  • The structural safety of prototype transport and storage containers for very low-level radioactive liquid waste was experimentally estimated for its localization development. Transport containers for radioactive liquid waste have been researched and developed, however, there are no standardized commercial containers for very low-level radioactive waste in Korea. In this study, the structural safety of the designated IP-2 type container capable of transporting and temporarily storing large amounts of very low-level liquid waste, which is generated during the operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants, was demonstrated. The stacking and drop tests, which were conducted to determine the structural integrity of the container, verified that there was no external leakage of the contents in spite of its structural deformation due to the drop impact. This study shows the effort required for the localization of the technology used in manufacturing transport and storage containers for very low-level radioactive liquid waste, and the additional structural reinforcement of the container in which the commercial intermediate bulk container (IBC) external frame was coupled.

  • In this paper, static characteristics of a cryogenic hydrostatic journal bearing which has 2-rows staggered recesses are numerically analyzed. The regime of operation of this bearing is fully turbulent with large fluid inertia effects. The turbulent lubrication equation is solved under the assumption that turbulence parameters are decided by the Reynolds numbers. Pressure drop caused by inertia effect at the recess edge is considered in this analysis. Also density and viscosity of working fluid are considered as function of only pressure. Numerical results for a cryogenic Hydrostatic journal bearing show pressure distribution, load capacity, flow rate, and recess pressure. The effects of turbulent flow, pressure drop and variable liquid properties are discussed.

  • This study was carried out to interpret mathematically hydraulic behaviour in packing tower which packed 50 mm plastic Hiflow-ring with a dimension of 300 mm wide and 1,400 mm high. In view of energy saving, the recent packing. 50 mm plastic Higlow-ring was superior to conventional packings because of low pressure drop in high loads. As relative error between numerically predicted and experimentally obtained values was less then 6% in the loading and flooding point, it found that therir results appeared to be adequate. Comparison of hose two values in both dry and wet packing conditions. relative errors amount to 3.96 and 5.6%, respectively. In order to evaluate the operating characteristics of packing, the type, size, and material for packings must be estimated in various system and loads. This study is able to calculated pressure drop, hold-up, gas and liquid loads using mathematical interpretation. For these calculation, the specific constants of each packings must be calculated first all. The method of mathematical interpretation in this study turned out to be superior to the existing methods because of reduced errors at loading and flooding point.

  • A theoretical and experimental study was carried out on the prediction of drop size distribution of the pressure swirl atomizer. Drop size distribution was obtained by using maximum entropy formal ism. Several constraints in the form of the definition of mean diameter were used in this formulation in order to avoid the difficulties of the estimating source terms. In this study $D_{10}$ was only introduced into the formulation as a constraint. A drop size obtained by using linear Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory was considered as an unknown characteristic length scale. As a result, the calculated drop size was agreed well with measured mean diameter, particularly with $D_{32}$. The predicted drop size distribution was agreed welt with experimental data measured wi th Malvern 2600.

  • Aerosol indirect radiative forcing of climate change is considered the most uncertain forcing of climate change over the industrial period, despite numerous studies demonstrating such modification of cloud properties and several studies quantifying resulting changes in shortwave radiative fluxes. Detection of this effect is made difficult by the large inherent variability in cloud liquid water path (LWP): the dominant controlling influence of LWP on optical depth and albedo masks any aerosol influences. Here we have used ground-based remote sensing of cloud optical depth (${\tau}_c$) by narrowband radiometry and LWP by microwave radiometry to determine the dependence of optical depth on LWP, thereby permitting examination of aerosol influence. The method is limited to complete overcast conditions with liquid-phase single layer clouds, as determined mainly by millimeter wave cloud radar. The results demonstrate substantial (factor of 2) day-to-day variation in cloud drop effective radius at the ARM Southern Great Plains site that is weakly associated with variation in aerosol loading as characterized by light-scattering coefficient at the surface. The substantial scatter suggests the importance of meteorological influences on cloud drop size as well, which should be analyzed in the further intensive studies. Meanwhile, it is notable that the decrease in cloud drop effective radius results in marked increase in cloud albedo.

  • In the present work, atomization characteristics of shear-thinning liquid slurry discharging from fan spray nozzles were studied experimentally for spray painting applications. The effects of solid particle size and concentration on the properties (especially on the viscosity) of suspensions and mean drop size were examined by using model fluids. In the range of low particle concentration (below 3 wt%), the fluid viscosity was primarily determined by the particle size. On the other hand, in the range of high particle concentration (higher than 10 wt%), the agglomeration phenomenon and the oil absorption capability of solid particles played major roles in determining the fluid viscosity. In the high concentration region, which most of the paints belong to, the fluid became more viscous and the shear thinning behavior appeared more prominent as the particle concentration was increased. In this region, mean drop size(SMD) decreased more rapidly with the increase of the injection pressure. Also, SMD became larger with the higher particle concentration and the larger particle size.

  • The spray and acoustic characteristics by the self-oscillation of a swirl coaxial injector were experimentally studied. The self-oscillation of a swirl coaxial injector is defined as pressure and flowrate oscillations by a time-delayed feedback between liquid and gas phase and has strong influences on atomization and mixing processes. Hence the occurrence and effect of the self-oscillation are measured using shadow photography technique, acoustic test and PDPA. The occurrence of self-oscillation largely depends on the injection conditions, such as pressure drop of liquid phase and relative momentum ratio. From the experimental results, self-oscillation occurs when the momentum of gas phase is enough large and the smaller the pressure drop of liquid phase is, the better self-oscillation occurs at the same momentum ratio. The self-oscillation is also affected by injector geometries, increasing the recess length results in the expansion of self-oscillation region and the increase of sound pressure level. The self-oscillation of a swirl coaxial injector accompanies a high intensity scream and this scream may provide harmful disturbances to combustion processes. Self-oscillation leads to strong changes in the drop size distribution and smoothly varies the slope of radial SMD distribution.

  • An experimental study on the performance of a liquid electric component cooling system was performed. The thermal resistance and pressure drop at a heat sink were measured, for aluminum waterblocks with four different internal shapes, with either smooth surface, porous media filling, or with fins of 5 mm height, or of 7 mm height. The fins had 0.5 mm thickness, and the gap between the fins was 0.5 mm. The waterblock internal dimension was $36.5{\times}36.5{\times}7mm$. Compared with the waterblock with smooth surface, the thermal resistance reduction was 11%, 46%, and 42% for waterblocks with porous media filling, 5 mm, and 7 mm fins, respectively. A new dimensionless parameter was suggested to evaluate the waterblock performance, with the simultaneous consideration of thermal resistance and pressure drop. The performance of the waterblock with fins of 5 mm height was best by parameter.

  • The demand of high speed and miniaturization of electronic devices results in increased power dissipation requirement for thermal management. In this work, the effects of microchannel width, height and liquid flowrate on the cooling performances of microchannel waterblock are investigated experimentally. The microchannel waterblock considered ranged in width from 0.5 to 0.9 mm, with the channel height being nominally 1.7 to 9 times the width in each case. The experiments were conducted using water, over a liquid flow rate ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 lpm. The base temperature, thermal resistance and pressure drop increase with increasing of liquid flow rate. The measured thermal resistances ranged from 0.10 to 0.23 $^{\circ}C$/W for the channel 5.
