Electrospraying comprises the generation of liquid droplets by applying a high voltage to the surface of a liquid. By monitoring the current and the flow rate it was possible to obtain a stable cone jet mode in a given condition. In this work the liquid contained NaCl particles resolved in distilled water. The NaCl particles increased concentration of the ionized solution and thus increased electrical conductivity of the liquid, which was inversely proportional to the flow rate in the cone jet mode. A number of sprayed droplets were sampled and dried enough, and then the size of NaCl particles were measured. The measured droplet diameter was a little larger than two theoretical diameters, Rayleigh diameter and mobility diameter.
In this paper an experimental study of a spray created by two impinging jets is presented utilizing a novel two-reference-beam double-pulse holographic technique. Visualization of the overall spray pattern as well as measurements on the size and velocity of the droplets were performed with the special emphasis on the effect of physical properties of liquids. The overall spray pattern clearly revealed the inherent wave nature In the disintegration process of this type of atomization. The structure of liquid elements near the impingement point is indicative of the mechanisms of the disintegration process. Surface tension plays an important role in the droplet size without any noticeable effect on the spray pattern, whereas viscosity affects the structure without any significant effect on the droplet sire. The droplet velocities were not affected by liquid properties.
In the present study, experiments on the film boiling of liquid droplets on oxidized copper surface was conducted. The shape of pure water droplets was observed, and the evaporation rate of them was measured during the film boiling evaporation process. The droplet of initial volume 16 ~ 30 µl was applied onto the oxidized copper surface heated up to 300 ~ 500℃, then the shape of the droplet was analyzed during the film boiling evaporation. Experimental results showed that there was good correlation between dimensionless volume and dimensionless time. However, a significant difference in evaporation rate for small and large droplets discussed in previous study was not found.
The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, autoignition, and combustion of liquid fuel spray injected into high pressure environment. In order to represent these phenomena realistically, discrete droplet model (DDM) which simulates the spray using finite number of representative droplets was adopted for detailed consideration of the finite rate of uansport between liquid and gas phases. The Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation was used to analyze the two-phase interactions. The high pressure vaporization model was applied using the thermodynamic and phase equilibrium at droplet surface. The high pressure effect as well as high temperature effect was considered in the calculation of liquid and gas properties. The characteristics of spray in high pressure environment were explained by comparison with normal pressure case.

Microdroplet deposition in a micro-groove is studied numerically. The droplet shape is determined by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating a sharp-interface modeling technique for accurately enforcing the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface and the no-slip and contact angle conditions at an immersed solid surface. The computations are carried out to investigate the droplet behavior derived by the interfacial characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases. The effects of contact angle, impact velocity and groove geometry on droplet deposition in a micro-groove are quantified.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the atomizing characteristics of a two phase spray by using a liquid column type coaxial nozzle. The experiments have been carried out to analyze the atomization behavior, the droplet size distributions, and the statistical properties of droplet size distributions. Immersion sampling method and the image processing technique were adapted for the measurements of particles, and the distributions of the droplet sizes were statistically analyzed. In the experiments, the mass ratio defined as Mr= $M_{\sigma}$/ $M_{1}$ has been changed from 1.0 to 3.4 and the measurements have been performed along the axis of the spray. As a result of this experimental study, the distributions of droplet size were satisfied with the Log-Normal distributions and arithmetic mean diameter and deviation of mass ratio. Droplet volume-surface mean diameter was denoted by a exponential function of mass-ratio and the exponent was denoted by linear relation according to the central axis from the nozzle. Dispersions, skewness factors and flatness factors had comparatively constant values regardless of mass ratio and location.

Combustion of liquid-fuelled combustion in a high-temperature vitiated-air stream was studied. The mathematical formulation comprise the application of Eulerian conservation equation to the gas phase and Lagrangian equation of droplet motion. The latter is coupled with a droplet-tracking technique (PSI-CELL Model) which regard the droplet phase as a source of mass, momentum, and energy to the gaseous phase. Reaction rate is determined by taking into account the Arrhenius reaction rate based on a single-step reaction mechanism. The calculated profiles show somewhat uncertainess at the upstream, but bases data for designing the combustor followed by 2-phase flow were obtained.
We present a direct numerical simulation technique and some preliminary results of the capillary spreading of a droplet containing particles on the solid substrate. We used the level-set method with the continuous surface stress for description of droplet spreading with interfacial tension and employed the discontinuous Galerkin method for the stabilization of the interface advection equation. The distributed Lagrangian-multipliers method has been combined for the implicit treatment of rigid particles. We investigated the droplet spreading by the capillary force and discussed effects of the presence of particles on the spreading behavior. It has been observed that a particulate drop spreads less than the pure liquid drop. The amount of spread of a particulate drop has been found smaller than that of the liquid with effectively the same viscosity as the particulate drop.
In order for studying pressure-coupled dynamic responses of droplet vaporization, open-loop experiment of an isolated droplet vaporization exposed to pressure perturbations in stagnant gaseous environment is numerically conducted. Governing equations are solved for flow parameters at gas and liquid phases separately and thermodynamic parameters at the interfacial boundary are matched for problem closure. For high-pressure effects, vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics is rigorously treated. A series of parametric calculations in terms of mean pressure level and wave frequencies are carried out employing a n-pentane droplet in stagnant gaseous nitrogen. Results show that wave instability in view of pressure-coupled vaporization response seems more susceptible at higher pressures and higher wave frequencies. Mass evaporation rate responding to pressure waves is amplified with increase in pressure due to substantial reduction in latent heat of vaporization. Augmentation of perturbation frequency also enhances amplification due to the reduction of phase differences between pressure perturbation and surface temperature fluctuation.
In order to investigate the droplet size distribution and Sauter Mean Diameter in a ultra high pressure diesel spray, fuel was injected with ultra high pressure into the environments of high pressure and room temperature by an Electronic Hydraulic Fuel Injection System. Droplet size was measured with the immersion liquid sampling technique. The immersion liquid was used a mixture of water-methycellulose solution and ethanol. The Sauter Mean Diameter decreased with increasing injection pressure, with a decrease environmental pressure (back pressure) and nozzle diameter. Increasing the injection pressure makes the fuel density distribution of the spray more homogeneous. An empirical correlation was developed among injection pressure, air density, nozzle diameter and the Sauter Mean Diameter of spray droplets.
