Condenser cooling system & effluent disposal system for steam-electric power plants: Improved techniques

  • In India, the current operation of condenser cooling system & effluent disposal system in existing power plants aims to reduce drawal of seawater and to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge to meet the demands of statutory requirements, water scarcity and ecological system. Particularly in the Steam-Electric power plants, condenser cooling system adopts Once through cooling (OTC) system which requires more drawal of seawater and effluent disposal system adopts sea outfall system which discharges hot water into sea. This paper presents an overview of closed-loop technology for condenser cooling system and to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge plant in Steam-Electric power plants making it lesser drawal of seawater and complete elimination of hot water discharges into sea. The closed-loop technology for condenser cooling system reduces the drawal of seawater by 92% and Zero Liquid Discharge plant eliminates the hot water discharges into sea by 100%. Further, the proposed modification generates revenue out of selling potable water and ZLD free flowing solids at INR 81,97,20,000 per annum (considering INR 60/Cu.m, 330 days/year and 90% availability) and INR 23,760 per annum (considering INR 100/Ton, 330 days/year and 90% availability) respectively. This proposed modification costs INR 870,00,00,000 with payback period of less than 11 years. The conventional technology can be replaced with this proposed technique in the existing and upcoming power plants.

  • The plasma oscillation has been observed in an argon pressure between a tungsten anode and cathode consisting of an aqueous conducting solution. The effects of experimental parameters on the electrical characteristics of the glow discharge have been studied. The experimental parameters include the anode-cathode distance, pressure, methanol flow rate, and cathode materials.   • This paper describes the discharge characteristics of liquid nitrogen for plane-plane, needle-plane electrode at variation of gap spacing at atmospheric pressure. The important results obtained from this study are as follows. (1) Breakdown voltage of $LN_2$ for needle-plane electrode is higher than that of for plane-plane electrode and discharge duration tine is longer with increase of gap spacing at atmospheric pressure. (2) The formation of bubbles by evaporation is observed in spite of non-applying source at atmospheric pressure and the creation of corona confirmed for plane-plane electrode results from the bubbles. (3) The applied voltage-discharge magnitude( V-Q) characteristics of $LN_2$ showed hysteresis and the discharge magnitude decreasing and corona voltage increasing proportional to the pulse per second at atmospheric pressure.

  • This paper discusses electrical insulation characteristics at cryogenic temperature, especially focusing on partial discharge (PD) inception characteristics, for high temperature superconducting cables. In liquid nitrogen (L$N_2$) / polypropylene (PP) laminated paper composite insulation system, PD inception strength (PDIE) was evaluated in terms of volume effect and V-t characteristics. Different kinds of butt gap condition were applied in the experiments, using parallel plane and coaxial cylindrical cable samples. Experimental results revealed that the volume effect on PDIE could be evaluated by the statistical stressed liquid volume (SSLV) taking account the discharge probability not only in the butt gap but also in the other thin layers between PP laminated papers. Furthermore, the indices n of V-t characteristics at PD inception were estimated to be 80∼110, irrespective of the butt gap condition.

  • For an inverter-driven compressor, the discharge temperature increased with a rise of frequency, Therefore, it is necessary to control the discharge temperature at high frequencies in order to obtain system reliability and efficiency. This paper describes the effects of liquid injection system on the performance of an inverter-driven scroll compressor. Experiments were performed at ASHRAE-T conditions. Frequency was altered from 45 to 105Hz. As results of the present work, the refrigerant discharge temperature fur the injection system was dropped approximately $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ as compared to those for the non-injection system. The COP of the compressor was improved approximately $0.8{\sim}9.3%$ at high frequencies(75, 90, and 105 Hz).

  • This paper shows the discharge characteristics of liquid nitrogen under plane to plane electrode, needle to plance electrode, inserting teflon insulator in plane to plane electrode at atmospheric pressure. The main experimental device of this paper is cryostat. The important results obtained from this study are sa follows. Breakdown voltage of LN2 under N-P electrode is higher than that of under P-P electrode at atmospheric pressure. Breakdown duration time is longer with increase of electode gap under the P-P, N-P electrodes. The formation of bubbles by evaporation is observed in spite of non-applying source at atmospheric pressure and the creation of corona confirmed. Breakdown voltage and breakdown duration time are in proportion to increase of diameter in case of inserting teflon insulator. Partial discharge characteristics of thickness 0.5[mm] is that 채굼 voltage of teflon insulator rose with increase of diameter in each [pps].

  • The static electricity by thinner flow and discharge energy is investigated experimentally for the purpose of preventing the electrostatic discharge and damage. Test system for evaluating streaming electrification consists of a teflon pipe, a reservoir tank a pump, flowmeters and an electrometer. When dielectric liquid flows through a pipe from one vessel to another, the potential difference generated in the collecting vessel is due to the accumulation of charges. These charges result from the convection of a part of the electrical double layer existing in the tube at the contact between the liquid and the inner wall. When the fluid velocity increases, the electric current increases proportionally. The charging current and accumulated charges by streaming electrification at the thinner velocity of 40cm/s are measured a range of 5 nA and $0.27{\mu}C$ respectively. This amount of static discharge energy generated by streaming electrification is enough to ignite flammable solvent. Therefore surface electric potential should decrease by using electrostatic shielding and ground.

  • This paper describes the discharge characteristics of liquid $SF_6$ (-41$[^{\circ}]$, 1.7[atm]) and $LN_2$ for plane to plane, needle to plane, plane to needle and sphere to plane electrode with gap variations from 1[mm] to 12[mm]. From this result, the breakdown voltage was increased with increasing gap length. Especially, the formation of bubbles by evaporation was observed in spite of non-applying voltage source. A corona is created of the applying voltage from the bubbles on the electrodes applied voltage. We consider it equal mechanism of corona as void exists in solid insulator. The results of liquid $SF_6$ and $LN_2$ discharge characteristics were caused by bubble formed evaporation and applied electric field voltage. Corona was happened to weak bubble and was proceed to new bubble breakdown.

  • In this paper the experiments of insulation characteristics by temperature change of $SF_6$ gas and liquid $SF_6$ in model GIS(Gas Insulated Switchgear) were described. From this results, the breakdown voltage was increased with a drop of temperature and an increase of the inner pressure in model GIS. The ability of insulation in liquid $SF_6$ was higher than that of the highly pressurized $SF_6$ gas. A liquid $SF_6$ discharge characteristics was caused by bubble formed evaporation of liquid $SF_6$ and bubble caused by high electric emission. It is considered that these result are fundamental data for electric insulation design of superconductor and cryogenic application machinery which will be studied and developed in the future.

  • Three types of gas-liquid hybrid horizontal, vertical and needle-to-cylinder plasma reactors were fabricated. Through these reactors, a high-efficiency, eco-friendly cleaning concept that generates reactive active species generated in atmospheric plasma discharge and gas-liquid activation reaction of cleaning components through the potential difference within the electrode was presented. As a result of comparing the efficiency for cleaning performance, the needle-to-cylinder type reactor had the best characteristics. Through this study, it was confirmed that the gas-liquid hybrid atmospheric pressure plasma reactor has the potential to be applied to ultra-precision cleaning processes such as semiconductor processes.
