The structural properties of $SiO_2$ liquid at finite temperatures have been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations utilizing the Tersoff interatomic potential. During cooling process, the $SiO_2$ liquid structure quenched with a cooling rate of $1.0{\times}10^{11}K/sec$ shows the traditional properties observed in the experiments. The coordination defects of system decrease with decreasing temperature up to 17%. The $SiO_2$ glass quenched up to 1600 K contains defects consisting of the fivefold coordination of Si, and the threefold coordination of O atoms. The calculated diffusion coefficients which are calculated by monitoring. the mean-square displacement of atoms drop to almost zero below 3000 K ($<10^{-6}\;cm^2/sec$) but has a fluctuations at low temperature. The structure properties of $SiO_2$ liquid shows a significant dependence on the temperature during cooling process. Bond-angle distribution at around $120^{\circ}$ originate from the O and Si atoms consisting of the over-coordinated O atoms.
The reheating stage of electromagnetically stirred Al billet is a critical factor in the thixoforming process. When reheated to the solid-liquid state, the microstructure evolves to a more globular and more homogeneous structure by a coarsening mechanism, the kinetics depending on the initial microstructure. Microstructural evolution has been characterized by conventional parameters (mean size of particle and shape factor) as a function of holding time in the solid-liquid state. The aim of this study is to report experimental results concerning microstructural evolution in the solid-liquid state of electromagnetically stirred Al billet. The material was elaborated in the form of continuously cast bars solidified with electromagnetic stirring to degenerate the dendritic structure. The choice of the reheating conditions is determined by a dendritic ripening and coalescence mechanism, involving variations of both the shape and size of the particles. The reheating time has to be long enough to allow a minimum degree of spheroidizing, but has to be limited as much as possible in order to avoid excessive ripening. The optimum microstructure was obtained at the reheating temperature of near $584^{\circ}C$ and the holding time of 5 min. The only means of combining high productivity with good casting quality was to use feedstock billets whose microstructure showed rapid transformation characteristics.

A series of compounds consisting of 4'-oxybenzylidene-4-n-butylaniline, a mesogen, and a p-substituted phenoxyterephthaloyl structure a non-mesogen, interconnected through a central hexamethylene spacer were synthesized and their thermal behavior and liquid crystallinity were studied. p-Substituents included in this study are H, Cl, CN, $NO_2,\;n-C_4H_9O$ and phenyl groups. The compounds having phenyl and $n-C_4H_9O$ substituents are enantiotropic and form smectic-A(SA) and nematic (N) phases. The compound with $NO_2$ substituent is monotropic and forms only a nematic phase on heating the solid, whereas it forms nematic as well as $S_A$ phases on cooling the isotropic liquid. The rest compounds were found to be non-liquid crystalline. This is in great contrast to the fact that the monomesogenic model compound 4'-n-hexyloxybenzylidine-4-n-butylaniline forms $S_B,\;S_C,\;S_A$ and N phases enantiotropically.

In this work we report methods of formation of three-dimensional structures of particles in a liquid crystal host. We found that, under the appropriate conditions, the particles are captured and dragged by the moving isotropic/nematic front during the phase transition process. This movement of the particles can be enhanced significantly or suppressed drastically with the influence of an electric field and/or with changing the conditions of the phase transition, such as the rate of cooling. As a result, a wide variety of particle structures can be obtained ranging from a fine-grained cellular structure to stripes of varying periods to a course-grained "root" structures. Changing the properties of the materials, such as the size and density of the particles and the surface anchoring of the liquid crystal at the particle surface, can also be used to control the morphology of the three-dimensional particle network and adjust the physical properties of the resulting dispersions. These particle structures may be used to affect the performance of LCD's much as polymers have been used in the past.
Polyamic acid precursors were prepared by mixing various main chain dianhydrides, main chain diamines and side chain diamines. Copolyimide films with alkylcyclohexylbenzene as a side chain were prepared by thermal imidization of polyamic acid precursors. Pretilt angles on rubbed polyimides changed according to the side chain and main chain structures of the polyimide. Consequently, we found that LC pretilt angles of polyimide films with a liquid crystal structure as a side chain showed to be approximately 90$^{\circ}$ when a linear and rigid polyimide main chain and a side chain of suitable length were employed.
The coupled free vibration of flexible structures and on-board liquid in zero gravity space was analyzed, considering the spacecraft main body as a rigid mass, the flexible appendages as two elastic beams, and the on-board liquid as a "spring-mass" system. Using the Lagrangians of a rigid mass (spacecraft main body), "spring-mass" (liquid), and two beams (flexible appendages), as well as assuming symmetric motion of the system, we obtained the frequency equations of the coupled system by applying Rayleigh-Ritz method. Solving these frequency equations, which are governed by three system parameters, as an eigenvalue problem, we obtained the coupled natural frequencies and vibration modes. We define the parameter for evaluating the magnitudes of coupled motions of the added mass (liquid) and beam (appendages). It was found that when varying one system parameter, the frequency curves veer, vibration modes exchange, and the significant coupling occurs not in the region closest to the two frequency curves but in the two regions separate from that region.
For the optimal net shape forging of semi-solid materials (SSM), it is important to predict the deformation for variation of strain rate. It should be necessruy to conduct a formation of stress-strain curve in semi-solid alloys for analysis of the thixoforming process. Particularly, important problem to application of computer aided engineering in SSM processing is to prevent a segregation of liquid component during compression process. The liquid segregation is studied as multistage change of the strain rate and test piece size to prevent the liquid segregation during the compression process. The compression test for semi-solid aluminium alloy with a controlled solid fraction is performed by dynamic material test system with a furnace. Moreover morphology of structure and fraction of pore are investigated through compression test.
The structural analysis of liquid rocket engine was performed in the case of sinusoidal vibration load to verify structural safety. The finite element model is composed with main liquid rocket engine components, combustion chamber, turbopump, gas-generator, pyro-starter, main pipes, main valve, heat-exchanger, gimbal-mount and brackets. Natural vibration mode analysis and structural analysis for sinusoidal vibration load were performed. The natural mode frequency of liquid rocket engine is twice than that of launch vehicle. In the case of stress result of sinusoidal vibration load, the part of maximum stress has 1.4 margin, so the engine structure is safe for sinusoidal vibration load.

We demonstrated a solvent-assisted soft-lithographic patterning method for producing patterned structure and patterned ordering with lyotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) film. Experimental results showed that the liquid crystalline ordering of lyotropic film could be controlled by shearing effects of the fluidic solvent though the patterned mold channels. In this work, two types of lyotropic LCPs were used to investigate the effects of the alkyl chain length of the lyotropic LCP on producing liquid crystalline ordering through the solvent-assisted fluidic patterning.
