The main purpose of this study is to provide basic information of droplet burning, extinction process and flame behavior of methanol fuel and improve the ability of theoretical prediction of these phenomena. For the improved understanding of these phenomena, this paper presents the experimental results on the methanol droplet combustion conducted under various initial droplet diameters ($d_0$), ambient pressure ($P_{amb}$), and oxygen concentration ($O_2$) conditions. To achieve this, the experimental study was conducted in terms of burning rate (K) with normalized droplet diameter ($d/d_0$), flame diameter ($d_f$) and flame standoff ratio (FSR) under the assumptions that the droplet combustion can be described by both the quasi-steady behavior for the region between the droplet surface and the flame interface and the transient behavior for the region between the flame interface and ambient surrounding.
The objective of this work is to elucidate the details of two key factors dominating the droplet buring behavior in sprays : droplet-droplet interaction and convective flow. The combustion of a one-dimensional linear droplet array with a convective flow has been studied. A one-step, second order model was employed to simulate the chemical reaction in the combustion process. Results for droplet arrays burning at two Reynolds numbers, 50 and 100, two horizontal droplet spacings, 5 and 11 radii, and two vertical droplet spacing, 2 and 4 radii, were obtained. The results indicate the droplet burning behavior is affected by Reynolds number, droplet-droplet spacing, and the relative location of droplets in the array. Droplet-droplet interaction was found to be strong for arrays with smaller droplet spacing.

Carbon Capture and Storage with ocean sequestration is being considered as one of the most effective option for reducing the $CO_2$ net flux from atmosphere nowadays. But it is still possible for $CO_2$ substance to leaks out from transport pipeline or from the under seabed storage sites and causing damage to ambient environment. The behavior of liquid $CO_2$ under droplet shape would be strongly affected by the presence of other contaminants such as $SO_2$ comes from processing processes. This presentation shows the behavior in the sea water of pure liquid $CO_2$ droplets as well as droplets that consist of $SO_2$ substances. The study uses computational fluid dynamic models in comparison with experimental data from other previous researchers. Droplet of liquid $CO_2$ is assumed to be released at several depths in deep ocean, with other environmental conditions are set up respectively. All calculations are conducted with many different ratio of contaminant $SO_2$ to provide fundamental data of those particles rising characteristics. The effect of contaminants on the behavior of $CO_2$ droplets would be clearly shown through the results of particle deformation, terminal rising velocity happen due to buoyancy force driving from the difference in density of $CO_2$ substance and ocean water around.
In this study, the breakup characteristics of mono disperse droplets were studied with various fuels, ethanol, diesel fuel, biodiesel fuel extracted from soybean oil, and pure water. In order to investigate the droplet behavior in air cross-flow conditions, the experimental equipment was composed of a droplet generator with an air nozzle, and a high-magnification photo detecting system. Droplets produced by the droplet generator were injected into the air stream flowing normal to a direction of liquid drop jet. Digital images of the droplet behavior in air flow field were recorded by controlling the air flow rate. From the inspections, droplet breakup mechanism is primarily classified into the two kinds of stage, first breakup stage and second breakup stage. At the first breakup stage, droplet deformation rate seems to be affected by the force induced by the surface tension and the viscosity. On the other hand, at the second breakup stage, droplet is broken up mainly induced by the surface tension, so the breakup transition can be divided by the regular Weber number.
In this study, the behavior of water droplet impacting on a thin horizontal orifice was investigated. The impact behavior modes, transition velocities and diameters of daughter droplets were analyzed by changing the droplet velocity, orifice diameter and orifice thickness. Four typical modes of impacting droplet on an orifice were observed. The single-droplet and double-droplet transition velocities increased with increasing the orifice thickness and decreased with increasing the orifice diameter. On the other hand, the multi-droplet transition velocity decreased and then increased as the orifice diameter increased. At thin orifice thickness, the single droplet diameter approximated the orifice diameter, and increasing the orifice thickness produced a droplet larger than the orifice diameter. In the case of double droplet mode, the diameter of the first droplet showed a similar tendency like the single droplet mode, but the diameter of the second droplet was smaller than that of the first droplet, and the difference between them was affected more by the orifice thickness.

The solubility, the surface concentration and the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide in deep sea were numerically investigated. Base on the calculations the relations between the surface concentration of liquid carbon dioxide droplet with the hydrate film and the solubility and those between the ambient carbon dioxide concentration in the plume and the dissolution rate were obtained. The result show that a carbon dioxide droplet is released both at 1000 m in depth with the initial droplet diameter of 0.011 m or less and at 1500 m in depth with a diameter of 0.015 m or less, and the droplet is completely dissolved below 500 m in depth. The hydrate film acts as a resistant layer for the dissolution of liquid carbon dioxide, and the effect of the hydrate film on the dissolution of liquid carbon dioxide depended upon the depth.
Characteristics of droplet vaporization at high ambient pressures and temperatures which are supercritical conditions is studied numerically by formulating one dimensional vaporization model in liquid dodecane and air. Modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used to condider real gas effect. Non-ideal behavior of properties at near critical and supercritical conditions is considered in the high pressure condition. Characteristic spatial distribution of properties with various conditions of pressure and temperature is evaluated in order to understand vaporizing evolution.

This study investigates the evaporation characteristics of paired sessile droplets on a heated substrate. In particular, the evaporation time and contact line behaviors were analyzed based on the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The contact line behavior and volume variations were visualized using the shadowgraph method. It was observed that the contact diameter and contact angle exhibited similar behavior for both single and paired droplets regardless of the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The paired droplets demonstrated a longer evaporation time than the single droplet due to the vapor accumulation between the droplets. Furthermore, the scaled lifetime, defined as the ratio of evaporation time between paired and single droplets, increased as the droplet-to-droplet distance decreased and decreased as the substrate temperature increased, attributed natural convection.

An inviscid axisymmetric model capable of predicting droplet bouncing and the detailed pre-impact motion, influenced by the ambient pressure, has been developed using boundary element method (BEM). Because most droplet impact simulations of previous studies assumed that a droplet was already in contact with the impacting substrate at the simulation start, the previous simulations could not accurately describe the effect of the gas compressed between a failing droplet and the impacting substrate. To properly account for the surrounding gas effect, an effect is made to release a droplet from a certain height. High gas pressures are computationally observed in the region between the droplet and the impact surface at instances just prior to impact. The current simulation shows that the droplet retains its spherical shape when the surface tension energy is dominant over the dissipative energy. When increasing the Weber number, the droplet surface structure is highly deformed due to the appearance of the capillary waves and, consequently, a pyramidal surface structure is formed; this phenomenon was verified with our experiment. Parametric studies using our model include the pre-impact behavior which varies as a function of the Weber number and the surrounding gas pressure.

Microdroplet deposition in a micro-groove is studied numerically. The droplet shape is determined by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating a sharp-interface modeling technique for accurately enforcing the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface and the no-slip and contact angle conditions at an immersed solid surface. The computations are carried out to investigate the droplet behavior derived by the interfacial characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases. The effects of contact angle, impact velocity and groove geometry on droplet deposition in a micro-groove are quantified.
