To evaluate tritium level in some environmental samples, tissue-free water tritium (TFWT) and tissue-bound tritium (TBT) were analyzed in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles collected at 12 locations in Korea. The TFWT was recovered by freeze-drying of the samples and the TBT was obtained in the form of water by combustion of the dried samples. Tritium was measured by liquid scintillation counter. The concentrations of TFWT were in the range of $0.96{\sim}3.96 Bq/1,\; 0.83{\sim}3.40 Bq/1\;and\;1.02{\sim}3.01 Bq/1$ in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles, respectively. The mean specific activity ratios (TBT/TFWT) were 0.94, 1.71 and 1.39 in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles, respectiviely. This excess TBT in the samples may be attributed to the fact that the residence time of TBT in the plant is longer than that of TFWT. The specific activity ratio depends on the plant species, the exposed time to tritiated atmosphere, atmospheric moisture, temperature and diffusion factor.
This paper reports the amount of $^{222}Rn$ and $^{238}U$ in 18 sites of ground water and 30 sites of surface water. The instrument used to count $^{222}Rn$ activity was the liquid scintillation counter (LSC) which could resolute ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ radiations. And $^{238}U$ was analyzed by the inductively coupled plasma (ICP). Radon and Uranium were not detected in raw and treated water which were sampled in a water treatment plant. However, radon ($^{222}Rn$) was high concentration in ground water from Jeon-la, Gang-won. So was uranium ($^{238}U$) in case of ground water from Gang-won, Choong-chung. Radon ($^{222}Rn$) activities were detected less than 15 pCi/L at 5 sampling points, 15~300 pCi/L at 7 sampling points, 300~4000 pCi/L at 6 sampling points. However, Radon ($^{222}Rn$) activities of all ground water samples were less than 4,000 pCi/L, which was bellow American Alternative Maximum Contamination Level (AMCL). Uranium ($^{238}U$) concentrations were less than $0.1{\mu}g/L$ at 5 sampling points, from $0.1{\mu}g/L$ to $20{\mu}g/L$ at 13 sampling points. Uranium was not detected in about 30% of the whole samples, but the concentration ranged from relatively low to high concentrations depending on the sampling point. The minimum detectable activity (MDA) of radon was 15 pCi/L. and the detection limit of uranium was $0.1{\mu}g/L$.
$^{226}Ra$ in groundwater could be analyzed by various methods. LSC (liquid scintillation counter) is used to measure its activity of Ba co-precipitates with Hisafe III scintillation cocktail solution. Counting efficiency was obtained using NIST $^{226}Ra$ standard solution in triplicate and calculated $^{226}Ra$ concentration using the efficiency values. $^{226}Ra$ values of 19 groundwaters having Gross-${\alpha}$ concentrations of more than 5 pCi/L ranged from ND (${\leq}$ 0.1 pCi/L) to 1.18 pCi/L. Geologic settings of the 19 areas are composed of granitic rocks of Pre-Cambrian and Jurassic and Cretaceous, gneiss (schist) of Pre-Cambrian, and volcanic rocks of Cretaceous. No relationship was shown among $^{226}Ra$ a concentrations and in-situ water quality data, and Gross-${\alpha}$, uranium, radon concentrations.

A benzene synthesizer was manufactured and has been used for the treatment of the various samples such as wood, charcoal, shell and soil for radiocarbon dating using liquid scintillation counter. The experimental conditions were optimized in each successive step of the synthesis of carbon dioxide, acetylene and the final product of benzene. Fifteen hours operation of the benzene synthesizer leads to product yields consistently in excess of 85% based on the content of calcium carbonate for the organic samples. Purity of the synthesized benzene was measured to be more than 99.9% by GC/MS.
A lot of radioisotopes are applied to medical fields. It's very important to measure the activities on airborne radioiodine discharged in air from $Na^{131}I$ solutions and from patients treated with radioiodine. Also surface decontamination is another one important problem to be completly solved in the isotope laboratory where there is always the possibility of radiation contamination. The Authors measured the activities on airborne radioiodine with RI collector and scintillation counter. 1. The mean accumulative activity of airborne radioiodine discharged into air from $Na^{131}I$ solution was measured as $1.3{\times}10^{-3}/hr$ rate, and the maximum value was $1.8{\times}10^{-3}/hr$. 2. Radioactivity rate per hour of airborne iodine discharged into air from patients treated with $Na^{131}I$ was measured as $6.2{\times}10^{-5}/hr$ at 8 hour after administration of radioiodine and decreased into $2{\times}10^{-6}/hr$ after 24 hour. 3. Metalic surfaces such as stainless steel or aluminum are decontaminated 5 to 6 times more rapidly than wood and concrete surfaces. 4. Decontamination with wet wiping with detergent was 9 to 10 times more rapidly than dry wiping method, but dry wiping was useful for the first step to prevent spreading and flowing from liquid radioactive materials.

The long-lived fission product $^{99}Tc$ is present in large quantities in nuclear wastes and its chemical behavior in aqueous solution is of considerable interest. Under oxidizing conditions technetium exists as the anionic species $TcO_4^-$ whereas under the reducing conditions it is generally predicted that technetium will be present as $TcO_2{\cdot}nH_2O$. Technetium oxide was prepared by reduction of a technetate solution with $Sn^{2+}$. The concentration of total technetium and Tc(IV) species in the solutions were periodically determined by separating the oxidized and reduced technetium species using a solvent extraction procedure and counting the beta activity of the $^{99}Tc$ with a liquid scintillation counter. The experimental results show that the rate of oxidation of Tc(IV) in simulated groundwater and redistilled water is about $(1.49{\~}1.86){\times}10^{-9} mol/(L{\cdot}d$) under aerobic conditions, but Tc(IV) in simulated groundwater and redistilled water is not oxidized under anaerobic conditions. Under aerobic or anaerobic conditions the solubility of Tc(IV) oxide in simulated groundwater and redistilled water is equal on the whole.

Recently, the interest in NDMA(N-nitrosodimethylamine) has increased due to its recognition as a pollutant by Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy and California Department of Health Sciences. It is, in fact, one of the DBPs(Disinfection By-products) which appears due to chlorination and is reported to be fatal if exposed continuously to human body. Due to uncertainty in mechanism to remove it, its treatment is not yet carried out. In this experiment, treatment of biological NDMA is carried out by letting it adsorbed on Granular Sludge and then filtering the medium through MF(Microfiltration) and UF(Ultrafiltration) membranes. Granular Sludge is adapted to aerobic and anaerobic conditions for 7 days and the experimental conditions are MLSS of 8000mg/L, COD of 250mg/L, TN of 12.5mg/L, and TP of 2.5mg/L. Several batch tests were carried out and samples were collected with the interval of 1 hour. Samples were measured by LSC(Liquid scintillation counter) after filtering by MF and UF. In batch test with granular sludge the permeate concentrations(removal efficiencies) of NDMA by MF and UF were 71.7ng/L(32.0%) and 62.0ng/L(43.7%) at aerobic state, and 52.0ng/L(49.2%) and 47.6ng/L(58.9%) at anaerobic state, respectively. Hence, UF membrane showed about 10% more removal efficiency than MF and removal efficiency at anaerobic condition was 15% more than that at aerobic condition.
In this study, the recovery rates of the dissolution method for radioactivity analysis of expandable polystyrene (EPS) with a liquid scintillation counter (LSC) using tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene, and acetone as solvents were estimated. The detection efficiency calibration curve for each solvent was derived. Two methods-the volumetric ratio method and the quenching agent method-were used to prepare quench source sets, and calibration curves were derived by linking the data from the two quench source sets. The R2 value of the calibration curve for THF was found to be 0.984. The relationship between the mass of dissolved EPS and the quench level was estimated: the quench level increased as the mass of dissolved EPS increased. Premix and postmix dissolution methods were tested. The recovery rates using THF with the premix method were 84.9 ± 0.9% and 96.5 ± 1.5% for 3H and 14C, respectively. Furthermore, the stability of the recovery rate over time when using THF was evaluated. The dissolution method with the premixed solution exhibited a more stable recovery rate over time. The dissolution methods were found to be applicable for analysis using LSC, and THF was found to be the most suitable solvent for the proposed method.
Tritium was extracted from tritium-contaminated aluminum samples by heating it in a high-temperature furnace at 200, 300, or 400 ℃ for 15 h. The extracted tritium was analyzed by using a liquid scintillation counter (LSC); the sample thicknesses were 0.4 and 2 mm. The differences in tritium extraction over time were also investigated by cutting aluminum stick samples into several pieces (1, 5, 10, and 15) with the same thickness, and subsequently heating them. The results revealed that there are most of the hydrated material based on tritium on the surface of aluminum. When the temperature was increased from 200 or 300 ℃-400 ℃, there are no large differences in the heating duration required for the radioactivity concentration to be lower than the MDA value. Additionally, at the same thickness, because the surface of aluminum is only contaminated to tritiated water, cutting the aluminum samples into several pieces (5, 10, and 15) did not have a substantial effect on the tritium extraction fraction at any of the applied heating temperatures (200, 300, or 400 ℃). The proportion of each tritium-release materials (aluminum hydrate based on tritium) were investigated via diverse analyses (LSC, XRD, and SEM-EDS).
Ni-63 is pure beta source which emits low energy beta particles. The Ni-63 sources were fabricated to develop the beta-voltaic battery which converts decay energy into electrical energy for power generation. Activity distribution of the source was important factor of power producibility of the beta-voltaic battery. Liquid scintillation counter widely used for measurement of low energy beta emitters was not suitable to measure activity distribution. In this study, we used the peeled-off Gafchromic™ EBT3 film to measure the activity distribution of the Ni-63 source. Absorbed dose was increased proportionally to the source activity and exposure duration. The low energy beta particles could transport the energy into the active layer without the polyester protective layer. Also, Activity distribution was measured by using the peeled-off EBT3 film. Two-dimensional dosimetric distribution was suitable to measure the activity distribution. To use the peeled-off EBT3 film is user-friendly and cost-effective method for quality assurance of the Ni-63 sources for the beta-voltaic battery.
