  • Blends of silicone rubber (VMQ) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were prepared by the melt mixing technique. Mechanical, XRD, thermal and dynamic mechanical investigations are reported for the pure silicone rubber and blends. The mechanical properties, viz. the tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break, of the silicone rubber decreased with the addition of LCP. The SEM study on the tensile fractured surface of the blends revealed that they had a two phase structure, and that the failure was mainly due to fiber pull out, which suggests that the VMQ and LCP are incompatible in all of the proportions examined in this study. However, the FTIR study shows that there was a partial interaction between the VMQ and LCP, but which may not be sufficient to grip the fibrils under the applied load. In the XRD analysis, it was observed that the crystalline structure of the silicone rubber deteriorated in the presence of LCP. The DMA study suggested that the storage modulus of the silicone rubber was improved with the addition of LCP, due to the high modulus of the LCP phase. The thermal stability of the silicone rubber was greatly reduced by the addition of LCP, due to the latter having a thermal stability lower than that of silicone rubber.

  • There is a growing demand for a high voltage silicone rubber composite with high mechanical property and high electrical property. The effect of modified cross-linking agent on the mechanical, electrical properties, and short-circuit test performance of silicone rubber insulators have been investigated. To use base polymer, the various silicone polymers were prepared by the equilibrium polymerization. Aluminum trihydrate surface was treated by vinyl silane. Liquid silicone rubber nanocomposite was prepared from the compounding of VPMPS, HPDMS, catalyst, and alumina trihydrate modified with 1,3,5-trivinyl-l,3,5-trimethylcyclotrisiloxane. The mechanical property and electrical property for insulation materials were measured, indicating the high tensile strength and the good short-circuit property.

  • Blends of silicone rubber (VMQ) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were prepared using a melt blending technique in the presence and absence of glass fiber and coupling agents. The effect of glass fiber and coupling agents on the thermal, dynamic mechanical, morphological pro-perties and cure characteristics of VMQ/LCP blends were studied. The vinyl silane coupling agent showed a significant effect on the above mentioned properties of VMQ/LCP blends by reacting at the interface between VMQ and LCP. The viscosity of the VMQ/LCP blends decreased with the addition of a coupling agent. A substantial improvement in storage modulus of VMQ/LCP blends was observed in the presence of glass fiber and coupling agents. However, as a coupling agent vinyl silane proved to be better than amine for the VMQ/LCP-glass-containing blends. The thermal stability of the pure silicone rubber was higher than those of the blends. This high thermal stability of silicone rubber was attributed to the Si-O-Si bonds. However, the thermal stability of the blends decreased further in the presence of a coupling agent, possibly due to a decrease in blend crystallinity.

  • Liquid PVC, which is used widely as fiber coating, has brilliant non-luster effect, but it decreases flexibility of coated fiber surface. We used liquid silicone rubber in elastomer series as a coating material to alleviate this problem. We have conducted the former liquid PVC processing and used pressure of roller and preliminary hardening of processing. In this experiment, We measured 70 degree of hardness, 10.3 MPa of tensile strength and 200fs of tensile elongation of Liquid PVC-coated plastic fiber. We measured 40 degree of hardness, 5.1 MPa of tensile strength and 460% of tensile elongation of Liquid silicone PVC-coated plastic fiber. Therefore, Without the second process, Liquid silicone rubber coating increased non-luster effect and flexibility of plastic fiber surface more than Liquid PVC coating.

  • Membrane process has been employed to separate a specific substance from gas or liquid mixture, and treat wastewater. This is due to the fact that the substance of mixture can be permeated and separated selectively by membrane. Since Initial equipment and operation costs are not expensive, membrane process has been adopted in various fields such as petroleum Industry, chemistry, polymer, electronics, foods, biochemical industry and wastewater treatment. In this study, $CaCO_3$ particles impregnated in silicone rubber network were extracted by using supercritical carbon dioxide and pore distribution of silicone $rubber-CaCO_3$ was investigated with varying amount of extract. Silicone rubber has excellent mechanical properties such as heat-resistance, cold-resistance etc. and $CaCO_3$ has microporous structure. It is possible to make silicone $rubber-CaCO_3$ composite sheets via work-intensive kneading processes. In so doing $CaCO_3$ particles become distributed and impregnated in silicone rubber network. Supercritical carbon dioxide diffuse through composite sample, then sample is swollen. $CaCO_3$ in silicone rubber network Is dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide, and its sites become pores. Pore distribution, pore shape and surface area are observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) micrograph and BET surface area analyzer examination respectively. Pore characteristics of membrane suggest the possibilities that the membrane can be used for process of mixture separation and wastewater treatment.

  • Cellulose production by Acetobacter pasteurianus was investigated in static culture using four bioreactors with silicone rubber membrane submerged in the medium. The shape of the membrane was flat sheet, flat sack, tube and cylindrical balloon. Production rate of cellulose as well as its yield on consumed glucose by the bacteria grown on the flat type membranes was approximately ten-fold greater than those on the non-flat ones in spite of the same membrane thickness. The membrane reactor using flat sacks of silicone rubber membrane as support of bacterial pellicle can supply greater ratio of surface to volume than a conventional liquid surface culture and is promising for industrial production of bacterial cellulose in large scale.

  • In multi-material injection molding, since two or more materials with different process conditions are used, it is essential to maximize process efficiency by operating the cooling or heating system to a minimum. In this study, Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) that can be cured at a low temperature suitable for the multi-material injection molding was selected and the cure behavior according to the process conditions was analyzed through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Dynamic measurement results of DSC with different heating rate were obtained, and through this, the total heat of reaction when the LSR was completely cured was calculated. Isothermal measurement results of DSC were derived for 60 minutes at each temperature from 80 ℃ to 110 ℃ at 10 ℃ intervals, and the final degree of cure at each temperature was calculated based on the total heat of reaction identified from the Dynamic DSC measurement results. As the result, it was found that when the temperature is lowered, the curing start time and the time required for the curing reaction increase, but at a temperature of 90 ℃ or higher, LSR can secure a degree of cure of 80% or more. However, at 80 ℃., it was found that not only had a relatively low degree of curing of about 60%, but also significantly increased the curing start time. In addition, in the case of 110 ℃, the parameters were derived from experimental result using the Kamal kinetic model.

  • Liquid silicon rubber (LSR) has fine thermal compatibility and is widely used in various fields such as medical care and automobiles because it is easy to implement products with good fluidity. With the recent development of flexible sensors, the focus has been on manufacturing conductive elastomers, such as silicone as elastic materials, and carbon black, CNT, and graphene are mainly used as nanomaterials that impart conductive phases. In this study, mechanical behavior and curing behavior were measured and analyzed to manufacture a CB-LSR complex by adding Carbon Black to LSR and to identify properties. As a result of the compression test, the elastic modulus tended to increase as carbon black was added. When the swelling test and the compression set test were conducted, the swelling rate tended to decrease as the content of carbon black increased, and the compression set tended to increase. In addition, DSC measurements showed that the total amount of reaction heat increased slightly as the carbon black content increased. It is considered that carbon black was involved in the crosslinking of LSR to increase the crosslinking density and have a positive effect on oil resistance reinforcement.

  • A micro syringe which can be attached to the end of a micro intravascular endoscope for drug injection is fabricated and its characteristic is tested. The syringe consists of a drug chamber and an actuator chamber which are separated by a silicone rubber membrane. The drug chamber is filled with liquid drug by the membrance actuation caused by the vaporization and condensation of the working liquid in the actuator chamber. The liquid drug is ejected by the electrolysis of the working liquid. The membrane deflection by each actuation method has been measured. The liquid ejection image has been captured during the electrolysis of the electrolyte. Also, the successful operation of the micro syringe under the normal blood pressure was verified.
