  • A liquid crystal device with switchable dynamic and memory modes was investigated and developed. The proposed device reveals the splay, $\pi$-twist, and bend states via selective switching among them. In the dynamic mode, the device is operated in the bend state, which exhibits a wide viewing-angle and a fast-response-time due to its self-compensated bend structure and flow-accelerated fast response time, respectively. In the memory mode, the permanent memory characteristics in the splay and $\pi$-twist sates are obtained, respectively. The switching mechanisms of the tristate device are also proposed.

  • The variations of the temperature field in a passenger compartment were measured by using a HSI true color image processing system and TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal) solution. This temperature measurement technique was proved to be useful for analyzing the ventilation flow. The flow field in the passenger compartment was visualized using a particle streak method with pulsed laser light sheet. The temperature field and flow field in the passenger copartment were affected significantly by the ventilation mode. The panel-vent mode heating had shorter elapse time to reach a uniform temperature than the foot-vent mode under the same ventilation condition and nonuniformity inside the passenger compartment could be minimized effectively by using the bilevel heating mode. The temperature increase rate in the rear passenger compartment was iower than the front compartment, especially in the vicinity of the rear seat occupants' knee level.

  • We demonstrated a high speed liquid crystal (LC) display mode based on a nonchiral smectic C LC in an antiparallel planar geometry. In this antiparallel planar nonchiral smectic C (APNSC) LC mode, analog gray scales and wide viewing properties are achieved using a stepwise thermal annealing process (STAP). Because of an initially stable LC alignment in large area through the STAP, the APNSC LC mode exhibits the characteristics of fast response and high contrast ratio. This new APNSC mode is suitable for processing the dynamic image at a video rate in the next-generation LCDs.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain a globa1 optimization of power consumption and viewing angle characteristic of reflective twisted nematic (R-TN) mode liquid crystal display (LCD) with sin81e polarizer and λ/4 plate. Our studies shout that with increasing the twist angle, a steepness of reflectance-voltage curve increase, operation voltages decreases, the region where contrast ratio (CR) greater than 10 increases but the reflectance of the white state starts to decrease at above the twist angle of 75$^{\circ}$. Above the twist angle of 90$^{\circ}$, the R-TN mode LCD shows the most favorable combination of low consumption and good viewing angle characteristic.

  • A transflective liquid crystal displays driven by fringe field switching mode of new concept is being suggested. The FFS mode is known to have the different twist angle distribution at the position when an operating voltage is applied. We make the cell design by using the different twist angle which has some region decided on transmissive region and other region used to reflective region. By optimizing simulation condition in the concept, we proposed new tansflective LCDs using FFS mode with single gap and single gamma characteristics.

  • Recently, the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode in liquid crystal displays has been used mainly for high image quality and high-resolution liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In this review paper, the fundamental switching principle of the FFS mode, with its excellence over other LC modes in electro-optic performance, will be described. In addition, the development history, present technical issues, and future of the FFS LCD will be discussed.

  • For the fast growing Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) TV market, it is essential to make the LCD panels to show moving images without any visual difficulties such as blurring or tailing. Owing to reduction of the cell gap and the improved Liquid Crystal (LC) mixtures with low viscosity, it is possible that our S-IPS TFT-LCDs feature a response time (R/T) as fast as 1-frame time (16ms) for a white-black operation and less than a 16rns in all gray levels without Over Driving Circuit (ODC) technology. Currently, mass production of the large size IPS panels with high speed has been successfully achieved. In order to achieve faster response time, new LC mixtures have been developed, optimizing the physical properties of rotational viscosity (${\gamma}$1) and elastic constants (Kii). Also, the LC mixtures with high elastic constant allow us to increase the cell gap. In this paper, realization of fast switching time in IPS mode with optimized '${\gamma}$1/Kii' parameter in the LC mixtures forms the core of this paper.

  • In this paper, a new Twisted Nematic (TN) transflective liquid crystal display configuration with single cell gap for both transmissive and reflective mode and without sub-pixel separation is proposed. The Transmittance vs. Voltage Curve (TVC) and Reflectance vs. Voltage Curve (RVC) are matched.

  • We have studied a liquid crystal (LC) mode (named locked super homeotropic (LSH)) in which the LCs aligned homeotropically are locked by surrounding walls such as cubic, hexagonal and cylinder. In the device, the vertically aligned LCs tilt down symmetrically around the center of the cell when a voltage is applied and thus it exhibits wide viewing angle. The structure of this LSH mode is suitable for large-sized display panels. since the LCs are locked in micro domains the LCs do not flow to the bottom of the panel by gravity. This mode is applicable to achieve high performance TFT-LCD TV because of high performance characteristics such as high contrast, high brightness, wide-viewing angle.

  • We have developed a novel vertical-alignment(VA) - 1/6$\pi$ mode that provides a wide viewing angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on a homeotropic polyimide (PI) surfaces. Good voltage-transmittance curves were achieved with the new VA - 1/6$\pi$ cell model without a negative compensation film. The viewing angle of a new VA -1/6$\pi$ cell without a negative compensation film was wider than that of a conventional VA cell. Finally, the wide viewing angle using the new VA-1/6$\pi$ cell mode can be achieved.
