  • This study presents an application of stochastic model for limit order book (LOB) dynamics to Korean Stock Index Futures (KOSPI 200 Futures). Since KOSPI 200 futures market is widely known as one of the most liquid markets in the world, direct application of an existing model is hardly possible. Therefore, we modified an existing model to successfully model and predict the dynamics of extremely liquid KOSPI 200 futures market.

  • In general, such methods as interferometers or wavefront sensors are commonly used for testing of an optical system and optical components. In these cases, the surrounding environments are unlikely to affect the measurements. On the other hand, intraocular lenses of hydrophilic materials with special properties experience a certain difficulty in testing the optical properties. An intraocular lens is dried in the air, which causes deformation and changes the optical characteristics such as index of refraction and thickness. Thus, it is hard to measure the optical characteristics of an intraocular lens by using common methods. In this study, a special structure is used for measuring of the transmission wavefront aberration and effective focal length of an intraocular lens of hydrophilic materials by using a Shark-Hartmann sensor among the various measuring methods. As an application of this measuring method, this study shows a simple method to measure the index of refraction of unknown liquids with a plano-convex lens with a well known index of refraction. Also, this method is used to measure the optical properties of a plano-convex such as index of refraction and curvature by using a liquid with a well known index of refraction.

  • We measured the refractive index of a mixed polymer (NOA61, NOA84) in the liquid and solid states. First we made a hollow prism and filled it with UV (ultraviolet) epoxy. Measurement of the apex angle and the minimum-deviation angle gave the refractive index of the liquid polymer. To measure the refractive index of the solid polymer, an additional structure was included in the hollow prism, and the UV epoxy filling in the hollow prism was hardened. In both cases of liquid and solid polymers, the refractive index of the mixed polymer turned out to be proportional to the mix ratio. These results provide a method to vary the focal length of a double stacked cylindrical microlens array using UV epoxy.

  • The fluid ensemble in the liquid lens, which is composed of electrolyte and silicone oil, is the key material system to vary the focal length processing of the electrochemical desorption. In order to characterize the capability of the liquid lens according to response time and optical range, we prepared a fluid ensemble comprising the electrolyte and oil. To elucidate the physical mechanism of the effective response time, we examined the viscosity dependency while satisfying the requirements for the density and refractive index of the electrolyte and oil, respectively. The characterization results indicated that the response time (up and down) is influenced by the viscosity of the electrolyte and oil. On this basis, we prepared a fluid ensemble capable of reversibly adjusting for the focal length of the liquid lens, as well as the response time. The ensemble is applicable to various systems such as micro-lens and optical sensors.

  • An electrically controllable fiber Bragg grating inscribed in a hydrogen-loaded standard single-mode fiber with liquid-crystal cladding is presented. Control of the optic axis of liquid crystals by means of external electric fields results in the change of reflectivity and Bragg wavelength of the grating. The increase of surrounding refractive index of a fiber makes effective refractive index of a propagation mode higher, which results in high field confinement and longer Bragg wavelength. The reduction of the fiber diameter by chemical etching process improves the long-range ordering of liquid-crystal molecules and reduces controlling voltage. The tunable ranges of reflectivity and Bragg wavelength of the liquid crystal-cladding fiber Bragg grating were $\~4.6dB\;and\;\~0.3nm$, respectively.

  • The characteristics of a photonic crystal fiber sensor with reuleaux triangle are studied by using the finite element method. The wavelength sensitivity of the designed optical fiber sensor is related to the arc radius of the reuleaux triangle. Whether the core area is solid or liquid as well as the refractive index of the liquid core contributes to wavelength sensitivity. The simulation results show that larger arc radius leads to higher sensitivity. The sensitivity can be improved by introducing a liquid core, and higher wavelength sensitivity can be achieved with a lower refractive index liquid core. In addition, the specific channel plated with gold film is polished and then analyte is deposited on the film surface, in which case the position of the resonance peak is the same as that of the complete photonic crystal fiber with three analyte channels being filled with analyte. This means that filling process becomes convenient with equivalent performance of designed sensor. The maximum wavelength sensitivity of the sensor is 10200 nm/RIU and the resolution is $9.8{\times}10^{-6}RIU$.

  • The compression index is one of the geotechnical properties which represent the compressibility of clay. The compression index are generally obtained from consolidation tests, otherwise it has been predicted by soil properties due to the efficiency time and cost. In this study, consolidation tests result for Busan and Inchon clays are analyzed to suggest the correlations between the compression index and soil properties. It is found that the compression index is well correlated with the void ratio and natural water contents. The prediction errors, which is difference of compression indices between measured from consolidation test and predicted by liquid limits, decrease with ${\Delta}e_0/e_L$.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate to the effect of liquid fertilizer with saponin (SLF) and liquid fertilizer with amino acid (ALF)on the growth of creeping bentgrass. In creeping bentgrass, turf color index, chlorophyll index, dry weight and shoot number were measured. It was hardly affected by SLF and ALF applications in investigation of chemical properties of the soil. By applying SLF and ALF, turf color index and chlorophyll index in 2SLF and 2ALF were increased more than CF, and shoot number and root length in 2SLF, ALF and 2ALF were higher than CF. In correlation coefficient among growth factors of creeping bentgrass, turf quality was significantly different in root length, shoot number, dry weight, and content of N and K in turf tissue (P<0.05), N content of tissue was significantly in root length, shoot number and dry weight (P<0.05), and K content was significantly in shoot number and dry weight (P<0.05). These results suggested that application of functional liquid fertilizers such as SLF and ALF was expected to replace compound fertilizer in turf management and that applied SLF and ALF was stimulated the uptake of N and K into turf so that turf qualities were improved by enhancing growth shoot and root of turf.

  • A selection methodology of liquid levelmeters, especially, level sensors in non-nuclear category, to be installed in nuclear energy facilities is developed using linguistic fuzzy approaches such as fully-linguistic and semi-linguistic methods. Depending on defuzzification techniques, the linguistic fuzzy methodology leads to either linguistic (exactly, fully-linguistic) or cardinal (i.e., semi-linguistic) evaluation. For the linguistic method, for each alternative, fuzzy preference index is converted to linguistic utility value by means of a similarity measure determining the degree of similarity between fuzzy index and linguistic ratings. For the cardinal method, the index is translated to cardinal overall utility value. According to these values, alternatives of interest are linguistically or numerically evaluated and a suitable alternative can be selected. Under given selection criteria, the suitable selections out of some liquid levelmeters for nuclear facilities are dealt with using the linguistic fuzzy methodology proposed. Then, linguistic fuzzy evaluation results are compared with qualitative result available in the literature. It is found that as to a suitable option the linguistic fuzzy selection is in agreement with the qualitative selection. Additionally, the comparative study shows that the fully-linguistic method using adequate scale system facilitates linguistic interpretation regarding evaluation results.
