Superhydrophobic $TiO_2$ thin films were successfully fabricated on a glass substrate by wet process. Layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition and liquid phase deposition (LPD) methods were used to fabricate the thin films of micro-nano complex structure with a high roughness. To fabricate superhydrophobic $TiO_2$ thin films, the (PAH/PAA) thin films were assembled on a glass substrate by LBL method and then $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of (PAH/PAA) thin film by LPD method, Subsequently, hydrophobic treatment using fluoroalkyltrimethoxysilane (FAS) was carried out on the surface of prepared $TiO_2$ thin films. The $TiO_2$ thin film fabricated with 45 minutes immersion time on $(PAH/PAA)_{10}$ showed the RMS roughness of 65.6nm, water contact angel of $155^{\circ}$ and high transmittance of above 80% (>650nm in wavelength) after the hydrophobic treatment. The Surface morphologies, optical properties and contact angel of prepared thin films with different experimental conditions were measured by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and contact angle meter.
We have developed a rapid, simple and precise high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method using an UV detection system for the determination of new anti-HIV candidates, nineteen KR-V compounds, in rat plasma. We used a analytical columnn of $C_{18}$ ($5{\mu}m$, $250{\times}2.0mm$ I.D.) and a mobile phase of water and ACN mixture (40/60, v/v). Under these conditions, all the KR-V compounds were readily separated from plasma with retention times of 4-12 min. The limits of quantitation for the 19 KR-V compounds were 15-30 ng/ml. The recoveries from the plasma were higher than 85% (C.V.<10%) with exception of KR-V 2, 7 and 15. The compounds KR-V 2, 7 and 15, containing ester moieties, were found to be unstable in plasma. This result suggests that esters, like KR -V 2, 7 and 15, should be excluded from future structure design studies of anti-HIV KR-V agents. In conclusion, the current HPLC method is a valuable analytical tool for investigating the pharmacokinetics of the KR-V series in rats.

The purpose of this study is to investigated the elution behavior of platinoid metal acetylacetonates, which is the key to elucidate their retention mechanism and optimize their RPLC separation conditions. The retention data of four platinoid metal acetylacetonates have been measured on four different columns in methanol-water and acetonitrile-water systems. The retention of uncharged platinoid metal acetylacetonates is interpreted by solvophobic effect. The retention of platinoid metal acetylacetonates is also greatly influenced by the geometric structure of the complexes. The square planar chelates, $Pd(acac)_2$, $Pt(acac)_2$, are retained longer than the octahedral chelates, $Rh(acac)_3$, $Ir(acac)_3$. It is likely due to that square planar chelates show greater interaction with nonpolar stationary phase than octahedral chelates. The results of van't Hoff plots have shown that platinoid metal acetylacetonates is operated on the same retention mechanism in the temperature range of $25{\sim}45^{\circ}C$. The study of the retention mechanism by the enthalpy-entropy compensation phenomenon has indicated that the retention mechanism of octahedral chelates and square planar chelates do not vary with the composition change of methanol-water mobile phase, respectively. In acetonitrile-water mobile phase, however, the retention mechanism is observed to be more complicated. Optimum condition for the separation of four platinoid metal acetylacetonates is found to be 40% methanol, polymeric C18 column, and $45^{\circ}C$.
Cortex Phellodendri (CP) is derived from the dried bark of Phellodendron amurense. It has been widely used as a drug in traditional Korea medicine for treating diarrhea, jaundice, swelling pains in the knees and feet, urinary tract infections, and infections of the body surface. Many analytical methods have been used to study oriental herbal medicines, such as thin-layer chromatography, column liquid chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In this study, preparative centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) was successfully carried out in order to separate pure compounds from a CP methanol extract. The optimum two-phase CPC solvent system was composed of n-butanol: acetic acid: water (4:1:5 v/v/v). The flow rate of the mobile phase was 3 mL/min in ascending mode with rotation at 1,000 rpm. The CPC-separated fraction and purification procedures were carried out by preparatory HPLC. The $^1H$ NMR spectrum revealed that the resonances at ${\delta}$ 4.10 and 4.20 ppm corresponded to three protons ($-OCH_3$), whereas those at ${\delta}$ 6.10 ppm corresponded to two protons ($-OCH_2O-$). Further, two aromatic protons (H-11 and H-12) conveys a doublet-doublet pattern. The H-11 doublet and H-12 doublet appear at ${\delta}$ 7.98 and 8.11, respectively. The $^{13}C$ NMR. spectrum showed a tetrasubstituted with a methylenedioxy group at C2 and C3, and two methoxy groups at C9 and C10. The chemical structure of the berberine was identified by $^1H$, $^{13}C$-nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ionization-mass spectroscopy spectral data analysis.

We report new polymer stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (PSFLC) cells with mechanical stability which is achievable by introducing photospacers in the cells. It was found that the mechanical st ability of the PSFLC cell was effected by introduction of photo spacers. We analyzed the dependence of mechanical stability and memory property on the density of photospacers in the PSFLC cell. The stability and memory properties of PSFLC Cells depending on photospacer density are discussed. 1. Introduction Recently, flexible displays have attracted much attention because they have remarkable advantages: thinner, lighter, non-breakable and conformable features. Flexible displays have various potential applications such as e-book and e-paper displays utilizing the distinct features. E-book and E-paper displays demand very low power consumption, so that bistable memory liquid crystal modes are required in case of flexible plastic LCDs for those application. Three kinds of memory LC modes have been developed; bistable nematic, bistable cholesteric and bistable FLC. Among them SSFLC as one of bistable FLC has big advantages such as low driving voltage, wide view angle and fast response time, SSFLC cells are, however, very weak against mechanical shock. Polymer stabilized FLC (PSFLC) has been developed to overcome the poor mechanical stability of SSFLC. PSFLC was known to have network structure that FLCs are oriented with smectic layer ordering in polymer network. The polymer network stabilizes the FLC orientation, which leads to improvement of mechanical stability of PSFLCD. A lot of studies have been done for the application of PSFLC to flexible $LCDs.^{[1{\sim}12]}$ However, it should be noted that PSFLC does not have sufficient mechanical stability for the particular applications such as smart card LCD, where LCD is highly bendable.Bead spacer was mainly used to maintain cell gap of conventional PSFLCDs. But the spacer density of it is not locally uniform in the cell, so that it is generally difficult that the PSFLCDs with bead spacers show sufficient mechanical stability. In order to more improve the mechanical stability of PSFLCDs, we introduced photospacers into PSFLCDs. In this paper, we describe the improvement of mechanical stability by introducing photospacers into PSFLCDs.
Amethysts in Eonyang Granite of Woolju-Kun, Kyungnam Province are frequently parallelly grown on top of preexisting smoky quartz crystallized on milky and colorless quartz crystals, which, as a whole, resemble "mushroom" in outer appearance. Fluid inclusions in the amethysts may be grouped into (1) gaseous inclusions (G>L), (2) liquid inclusions (L>G), (3) $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions (L+G+$L_{CO_2}$), (4) halite-bearing inclusions (L+G+halite), (5) multiphase inclusions (L+G+halite+sylvite${\pm}$opaque mineral). In addition, euhedral K-feldspars and acicular hematite crystals are included in colorless-milky quartz and deep purple-red quartz, respectively. Filling temperatures of each type of fluid inclusions were measured as follows: $320{\sim}560^{\circ}C$ for gaseous inclusions; $100{\sim}290^{\circ}C$ for liquid inclusions; $200{\sim}310^{\circ}C$ for $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions; $300{\sim}430^{\circ}C$ for halite-bearing inclusions; and $370{\sim}430^{\circ}C$ for polyphase inclusions. The finished-gem amethysts from Eonyang may be distinguished from Brazilian amethysts by the difference in filling degree of gaseous inclusions by the presence of hematite aciculae, and of $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions, and also by the absence of Zebra-striation structure. They may also be differentiated from synthetic amethysts by presence of straight color banding, solid inclusions, and $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions which are not found in synthetic materials.
Degradation behavior of the three commercial biodegradable polymers, namely poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) Sky-Green/sup R/ (SG) and Mater-Bi/sup R/ (MB) was investigated using bacteria isolated from activated sludge and farm soil. Three PHB degrading bacteria, three SG degrading bacteria and one MB degrading bacteria were isolated. The PHB degrading bacteria were identified to be Flavimonas oryzihabitans, Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum and Micrococcus diversus, while Pseudomonas vesicuraris, Pasteurlla multocida and Flavobacterium odoratum were identified as SG degrading bacteria. As for MB, Pseudomonas vesicuraris was isolated. The shake flask test for 28 days indicated that the rate of biodegradation of PHB, SG and MB in terms of weight loss were about 44∼69% 25∼32% and 29% respectively. The surface morphology of PHB, SG andMB films before and after degradation by microorganisms in an activated sludge soil was observed under SEM, demonstrating that the film surface had a very porous structure, and that microorganisms colonized heavily on the film surface. TOC and pH variation as a result of abiotic hydrolysis, or microbial growth in the absence of the polymers were compared to those due to degradation by F. oryzihabitans. Abiotic hydrolysis of PHB was three times as fast as that of SG and MB. Addition of yeast extract to the basal liquid medium accelerated the biodegradation of the polymers. Biodegradation of PHB was always faster than that of SG and MB irrespectively of the presence of yeast extract in the basal liquid medium.
The impurity profiles from the raw materials of glycyrrhizin were performed by the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/electrospray ionization (ESI)- mass spectrometry (MS). For the HPLC experiment, a $C_{18}$($3.9{\times}300mm$, $10{\mu}m$) column was used and the mobile phase was acetic acid/$H_2O$ (1:10):acetonitrile=3:2 with a flow rate of 0.8 ml/min. The effluent was splitted into the ratio of 50:1 and went into the ESI-MS. Three to six impurities were found and informed of the identification of the structure of the impurities by ESI-MS. And the structures of impurities were suggested to a hydroxy-glycyrrhizin which is added with hydroxy group (-OH) in the glycyrrhetic acid moiety and a reduced-glycyrrhizin which the position of 12 of the glycyrrhetic acid moiety is reduced. The purities of the standard materials were about 90%.

A hagfish bradykinin(BK)-related peptide was isolated and characterized from the skin of hagfish, Eptatretus burgeri. The hagfish BK with a molecular mass of 875.8 Da was purified to a homogeneity using $C_{18}$ reverse-phase and cation-exchange high performance liquid chromatography. The primary structure of the hagfish BK was determined as Gly-Thr-Ala-Gly-Ile-Gly-Pro-Phe-Arg by a combination of an automated amino acid sequencing and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. This amino acid sequence contains five substitutions $(Arg^1{\rightarrow}Gly,\;Pro^2{\rightarrow}Thr,\;Pro^3{\rightarrow}Ala,\;Phe^5{\rightarrow}Ile,\;Ser^6{\rightarrow}Gly)$ compared with that of mammalian BK. The hagfish BK showed a contractile action on the intestine of hagfish, Eptatretus burgeri. The threshold concentration of hagfish BK was around $10^{-11}\;M.$

While there are plenty of studies on synthesizing semiconducting germanium nanowires (Ge NWs) by vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process, it is difficult to inject dopants into them with uniform dopants distribution due to vapor-solid (VS) deposition. In particular, as precursors and dopants such as germane ($GeH_4$), phosphine ($PH_3$) or diborane ($B_2H_6$) incorporate through sidewall of nanowire, it is hard to obtain the structural and electrical uniformity of Ge NWs. Moreover, the drastic tapered structure of Ge NWs is observed when it is synthesized at high temperature over $400^{\circ}C$ because of excessive VS deposition. In 2006, Emanuel Tutuc et al. demonstrated Ge NW pn junction using p-type shell as depleted layer. However, it could not be prevented from undesirable VS deposition and it still kept the tapered structures of Ge NWs as a result. Herein, we adopt $C_2H_2$ gas in order to passivate Ge NWs with carbon sheath, which makes the entire Ge NWs uniform at even higher temperature over $450^{\circ}C$. We can also synthesize non-tapered and uniformly doped Ge NWs, restricting incorporation of excess germanium on the surface. The Ge NWs with carbon sheath are grown via VLS process on a $Si/SiO_2$ substrate coated 2 nm Au film. Thin Au film is thermally evaporated on a $Si/SiO_2$ substrate. The NW is grown flowing $GeH_4$, HCl, $C_2H_2$ and PH3 for n-type, $B_2H_6$ for p-type at a total pressure of 15 Torr and temperatures of $480{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals clear surface of the Ge NWs synthesized at $500^{\circ}C$. Raman spectroscopy peaked at about ~300 $cm^{-1}$ indicates it is comprised of single crystalline germanium in the core of Ge NWs and it is proved to be covered by thin amorphous carbon by two peaks of 1330 $cm^{-1}$ (D-band) and 1590 $cm^{-1}$ (G-band). Furthermore, the electrical performances of Ge NWs doped with boron and phosphorus are measured by field effect transistor (FET) and they shows typical curves of p-type and n-type FET. It is expected to have general potentials for development of logic devices and solar cells using p-type and n-type Ge NWs with carbon sheath.
