The effects of Cr and Fe addition on the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloys prepared by direct energy deposition were investigated. As the Cr and Fe concentrations were increased from 0 to 2 mass%, the tensile strength increased because of the fine-grained equiaxed prior ${\beta}$ phase and martensite. An excellent combination of strength and ductility was obtained in these alloys. When the Cr and Fe concentrations were increased to 4 mass%, extremely fine-grained martensitic structures with poor ductility were obtained. In addition, Fe-added Ti-6Al-4V resulted in a partially melted Ti-6Al-4V powder because of the large difference between the melting temperatures of the Fe eutectic phase (Ti-33Fe) and the Ti-6Al-4V powder, which induced the formation of a thick liquid layer surrounding Ti-6Al-4V. The ductility of Fe-added Ti-6Al-4V was thus poorer than that of Cr-added Ti-6Al-4V.

In this report, the plasmonic nanopores of less than 5 nm diameter were fabricated on the apex of the pyramidal cavity array. The metallic pyramidal pit cavity can also utilized as the plasmonic bioreactor, and the fabricated Au or Al metallic nanopore can provide the controllable translocation speed down using the plasmonic optical force. Initially, the SiO2 nanopore on the pyramidal pit cavity were fabricated using conventional microfabrication techniques. Then, the metallic thin film was sputter-deposited, followed by surface modification of the nanometer thick membrane using FESEM, TEM and EPMA. The huge electron intensity of FESEM with ~microsecond scan speed can provide the rapid solid phase surface transformation. However, the moderate electron beam intensity from the normal TEM without high speed scanning can only provide the liquid phase surface modification. After metal deposition, the 100 nm diameter aperture using FIB beam drilling was obtained in order to obtain the uniform nano-aperture. Then, the nanometer size aperture was reduced down to ~50 nm using electron beam surface modification using high speed scanning FESEM. The followed EPMA electron beam exposure without high speed scanning presents the reduction of the nanosize aperture down to 10 nm. During these processes, the widening or the shrinking of the nanometer pore was observed depending upon the electron beam intensity. Finally, using 200 keV TEM, the diameter of the nanopore was successively down from 10 nm down to 1.5 nm.

An optical interference method was developed for measuring rapidly growing and evaporating liquid condensate films (e.g., Na$_{2}$SO$_{4}$, $K_{2}$SO$_{4}$) on solid surface exposed to flowing combustion product gases at film thicknesses well below the onset of complications due to run-off. To develop this optical system, this study investigated the optical parameters (e.g., polarization state, incident angle, target roughness, etc.) Trends for the Na$_{2}$SO$_{4}$(l) and $K_{2}$SO$_{4}$(l) deposition rates as a function of target temperature using this optical measuring system agree with the theoretical prediction of the vapor deposition. This study was able to extend the experimental range for vapor plus condensed phase transport and deposition. While previously unable to measure the evaporation rates interferometrically, these rates are estimated from the results of the investigation of polarization states.

Thin films of polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) is a promising material for use in large-area electronic devices. Especially, the poly-Si can be used in high resolution and integrated active-matrix liquid-crystal displays (AMLCDs) and active matrix organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLEDs) because of its high mobility compared to hydrogenated _amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). A number of techniques have been proposed during the past several years to achieve poly-Si on large-area glass substrate. However, the conventional method for fabrication of poly-Si could not apply for glass instead of wafer or quartz substrate. Because the conventional method, low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) has a high deposition temperature ($600^{\circ}C-1000^{\circ}C$) and solid phase crystallization (SPC) has a high annealing temperature ($600^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$). And also these are required time-consuming processes, which are too long to prevent the thermal damage of corning glass such as bending and fracture. The deposition of silicon thin films on low-cost foreign substrates has recently become a major objective in the search for processes having energy consumption and reaching a better cost evaluation. Hence, combining inexpensive deposition techniques with the growth of crystalline silicon seems to be a straightforward way of ensuring reduced production costs of large-area electronic devices. We have deposited crystalline poly-Si thin films on soda -lime glass and SiOz glass substrate as deposited by PVD at low substrate temperature using high power, magnetron sputtering method. The epitaxial orientation, microstructual characteristics and surface properties of the films were analyzed by TEM, XRD, and AFM. For the electrical characterization of these films, its properties were obtained from the Hall effect measurement by the Van der Pauw measurement.

In the Linford group at Brigham Young University we have recently developed three new sets of materials for three different areas of separations science: thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and solid phase microextraction (SPME). First, via microfabrication we have grown patterned carbon nanotube (CNT) forests on planar substrates that we have infiltrated with inorganic materials such as silicon nitride. The coatings on the CNTs are conformal and typically deposited in a process like low pressure chemical vapor deposition. The resulting materials have high surface areas, are porous, and function as effective separation devices, where separations on our new TLC plates are typically significantly faster than on conventional devices. Second, we used the layer-by-layer (electrostatically driven) deposition of poly (allylamine) and nanodiamond onto carbonized poly (divinylbenzene) microspheres to create superficially porous particles for HPLC. Many interesting classes of molecules have been separated with these particles, including various cannabinoids, pesticides, tricyclic antidepressants, etc. Third, we have developed new materials for SPME by sputtering silicon onto cylindrical fiber substrates in a way that creates shadowing of the incoming flux so that materials with high porosity are obtained. These materials are currently outperforming their commercial counterparts. Throughout this work, the new materials we have made have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, etc.

Polycrystalline $Ti_{1-x}Co_xO_2$ thin films on $SiO_2$ (200 nm)/Si (100) substrates were prepared using liquid-delivery metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Microstructures and ferromagnetic properties were investigated as a function of doped Co concentration. Ferromagnetic behaviors of polycrystalline films were observed at room temperature, and the magnetic and structural properties strongly depended on the Co distribution, which varied widely with doped Co concentration. The annealed $Ti_{1-x}Co_xO_2$ thin films with $x{\leq}0.05$ showed a homogeneous structure without any clusters, and pure ferromagnetic properties of thin films are only attributed to the $Ti_{1-x}Co_xO_2$ (TCO) phases. On the other hand, in case of thin films above x=0.05, Co clusters formed in a homogeneous $Ti_{1-x}Co_xO_2$ Phase, and the overall ferromagnetic (FM) properties depended on both $FM_{TCO}$ and $FM_{Co}$. Co clusters with about 10nm-150nm size decreased the value of Mr (the remanent magnetization) and increased the saturation magnetic field.
$Sr_xBi_{2.4}Ta_2O_9$ (SBT) thin films of 150 nm thickness were prepared using LSMCD (Liquid Source Misted Chemical Deposition) process with variation of the Sr/Ta mole ratio of 0.35~0.65, and their crystalline phase, microstructure, ferroelectric properties and leakage current characteristics were investigated. Ferroelectric characteristics of the LSMCD-derived SBT films were optimized at the Sr/Ta moleratio of 0.425. The remanent polarization (2Pr) and coercive field (Ec) of the SBT film with the Sr/Ta mole ratio of 0.425 were measured as 15.01 $\mu$C/$ \textrm{cm}^2$ and 41 kV/cm at an applied voltage of $\pm$5 V respectively. LSMCD-derived SBT films with the Sr/Ta mole ratio of 0.35~0.5 exhibited leakage current densities lower than $10^{-5} A/\textrm{cm}^2$ at an applied field of 100 kV/cm, and excellent fatigue-free characteristics of the remanent polarization decrement less than 1% after $10^{10}$ switching cycles at$\pm$5 V.
Single-crystalline InSb nanowire was synthesized on $SiO_2$ wafer via vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism using chemical vapor deposition method. According to the source container system (open or close) which contain InSb powder and $SiO_2$ wafer, the single-crystalline InSb nanowires have different growth mechanisms. Structural characterization of the InSb nanowires was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Composition of the nanowires was investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). This study demonstrates that length and diameter of the InSb nanowires are long and thick using open-boat system by VLS and additional vapor-solid (VS) mechanisms, because open-boat system can carry a large amount of vapor-phase InSb precursor than close-boat system.

There has been an increased interest in the mitigation of wax deposition because wax, which usually accumulates in subsea oil-production systems, interrupts stable oil production and significantly increases the cost. To guarantee a required oil flow by mitigating wax deposition, we need to obtain a reliable estimation of the wax deposition. In this research, we perform simulations to understand the major mechanisms that lead to wax deposition, namely molecular diffusion, shear stripping reduction, and aging. While the model variables (shear reduction multiplier, wax porosity, wax thermal conductivity, and molecular diffusion multiplier) can be measured experimentally, they have high uncertainty. We perform an analysis of these variables and the amount of water and gas in the multiphase flow to determine these effects on the behavior of wax deposition. Based on the results obtained during this study for a higher wax porosity and molecular diffusion multiplier, we were able to confirm the presence of thicker wax deposits. As the shear reduction multiplier decreased, the thickness of the wax deposits increased. As the amount of water increased, there was also an increase in the amount of wax deposits until 40% water cut and decreased. As the amount of gas increased, the amount of wax deposits increased because of the loss of the light hydrocarbon component in the liquid phase. The results of this study can be utilized to estimate the wax deposition behavior by comparing the experiment (or field) and simulation data.
