Plant biomass has been proposed as an alternative source of petroleum-based chemical compounds. Especially, aromatic chemical compounds can be obtained from lignin by depolymerization processes because the lignin consist of complex aromatic materials. In this study, kraft lignin, the largest emitted substance among several kinds of lignin in Korea, was used as a starting material and was characterized by solid-state $^{13}C$-Muclear Magnetic Resonance($^{13}C$-NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR), Elemental Analysis(EA). The depolymerization of kraft lignin was studied at water-phenol mixture solvent in near critical region and the experiments were conducted using a batch type reactor. The effects of water-to-phenol ratio and reaction temperature($300-400^{\circ}C$) were investigated to determine the optimum operating conditions. Additionally, the effects of formic acid as a hydrogen-donor solvent instead of $H_2$ gas were examined. The chemical species and quantities in the liquid products were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy(GC-MS), and solid residues(char) were analyzed using FT-IR. GC-MS analysis confirmed that the aromatic chemicals such as anisole, o-cresol(2-methylphenol), p-cresol(4-methylphenol), 2-ethylphenol, 4-ethylphenol, dibenzofuran, 3-methyl cabazole and xanthene were produced when phenol was added in the water as a co-solvent.
The multiphase flow simulator, CHEMPS, was developed based on the fractional flow approach reported in the petroleum engineering literature considering fully three phase flow in physically and chemically heterogeneous media. It is a extension of MPS developed by Suk and Yeh (2008) to include the effect of wettability on the migration of NAPL. The fractional flow approach employs water, total liquid saturation and total pressure as the primary variables. Most existing models are limited to two-phase flow and specific boundary conditions when considering physically heterogeneous media. In addition, these models focused mainly on the water-wet media. However, in a real system, variations in wettability between water-wet and oil-wet media often occur. Furthermore, the wetting of porous media by oil can be heterogeneous, or fractional, rather than uniform due to the heterogeneous nature of the subsurface media and the factors that affect the wettability. Therefore, in this study, the chemically heterogeneous media considering fractional wettability as well as physically heterogeneous media were simulated using CHEMPS. In addition, the general boundary conditions were considered to be a combination of two types of boundaries of individual phases, flux-type and Dirichlet type boundaries.

This study aims to develop an alternative energy like oil made from marine organic waste by marine products waste, spent fishing nets. There are already many commercial examples and case studies based on the petroleum industry-refuse plastic or refuse tire, however, it is rare that a research developing alternative energy from food waste and organic waste. Therefore, this study investigated the oil made from thermal decomposition under the high temperature and high pressure condition, and examined the possibility for commercial use by testing its own characteristics. A bio-oil from thermal decomposition at $250^{\circ}C$ and 40 atm was hard to remove impurities because of its high viscosity, showed lower caloric value than heavy oil, and generated various gases which were not appropriate for the use of fuel. It is noticeable that thermal decomposition was occurred at $250{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ using steam pressure, which much lower compared to the existing method of thermal decomposition, more than $500^{\circ}C$. Since the high viscosity of bio-oil, it is necessary a further study to use as liquid fuel.

In this study, we isolated bacteria from petroleum contaminated soil which were near to underground storage tanks(UST). Through the screen test, we selected high efficiency bacterium, KDi19, for biodegradation of diesel. KDi19 was identified as Pseudomonas sp. by 16S rDNA, fatty acid, and morphological physiological characteristics. KDi19 degraded 956.3 mg/L(95.6%) of 1,000 mg/L diesel for 48 hours(incubation condition : temperature; $30^{\circ}C$, cell concentration; 1.0 g/L, pH 7). At low temperature, $20^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, KDi19 respectively removed 63.9%, 18.5% and 17.0% of 1,000 mg/L diesel for 48 hours(cell concentration 1.0 g/L, pH 7). At low concentration of diesel, 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L, KDi19 degraded 97.9% and 96.2% of diesel for 24 hours(temperature; $30^{\circ}C$, cell concentration: 1.0 g/L, pH 7), respectively.
Diarrheal diseases constitute one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in infants and young children globally. One of the main microorganisms causing diarrheal diseases is Campylobacter jejuni. For treatment of these diseases, Portulaca oleracea has been widely used as a folk remedy for a long time. This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of P. oleracea against gastroenteritis pathogens including C. jejuni. P. oleracea was extracted with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethylacetate, methanol, and hot water. The antimicrobial activity of the P. oleracea extracts was determined using the paper disc method, minimum inhibitory concentration, and the liquid culture method. The 10 $mg/m{\ell}$ ethylacetate extract showed the strongest antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteriditis, and Shigella spp.. The hot water extract from P. oleracea showed the highest anti-microbial activity against C. jejuni at 10~20 $mg/m{\ell}$. The hot water extract of P. oleracea retarded the growth of C. jejuni for 36 hr at $42^{\circ}C$.
Succinic acid is an important precursor in industries producing biopolymers, pharmaceutical and food additives and green solvents. However, due to the high price of petroleum and the global $CO_2$ emission, the biological production of succinic acid from renewable biomass is a novel process due to the fixation of $CO_2$ into succinate during fermentation. In this study, aqueous two phase systems based on imidazolium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ were used as an effective separation and concentration process for succinic acid. Experimental results show that aqueous two phase systems can be formed by adding appropriate amount of imidazolium ionic liquids to aqueous $K_2HPO_4$ solutions in the presence of succinic acid. It can be found that the ability of imidazolium ionic liquids for phase separation followed the order [HMIm][Br]${\fallingdotseq}$[OMIm][Br]>[BMIm][Br]>[EMIm][Br]. The maximum value of extraction efficiency for succinic acid was about 90% and the amount of coextracted water into top phase is proportional to the chain length of cation in imidazolium ionic liquids. It was concluded that the aqueous two phase systems composed of imidazolium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ was effective for the selective extraction and concentration of succinic acid.
Several major polyacetylene compounds were isolated from the petroleum-ether fraction of fresh Korean ginseng roots through solvent fractionation. partition and silica gel column chromatography. Further separation of acetylenic compounds was accomplished by bonded normal phase HPLC utilizing a moderately nonpolar microparticulate column. The preparative separation for the various spectral measurements was carried out by low pressure preparative liquid chromatography. The chemical structure of these polyacetylenes separated was determined by UV. IR/FTIR. $^{1}H$ NMR. mass spectral and elemental analysis. These are identified to be heptadeca-1-en-4.6-diyn-3.9.l0.-triol [1] heptadeca-1.9-dien-4.6-diyn-3-ol. heptadeca-1.8-dien-4.6-diyn-3.10-diol and the 4th was denatured polyacetylene. heptadeca-1.4-dien-6.8-diyn-3.10-diol. Two different p-substituted benzoates of panaxynol were synthesized for the determination of exciton chirality. The circular dichroism spectra in the UV region show that panaxynol p-bromobenzoate and p-dimethyl-aminobenzoate constitute negative exciton chirality [2]. Isolated major polyacetylene compounds were irradiated in aerated solution with 300 nm UV light to obtain the oxidized product at the allylic alcohol center to corresponding carbonyl compounds such as heptadeca-1-en-4.6-diyn-9.10-diol-3-one and heptadeca-1.9-dien-4.6-diyn-3-one. These photooxidation compounds have en-on-diyne chromophore and undergo nucleophilic addition reaction with methanol to yield ${\beta}-methoxy$ carbonyl compounds such as heptadeca-9-en-4.6-diyn-1-methoxy-3-one and heptadeca-4.6-diyn-1-methoxy-9.10-diol-3-one.
Currently, portable equipment for recycling of waste asphalt concrete (ASCON) has been used. However, any air pollution control devices are not attached in the simple portable one. Thus, a lot of air pollutants have been produced from recycling processes of waste ASCON which resulted from aging of paved roads or repavement of roads. This study deals with a preliminary result of concentration analysis of air pollutants obtained from a pilot and a real recycling processes of waste ASCON using simple portable recycling equipment. Air pollutants were taken from 4 steps of the pilot recycling process including an initial heating by liquid petroleum gas (LPG), intermediate heating and melting (H&M) process, final H&M process, and pavement processes using recycled ASCON at the recycling site. Also, air pollutants were taken front 4 steps of the real recycling processes including an initial H&M, final H&M and mixing, loading of recycled ASCON to dump trucks, and at the recycling site after leaving the loaded dump trucks for real pavement sites. The air pollutants measured in this study include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aldehydes, particulate matter (PM: PM1, PM2.5, PM7, PM10, TSP (total suspended particulate)). The identified concentrations of VOCs increased with increasing time or degree for H&M of waste ASCON. In particular, very high concentrations of the VOCs at the status of complete melting, which is exposed to the air, of the waste ASCON just before paving tv the recycled ASCON at the recycling site. Also, considerable amount of VOCs were identified from the recycling equipment after the dump trucks leaded by recycled ASCON leaved the recycling site for the pavement sites. The relative level of formaldehyde exceeded 80% of the aldehydes Identified in the recycling processes. This is because the waste ASCON is exposed to direct flame of LPG during H&M processes. The PM concentrations measured in the winter recycling processes, such as the loading and rotation processes of waste ASCON into/in the recycling equipment for H&M, were much higher than those in the summer ones. In particular, the concentrations of coarse particles such as PM7 and PM10 during the winter recycling were very high as compared those during the summer one.
The bioethanol for use as a liquid fuel by fermentation of renewable biomass as an alternative to petroleum is important from the viewpoint of global environmental protection. Recently, many scientists have attempted to increase the productivity of bioethanol process by developing specific microorganism as well as optimizing the process conditions. In the present study, which is based on our previous investigation on the pretreatment process, theproductivity of bioethanol obtained from simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process was compared between various domestic materials including barley, brown rice, corn and sweet potato. Additionally, Solid glucoamylase (SGA; developed in Changhae Co.), from modified strain with UV, was used. The result was compared to commercial glucoamylase (GA). It was observed that the fermentation rate was increased together with the yield which can be derived from the final ethanol concentration. Especially, in the case of brown rice, compared to the experimental results using GA, the final ethanol concentration was 1.25 times higher and 18.4 g/L of the yield was increased. Also, the time required for reaching 95% of the maximum ethanol concentration is significantly reduced, which is approximately 36 hours, compared to 88 hours using GA. It means that SGA has excellent saccharogenic power.

Gas hydrates are inclusion compounds formed when small-sized guest molecules are incorporated into the well defined cages made up of hydrogen bonded water molecules. Since large masses of natural gas hydrates exist in permafrost regions or beneath deep oceans, these naturally occurring gas hydrates in the earth containing mostly $CH_4$ are regarded as future energy resources. The heat of dissociation is one of the most important thermal properties in exploiting natural gas hydrates. The accurate and direct method to measure the dissociation enthalpies of gas hydrates is to use a calorimeter. In this study, the high pressure micro DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimeter) was used to measure the dissociation enthalpies of methane, ethane, and propane hydrates. The accuracy and repeatability of the data obtained from the DSC was confirmed by measuring the dissociation enthalpy of ice. The dissociation enthalpies of methane, ethane, and propane hydrates were found to be 54.2, 73.8, and 127.7 kJ/mol-gas, respectively. For each gas hydrate, at given pressures the dissociation temperatures which were obtained in the process of enthalpy measurement were compared with three-phase (hydrate (H) - liquid water (Lw) - vapor (V)) equilibrium data in the literature and found to be in good agreement with literature values.
