  • A design plan was proposed for determining combustor configuration of regenerative- cooled liquid rocket engine in the process of preliminary design. Rocket performance and regenerative cooling results were calculated using the properties of combustion gas estimated in CEA. For required thrust, chamber pressure, atmosphere pressure and propellant mixture ratio the mass flow rate of propellants and combustor performance were predicted using one-dimensional and experimental equations. Finally, determinable plan for contour of combustor were presented through Rao nozzle design method.

  • A basic design for a Technical Development Model (TDM) of liquid oxygen lines from the turbopump exit to the oxidizer valves of the combustion chamber and the gas generator was conducted to develop a turbopump-fed liquid rocket engine. The TDM is composed of straight lines, elbows, bellows, a branch, an orifice, flanges and a heat insulator. Materials were determined by consideration of operation conditions, weight constraint and manufacturing procedures. The size and the location of each component were determined by flow analysis of the required flowrate and the pressure loss. Basic designs of the components were conducted by consideration of the operating temperature and the maximum expectation operating pressure. The safety factors were evaluated by structural analysis of design of each component.

  • The combustion chamber and nozzle of a liquid rocket engine should be protected from the high temperature combustion gas generated by the chamber. An upper-stage nozzle extension has a large expansion ratio, therefore, The light-weight refractory materials have been used since the weight impact on the launcher performance is crucial. Gas film cooling and ablative cooling methods were used before, but were not applicable nowadays. Radiative cooling method with niobium alloy, Ni-based superalloy and ceramic based composite has been used to this day.

  • This paper presents experimental results of dynamic characteristics of fuel-rich gas generators. Pressure fluctuation measurements in the chamber and manifolds have been analyzed. Gas-generator-alone tests revealed stable combustion regardless of a chamber pressure but low-frequency combustion instabilities occurred for cases of turbine-manifold tests at chamber pressure conditions below 50 bar. The instabilities are considered as an axial resonant mode and acoustic intensity increases along with a chamber pressure.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) has been employed to optimize the major design variables of the liquid rocket engine. Mass flow rate to the main thrust chamber, mass flow rate to the gas generator and chamber pressure have been selected as design variables. The target engine is the open gas generator cycle using the LO2/RP-1 propellant. The objective function of design optimization is to maximize the specific impulse with condition of energy balance between the pump and the turbine. The properties of the combustion chamber have been obtained from CEA2. Pump & turbine efficiencies and properties of the gas generator have been modeled mathematically from reference data. The result shows 3~4% errors for the specific impulse and 2~6% errors for the pump power of the gas generator cycle compared to references.

  • The present study presents a numerical methodology for early conceptual trade-off study between propulsive performance, cooling efficiency, weight and size, in which combustion and cooling precesses in regeneratively cooled rocket thrust chamber are interactively simulated. To address the capabilities and reliability of the design tool, some application results are given involving contour design, performance analysis, and wall cooling prediction as well as a systematic design evaluation.

  • In liquid oxygen/kerosene liquid rocket engines, kerosene is not only a propellant but also plays a role as a coolant to protect the combustion chamber wall from 3,000 K or more combustion gas. Since kerosene is exposed to high temperature passing through cooling channels, it may undergo heat-related chemical reactions leading to precipitation of carbon-rich solids. Such kerosene's thermal and fluidic characteristic test data are essential for the regeneratively cooled combustion chamber design. In this paper, we investigated foreign studies related to regenerative cooling channel and kerosene. Starting with general information on hydrocarbon fuels including kerosene, we attempted to systematically organize sedimentary phenomena on cooling channel walls, their causes/research results, coking test equipments/prevention methods, etc.

  • In rocket systems, somtimes special devices or equipments are installed near the nozzle exit area where high temperature and pressure combustion gas flows. To pretect these subsystems from severe thermal environment, it is necessary to have accurate thermal data measured from the experimental liquid rocket firing test. Test variables were combustion pressure (200, 300, 400 psi) and mixture ratio (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) and quartz was used as a heat probe. Measurement technique used in this research can be also applied to measure the radiative heat flux inside the combustion chamber which is important imput data for the liquid rocket regenerative cooling system design.

  • A numerical study for spray combustion of fluctuated fuel and oxidizer droplets injected into combustion chamber has been conducted for the analysis of spray combustion considering characteristics of injector. The 2 dimensional unsteady state flow fields have been calculated by using QUICK Scheme and SIMPLER Algorithm. As the spray model, DSF model and Euler-Lagrange Scheme have been used. The sine Auction has been used for droplet fluctuation model of fuel and oxidizer, while the coupling effects of the droplets between gas phase and evaporated vapor have been calculated by using PSIC model.
