  • The combustion performance tests of a 30 tonf-class full-scale combustion chamber performed with water as a coolant were described. The combustion chamber has chamber pressure of 53bara and propellant flow mass rate of 90kg/s. Since it was first firing test for 30tonf-class combustion chamber using channel cooling, water coolant mass flow .ate of 35kg/s and 18kg/s were performed which correspond to 110% of kerosene design volume flow rate and equivalent cooling performance of kerosene. The test results are described and the results showed that the water cooling performance of this combustion chamber is sufficient and the firing test is feasible using the kerosene as a coolant.

  • A study about the fatigue life of copper alloy which is used in inner jacket of regenerative cooling chamber of liquid rocket engine has been performed. Mechanical properties of the material and fatigue life have been taken from tensile tests and low-cycle fatigue tests at room temperature and several elevated temperatures. Original universal slopes method, modified universal slopes method, Mitchell's method, Baumel and Seeger's method, and Ong's method have been used for predicting the fatigue data. It was found that the novel life prediction method should be developed for the copper alloys since almost all data have not been predicted well with the widely used methods.

  • The combustion chamber and nozzle of a liquid rocket engine should be protected from the high temperature combustion gas generated by the chamber. An upper-stage nozzle extension has a large expansion ratio, therefore, The light-weight refractory materials have been used since the weight impact on the launcher performance is crucial. Gas film cooling and ablative cooling methods were used before, but were not applicable nowadays. Radiative cooling method with niobium alloy, Ni-based superalloy and ceramic based composite has been used to this day.

  • A liquid-monopropellant hydrazine thruster has several outstanding advantages such as relatively-simple structure, long/stable propellant storability, clean exhaust products, and so on. Therefore hydrazine thruster has such a wide application as orbit and attitude control system (ACS) for space vehicles. A hydrazine thruster with the medium-level thrust to be used in the ACS of space launch vehicles (SLV) has been developed, and its ground firing test result is presented in terms of thrust, impulse bit, temperature, and chamber pressure. It is verified through the performance test that the response and repeatability of thrust are very excellent, and the thrust efficiencies compared to its ideal requirement are larger than 93%.

  • A series of combustion test was done to verify the optimization result of a gas generator for a 10 ton thrust liquid rocket engine. An injector element is F-O-F impinging type injector and the test was conducted with kerosene/LOX propellants. Test results of combustion temperature and pressure show a very good agreement with optimal design result and verify that the design method was properly established. And turbulence ring revealed its effectiveness in enhancing combustion gas mixing and temperature difference in the radial direction showed only less than 15K. Also turbulence ring induced only 3.2% pressure loss in the combustion chamber, which is far less than conventional level observed in a gas turbine engine. Axial temperature distribution also shows that turbulence ring could effectively reduce about 10% or more in gas generator length if its location is properly selected.

  • The basic data obtained in this research for single element performance were directly applied to the design of injector head(7 elements). Designed performance of the 7-element Swirl Coaxial injector was $245kg_f$ sea level thrust with 20bar combustion chamber pressure. Numerical analysis were performed to obtain the change of spray pattern for the design of injector head, and we confirmed the feasibility and application of those results. Hot tests were performed for the multi-element injector to compare with the performance of the single element injector and those can be applied to the design of scaled liquid rocket engine. The basic data obtained in this research can be directly applied to the real liquid rocket injector design.

  • We conducted the firing test with the regenerative cooling LRE and calculated the heat flux from measured coolant temperature, that was compared with the heat flux predicted by previously developed numerical analysis method. The difference between the measured heat flux and the numerical calculation value was within nine percents. Therefore, developed numerical analysis method can be applied to the design/fabrication of a real LRE system. and, it was investigated that combustion pressure and mixture ratio have an Influence on the heat flux with a constant relation.

  • A regenerative cooling system has been designed through empirical 1-D analysis for a liquid rocket engine of 30-ton-level thrust. The hot-gas-side wall temperature from 1-D analysis shows 100K difference compared to 3D CFD analysis. Two variations of design with same cooling performance are suggested for different maximum channel widths i.e., 4mm and 2mm. The coolant pressure drop of the latter design is higher by 20%. The maximum liner temperature is about 700K when TBC and the thermal resistance of carbon deposit are considered. So film cooling is recommended to increase the cooling capacity as the present cooling capacity is insufficient

  • The purpose of the study was to establish the design procedure and develop the program for designing regenerative cooling system. To obtain the design parameter necessary for the realization of regenerative cooling system, water-cooled regenerative cooling system was designed from suggested procedure. To compare experimental results with a present method of analytically predicting the heat transfer loads, $250kg_{f}$ experimental LRE with water-cooled regenerative cooling system was investigated. Based on the investigation, the good correction between the predicted and measured data was verified. Developed design program can be used to designing Kerosene- cooled regenerative cooling system. The basic experimental data and correlations obtained in this study for 250kgf experimental LRE with water-cooled regenerative cooling system can be directly applicable to the real LRE.
