors. After total resection of tumor with wide surgical margin, there was no recurrence during the 35 months of follow-up period. Although longer follow up period maybe needed, treatment of this type of tumor with complete resection of tumor tissue along with a wide margin may provide long disease-free state compare to the high recurrence rates in DF of other sites.

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to find the literature basis on SuGi-therapy(手氣療法) in Donguibogam. Methods : Anma(按摩), Doin(導引), Angyo(按蹻), Anap(按壓) and Chuna(推拿), the keyword of this study, were researched, analyzed and classified in Donguibogam. Results : 1) In Donguibogam, the keyword Anma(按摩) and Doin(導引) showed up 10 and 33 times, respectively and 7 and 20 times, respectively in the body except the table of contents. In considering the meaningful cases, in short, Anma(按摩) and Doin(導引) appeared 7 and 16 times, respectively. Furthermore we could know Anma(按摩) showed up 4 times with the highest frequency in Oehyeongpyeon(外形篇), and Doin(導引) showed up 11 times with the highest frequency in Naegyeongpyeon(內景篇). 2) Anma(按摩) was mostly used as a separate word and only 2 times was "Anmadoin(按摩導引)" used. In 16 meaningful cases, Doin(導引) was used as "Doinbeop(導引法)" 14 times and 2 times was "Anmadoin(按摩導引)" used in a linked form. Among 14 times when "Doinbeop(導引法)" was referred, it was stated as "Do Doinbeop(導引法)" without any detailed explanations 2 times and it was explained about how to pose when people do Doinbeop(導引法) for prevention and treatment 12 times. 3) Reviewed in Donguibogam, Anma(按摩) and Doin(導引) were the ChoGi-therapy(調氣療法) in all. Because they include both massaging by oneself and getting a massage from someone else, they all could be 'SuGi-therapy(手氣療法)' in a broad sense. 4) In Sikjeokbyeong(息積病), the 12th chapter of Jeokchwimun(積聚文) in Japbyeongpyeon(雜病篇), Doinbeop(導引法) was referred as the treatment of Jeok(積) which belongs to obstinate and incurable diseases. This means SuGi-therapy(手氣療法) could be the basis of using widely on several incurable diseases in modern society. 5) There is few paper about SuGi-therapy(手氣療法). SuGi-therapy (手氣療法) doesn't seem to form a large part in modern Korean medicine but it is a remedy that has been together with the history of Korean medicine so long and has great therapeutic effects and usefulness. From now on, the literature and clinical study on SuGi-therapy(手氣療法) should be conducted continuously and developed for the better.

  • This paper tried to interpret new phenomenon in the narrative focusing on the tale. People telling about this story understood it in the way of recognizing and resigning the power of powerful destiny. This article poses a problem to that point. The male character begins the question "why?" And experiences a process of thoughtful thought. And he finds out his past life and pioneers his destiny. The find past life in this tale, it means 'an opportunity to choose oneself and life for themselves'. This can be interpreted as Samsara of Buddhism that does not insist on a fixed self. Experience of this process of reasoning according to narrative context of folktale will become literary therapy activity confirming the effectiveness of marital conflict narrative including the former motifs.

  • Objective : Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly suffer from feeding disorders. Major feeding problems include mealtime behavior problems, picky eating, and a lack of food variety can lead to nutritional problems, developmental and social limitations, and stress for the caregivers. A review of the latest literature was conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of assessment tools for feeding disorders in children with ASD. Method : This study analyzed assessments to identify feeding problems in ASD based on previous studies searched through keywords such as ASD, ASD feeding problem, and ASD feeding evaluation. Results : The ASD feeding disorder assessment was divided into direct and indirect assessments. Indirect assessment, in which caregivers measure a child's situation using questionnaires, is mainly used. The assessment of feeding disorders in children with ASD was divided into 1) mealtime behavior, 2) sensory processing, 3) food consumption, and 4) others. Conclusion : As the main feeding disorder characteristics of children with ASD are very diverse, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary but is still limited. Swallowing rehabilitation experts, such as occupational therapists, should apply comprehensive assessment tools based on a basic understanding of the feeding problems, behaviors, and sensations in ASD.

  • Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) is associated with a variety of therapeutic effects, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, vasorelaxative, antiallergic, antidiabetic, and anticancer effects. Accordingly, the use of ginseng has reached an all-time high among members of the general public. However, the safety and efficacy of ginseng in transplant recipients receiving immunosuppressant drugs have still not been elucidated. Transplantation is the most challenging and complex of surgical procedures and may require causation for the use of ginseng. In this regard, we have previously examined the safety, immunological benefits, and protective mechanisms of ginseng with respect to calcineurin inhibitor-based immunosuppression, which is the most widely used regimen in organ transplantation. Using an experimental model of calcineurin inhibitor-induced organ injury, we found that ginseng does not affect drug levels in the peripheral blood and tissue, favorably regulates immune response, and protects against calcineurin inhibitor-induced nephrotoxicity and pancreatic islet injury. On the basis of our experimental studies and a review of the related literature, we propose that ginseng may provide benefits in organ transplant recipients administered calcineurin inhibitors. Through the present review, we aimed to briefly discuss our current understanding of the therapeutic benefits of ginseng related to transplant patient survival.
