In the paper, the dynamic characteristics obtained from hot-firing tests of 1/2.5-scale thrust chamber for 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine were described. To investigate the dynamic characteristics by engine start transient period and chamber pressure variation, hot-firing tests were performed in the chamber pressures of 30 bar and 60 bar. According to these variations, combustion stability in the combustion chamber was examined.

C/SiC composites were developed by a liquid silicon infiltration(LSI) method for use as heat-resistant parts of solid and liquid rocket propulsion engines. The heat resistance characteristics according to the composition ratio (carbon / silicon / silicon carbide) were evaluated by specimen test through arc plasma, supersonic torch test. An ablation equation for oxidation reactions was presented. Through the combustion test it was verified that various parts such as nozzle insert, exit cone and combustion chamber heat resistant parts for rocket propulsion can be manufactured and proved high ablation performance and thermal structure performance.

Firing tests have been performed for a 30 tonf-class full-scale regeneratively cooled combustion chamber. It was the first model which has welded construction of the injection head and the combustion chamber. A number of firing tests have been performed to evaluate combustion efficiency, regenerative cooling performance and durability of the combustor. This paper describes the results of firing tests performed at the design and off-design conditions which correspond to the chamber pressure of 60 bar, 68 bar respectively and the O/F ratio of 2.5 and 2.8 respectively. The data at each test condition have provided successful results in terms of combustion performance, combustion stability and durability. The tests are considered to be quite meaningful in the sense that the technologies for kerosene regeneratively cooled combustion chamber are successfully proven.

This study provides a brief introduction to application of the computational fluid dynamics to domestic development of combustion devices for liquid-propellant rocket engines. Multi-dimensional flow analysis can provide information on the flow uniformity and pressure loss inside the propellent manifold, from which the design selection can be performed during the conceptual design phase. Multi-disciplinary performance analysis of the thurst chamber can also provide key information on performance-related design issues such as fuel film cooling and thermal barrier coating conditions. Further efforts should be made to develop numerical models to resolve the mixing and combustion characteristics of LOX/kerosene near the injection face plate.

In order to build a transient simulation program for a high thrust liquid rocket engine(LRE), a static performance simulation program for components were made. The components were the thrust chamber (combustion chamber and supersonic nozzle), centrifugal pump (impeller and volute casing), impulse turbine, and flow control devices (control valve and orifice). Simplified mathematical models based on classical thermodynamic and inviscid theories were used to remove complexity and enhance the utility of the program. We examined the results of each program qualitatively for validate each component modeling.

Simulating combustion tests have been performed to elucidate the effect of baffle gaps on the optimal damping characteristics in liquid rocket combustors where coaxial injectors are installed. Amplitude of pressure oscillation in model combustion chamber and the combustion stability margin are used to quantify the damping capacitance of baffles. Satisfactory agreement has been achieved with the results of cold acoustic tests. Present results have shown that the optimal gap for high acoustic damping capacity has also the large combustion stability margin in simulating combustion tests. Therefore, the present results can be utilized to determine the baffle length and optimal gap in full-scaled rocket combustors.

It was designed and tested at the design point that an oxidizer rich preburner for a staged combustion liquid rocket engine propelled by kerosene and LOx. The oxidizer rich preburner was designed as some of LOx injected from the mixing head was burned with kerosene and the rest of LOx injected from injection holes in the regenerative cooling chamber was vaporized by combustion gas. The preburner is operated at OF ratio of 60 and combustion pressure of 20 MPa. The Preburner has a honey-comb type mixing head with simplex swirl injectors, a turbulence ring improving combustion stability and uniformity of product gas temperature distribution, and a nozzle simulating the duct. With the combustion test results at the design point, the oxidizer rich preburner showed high combustion stability and uniformity of product gas temperature distribution.

For turbulent spray combustion flows a coupled numerical procedure was developed, This method was discretized by using generalized curvilinear coordinates to handle complex geometries. The preconditioning and eigenvalue rescaling techniques were employed to provide efficient convergences over a wide range of subsonic Mach numbers. The accuracy was validated by simulating the laminar cavity flow. The film cooling effect of a liquid rocket engine (KSR-III) were investigated by a spray combustion analysis. The film cooling showed a negative effect on the combustion efficiency. In the combustion chamber wall, the film cooling effect was revealed to be promoted by the production of fuel rich zone.

A genetic algorithm (GA) has been employed to optimize the major design variables of the liquid rocket engine. Pressure of the main combustion chamber, nozzle expansion ratio and O/F ratio have been selected as design variables. The target engine has the open gas generator cycle using the LO2/RP-1 propellant. The gas properties of the combustion chamber have been obtained from CEA2 and the mass has been estimated using reference data. The objective function has been set as multi-objective function with the specific impulse and thrust to weight ratio using the weight method. The result shows about 4% improvement of the specific impulse and 23% increase of the thrust to weight ratio. The Pareto frontier line has been also obtained for various thrust requirements.

A linear acoustic analysis is conducted to examine bituning of acoustic resonators for acoustic damping in a combustion chamber of liquid rocket engine. Bituned resonators are tuned to the two principal modes, the first tangential(1T) and the first radial(1R) modes. First, the acoustic-damping effect of monotuned resonators is investigated. The damping capacity is quantified by damping factor as a function of the number of the resonators monotuned to 1T or 1R mode. Next, the damping characteristics of the bituned resonators are investigated. From the numerical data, the number of resonators, to be tuned to 1T and 1R modes, respectively, can be selected properly.
