Thermal transport from vertical heated surface to falling liquid film in a channel has been investigated experimentally. Air-flow is introduced into channel to make a counter flow against falling liquid film. This problem is of particular interest in the design of direct contact heat exchange system, such as cooling tower, evaporative cooling system, absorption cooling system, and distillation system. The effects of channel width and air flow rate on the heat transfer to falling liquid film are studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that heat transfer rate is gradually decreased with an increase in the channel width without air flow as well as with air flow in a channel. It is also found that heat transfer rate of air-flow is increased while heat transfer rate of falling liquid film is decreased with an increase in the air flow rate at a given channel width. However, total heat transfer rate from the heated surface is increased as the air flow rate is increased.
To increase the ink transfer rate in the micro-gravure-offset printing, the liquid transfer process between two separating plates is investigated. During the liquid transfer process, in which one plate is fixed and the other one moves vertically, a sessile droplet is separated into two droplets. The volume ratio of the two droplets depends on the contact angles of the two plates. In a numerical study of the ink transfer processes, liquid transfer between two parallel separating plates and between a trapezoidal cavity and an upward moving plate are simulated, as models of the printing of ink from the offset pad onto the substrate and the picking up of ink from the gravure plate by the offset pad, respectively. Also, in experimental study, to obtain various surface contact angles, chemical treatment, plasma treatment, and electrowetting- on-dielectric (EWOD) surface are considered. The transfer rate between two plates is calculated by analyzing the droplet images. From the results, the optimal surface contact angles of the units of the micro-gravure-offset printing can be characterized.
Energy transfer dynamics of excited vibrational energy of OH stretching bonds in liquid water is theoretically studied. With time-dependent vibrational Hamiltonian obtained from a mixed quantum/classical calculation, we construct a master equation describing the energy transfer dynamics. Survival probability predicted by the master equation is compared with numerically exact one and we found that incoherent picture of energy transfer is reasonably valid for long-time population dynamics. Within the incoherent picture, we assess the validity of independent pair approximation (IPA) often introduced in the theoretical models utilized in the analysis of experimental data. Our results support that the IPA is almost perfectly valid as applied for the vibrational energy transfer in liquid water. However, proper incorporation of radial and orientational correlations between two OH bonds is found to be critical for a theory to be quantitatively valid. Consequently, it is suggested that the Forster model should be generalized by including the effects of the pair correlations in order to be applied for vibrational energy transfer in liquid water.

Film boiling heat transfer of the subcooled turbulent liquid film flow on a horizontal plate was investigated by theoretical and experimental studies. In the theoretical analysis, by solving the integral energy and momentum equations analytically, some generalized expressions for Nusselt number was deduced. Next, by comparing the deduced equations with the experimental data on the turbulent film boiling heat transfer of the subcooled thin liquid film flow, the semi-empirical relation between the Nusselt number based on the modified heat transfer coefficient and the Reynolds number was obtained. The correlating equation was very similar to that of the turbulent heat transfer in a single phase flow, and it was found that the heat transfer was dissipated to increase the liquid temperature.

This study is to provide the experimental information and basic data on heat transfer characteristics of horizontal liquid film driven by hot wind. Heat transfer characteristics of the liquid film in the rectangular duct was observed and the change of film temperature was measured. The experiments were carried out for a variety of parameter, such as feed water rate and velocity and temperature of feed air. From the observation and the measurement the general understanding of heat transfer characteristics for liquid film driven by hot wind was provided.

This is the second report of a three part study on the absorption and heat transfer characteristics of absorber, the correlation of refrigerating capacity and heating capacity. The 2nd report deals with the heat transfer characteristics of a vertical falling film type absorber of inner copper tube. The solute is LiBr-Water solution(60wt%) and the solvent is water vapor. The film Reynoles numbers are varied in the range of 35~130. The states of LiBr solution at the top of absorber are supercooled liquid and superheated liquid. The results are summarized as follows ; Heat transfer results reveal that for the absorption of falling film, the state of LiBr solution appears to be influential in determining the heat transfer. Thus, for the state of supercooled liquid, heat transfer coefficient decreases with increasing the film Reynolds number, but in the condition of superheated liquid, it increases conversely. The mass transfer coefficients that were presented in the 1st.report and heat transfer coefficients of this paper are presented as the dimensionless correlation. The optimum water flowrate which brings about maximum value of heat flux in the film exists, and that increases with increasing the cooling water temperature.

Heat transfer and solidification of liquid silicon in von-$K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ swirling flow is investigated. The moving boundary is fixed for all times by a coordinate transformation, and finite difference method Is used to obtain the instantaneous location of the solid-liquid Interface and the heat transfer from the surfaces of solid and liquid. For small Stefan number or low wall temperature, the transient heat transfer from the surface of solid(QS(t)) is much larger than that from the liquid side of solid-liquid interface(QL(t)) and QL(t) reaches its quasi-steady-state value much faster than QS(t).

Local heat transfer characteristics for a round air jet impinging normally on a heated flat plate were experimentally investigated. The problem parameters investigated were jet Reynolds number, Re=4000,10000, and 20000, and nozzle-to-plate spacing(L/D) of 2,6, and 10. The temperature variations on the flat uniform heat flux surface were mapped using a thermo-sensitive liquid crytal sheet. The isochromatic images corresponding to the characteristic temperature of liquid crystal were analyzed with the help of a digital image processing system. The local Nusselt number, Nu decreased rapidly in the impingement region and exhibited a similar profiles in the wall jet region independent of the nozzle-to-plate spacing L/D. In the case of large Reynolds number, heat transfer rate (Nu) was proportional to 0.5 power of the Reynolds number. For L/D=2, a secondary peak in the heat transfer rate was seen in the region of X/D=1.5~3 due to the transition from laminar to turbulent boundary layer.

Separate type thermosyphon has larger critical heat flux than non-loop type thermosyphon, because the flooding phenomenon of vapor and liquid occurring in non-loop one does not occur. The experimental study has been carried out separate type thermosyphon with single tube. An investigation of heat transfer characteristics in separate type thermosyphon is performed experimentally. Heat transfer coefficients in an evaporator and condenser were measured experimentally. The effects of liquid filling ratio, height difference, cooling temperature and heat flux on the heat transfer coefficients were examined. As a result, the reasonable range of the liquid filling ratio and the dependence of heat transfer on vapor temperature and heat flux are obtained.
Droplet evaporation can be used to transfer large amounts of energy since heat is transferred across a thin liquid film. Spreading the drop over a larger area can enhance this heat transfer. One method of accomplishing this is to dissolve gas into the liquid. When the drop strikes the surface, a gas bubble nucleates and can grow and merge within the liquid, resulting in an increase in the droplet diameter. In this study, time and space resolved heat transfer characteristics for a single droplet striking a heated surface were experimentally investigated. The local wall heat flux and temperature measurements were provided by a novel experimental technique in which 96 individually controlled heaters were used to map the heat transfer coefficient contour on the surface. A high-speed digital video camera was used to simultaneously record images of the drop from below. The measurements to date indicate that significantly smaller droplet evaporation times can be achieved. The splat diameter was observed to increase with time just after the initial transient dies out due to the growth of the bubble, in contrast to a monotonically decreasing splat diameter for the case of no bubbles. Bursting of the bubble corresponded to a sudden decrease in droplet heat transfer.
