When a recess is applied to a swirl coaxial injector that uses liquid and gas propellants, a self-pulsation phenomenon in which the spray oscillates at regular intervals may occur. The phenomenon is caused by the interaction between the liquid and gas propellants inside the injector recess region. The propellants' kinetic energies are expected to affect significantly the spray oscillation. Therefore, cold-flow tests using helium as a gas-simulating propellant were conducted and compared with the results of the previous study using air. Dynamic pressure was measured in the injector manifold and frequency characteristics were investigated through the fast Fourier transform analysis. In the experimental environment, the helium density was about seven times lower than the air density. Accordingly, the intensity of pressure fluctuations was confirmed to be greater when air was used. At the same kinetic energy condition, the perturbation frequency was almost identical in the low flow rate conditions. However, as the flow rate increased, the self-pulsation frequency was higher when helium was used.
The cryogenic cooling load from the top plate of cryostat to liquid helium surface, including wall conduction, thermal radiation and current leads, is investigated in a closed cryostat system for superconducting magnet. In general methods of load estimation, individual load is calculated separately, however they are actually coupled each other because of natural convection of helium vapor. Using relevant heat transfer analysis, we calculate cryogenic load with taking into account the effect of natural convection. Cryogenic load is under-estimated approximately 1% when the natural convection is ignored. The difference between actual cooling load and cooling load by individual calculation increases with supplying current.

The heat transfer characteristics between liquid lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) and helium are of great significance for the two-loop cooling system based on an accelerator-driven system (ADS). This paper presents an experimental study on the resistance characteristics and heat transfer performance in a LBE-helium experimental loop of ADS. Pressure drops in the LBE loop, the main heat transfer, and the coupled heat transfer characteristics between LBE and helium are investigated experimentally. The temperature of LBE has a significant effect on the LBE thermo-physical properties, and is therefore considered in the prediction of pressure drops. The results show that the overall heat transfer coefficient increases with the increasing helium flow rate and the decreasing inlet temperature of helium. Increasing the LBE Reynolds number and LBE inlet temperature promotes the heat transfer performance of main heat transfer and thus the overall heat transfer coefficient. The experimental results give an insight into the flow and heat transfer properties in a LBE-helium heat exchanger and are helpful for the optimization of an ADS system design.
Due to the demand of the cold neutron flux in the neutron science and beam utilization technology, the cold neutron source (CNS) has been constructed and operating in the nuclear research reactor all over the world. The majority of the heat load removal scheme in the CNS is two-phase thermosiphon using the liquid hydrogen as a moderator. The CNS moderates thermal neutrons through a cryogenic moderator, liquid hydrogen, into cold neutrons with the generation of the nuclear heat load. The liquid hydrogen in a moderator cell is evaporated for the removal of the generated heat load from the neutron moderation and flows upward into a heat exchanger, where the hydrogen gas is liquefied by the cryogenic helium gas supplied from a helium refrigeration system. The liquefied hydrogen flows down to the moderator cell. To keep the required liquid hydrogen stable in the moderator cell, the CNS consists of an in-pool assembly (IPA) connected with the hydrogen system to handle the required hydrogen gas, the vacuum system to create the thermal insulation, and the helium refrigeration system to provide the cooling capacity. If one of systems is running out of order, the operating research reactor shall be tripped because the integrity of the CNS-IPA is not secured under the full power operation of the reactor. To prevent unscheduled reactor shutdown during a long time because the research reactor has been operating with the multi-purposes, the introduction of the standby cooling system (STS) can be a solution. In this presentation, the design considerations are considered how to design the STS satisfied with the following objectives: (a) to keep the moderator cell less than 350 K during the full power operation of the reactor under loss of the vacuum, loss of the cooling power, loss of common electrical power, or loss of instrument air cases; (b) to circulate smoothly helium gas in the STS circulation loop; (c) to re-start-up the reactor within 1 hour after its trip to avoid the Xenon build-up because more than certain concentration of Xenon makes that the reactor cannot start-up again; (d) to minimize the possibility of the hydrogen-oxygen reaction in the hydrogen boundary.

When reactivity insertion such as refueling occurs in CANDU reactors, the power and the water levels are tilted in the upper outer zone of the LZCS (Liquid Zone Control System) and fluctuate unstably for a certain period of time (1-5 days). The instability described above is observed in most CANDU reactors in service around the world, but its root cause is unidentified and no solutions to this problem have been established. Therefore, this study attempted to prove experimentally and analytically that the root cause lies in the hold-up of light water on the top of the TSP (Tube Support Plate) due to the mismatch between net volumetric flow rate of light water and helium crossing the narrowed porous TSP installed within the LZCS compartment. Our method was to perform a hydrodynamic simulation of in/outflow of light water and helium. Two solutions for the aforementioned instability of LZCS are suggested. One is to regulate the compartment for both inflowing helium gas and outflowing light water; the other is to enlarge the flow paths of helium and light water within TSP. The former may be applicable to nuclear reactors in service and the latter to those planned for construction.
