Solvent Assisted Micromolding을 이용한 Polyimide 나노구조 형성 및 이를 통한 균일 액정 배향 (Nanostructuring the Polyimide Alignment Layer and Uniform Liquid Crystal Alignment by Solvent Assisted Micromolding)

  • 정보전달 매체 중 시각을 통하여 우리에게 정보를 제공해 주는 디스플레이는 직관적으로 정보를 전달해 줌으로써 매우 중요한 정보전달 수단이라고 할 수 있으며 액정표시장치는 디스플레이 중에서 가장 많이 보급되어 있는 정보전달기기라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 액정디스플레이 제작을 위하여 필수적인 러빙 기반 액정 배향 공정을 대체할 수 있는 공정으로서 solvent assisted micromolding을 연구하였으며 가장 일반적인 액정 배향막인 polyimide에 나노구조를 형성함으로써 균일하게 액정 배향을 달성하고자 하였다. Polyimide 나노구조 형성 시 공정 온도에 따라 용매에 의한 고분자 용해효과와 몰드의 나노구조 안으로 polyimide 분자의 모세관 효과 사이의 상보적 상관관계가 존재하였으며 최적온도 도출을 통해 높은 단차를 갖는 나노구조를 형성할 수 있었다. 이러한 나노구조는 액정 분자를 균일하게 배향할 수 있었으며 일정한 선경사각을 형성할 수 있음을 증명하였다.

  • The ratio of optimized concentration on optical characteristics for phase-separated composite organic films (PSCOF) liquid crystal display is 30% of pre-polymer (NOA65) and 70% of ferroelectric liquid crystal (Felix). The layer structure in ferroelectric liquid crystal cell made by 30% NOA65 and 70% Felix materials is tilt-bookshelf layer structure. The angle of tilt-bookshelf structure are 17$^{\circ}$, 12$^{\circ}$ which are almost same of tilt angle of ferroelectric liquid crystal in Sm $C^{\ast}$ phase. We know that this result is from compensating the layer buckling. In this paper, we will discuss the effect of layer structure in PSCOF cell on ratio of concentration between pre-polymer and liquid crystal by x-ray measurements. We believe that technology of PSCOF is a good solution to solve the problems of align-defect and mechanical shock for future TV application and plastic LCD.

  • We have studied the pressure-dependent liquid crystal's dynamics in a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal panel with thin film transistor by applying an external pressure to it. When the external pressure is applied to the panel in a dark state, the disclination lines were generated as a light leakage whereas they did not appear in a simple test cell that has only pixel and common electrodes. It was because the disclination lines were Provoked by the electric field between pixel electrode and data/gate bus line for active matrix driving. Consequently, the external pressure resulted in dynamic instability of the liquid crystal so that the disclination lines at the data/gate bus line intruded into the active area.

UV 광배향법을 통한 광폴리머와 수직 폴리이미드 혼합 배향막의 수직 배향 특성 연구 (Study of Homeotropic Liquid Crystal Characteristics Using Photo-polymer and Homeotropic Polyimide Blended Alignment Layer via UV Irradiation Method)

  • From UV irradiation, we achieved homeotropic liquid crystal alignment on blended photo-polymer layer which is composed of polyvinyl-cinnamate (PVCi) and homeotropic polyimide (PI). From vertical alignment (VA) mode, we measured threshold voltages by various PVCi doping concentration. Also, the rise time and fall time of VA cells were measured to verify the best doping concentration. Transmittance curves showed about 70% value between 380 nm and 780 nm wavelength which mean visible region.

Electro-optical Properties of Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays Fabricated with TIPS-pentacene Doping

  • This paper introduces 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS pentacene) doped liquid crystal (LC) alignment properties on a rubbed polyimide (PI) layer as a function of the doping concentration of TIPS pentacene. Pretilt angles, photomicrographs, and electro-optical properties of TIPS pentacene doped LCs were comparable to those of pure LCs. However, TIPS pentacene in a LC medium supported twisted nematic-liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to improve electro-optical properties. The threshold voltages observed in the TN cells decreased as the TIPS pentacene concentration increased. In addition, suitable response times were observed in TN cells.

상부종자 용액 성장에 있어 성장결정상 잔류액적의 영향 (Effect of Residual Droplet on the Solution-Grown SiC Single Crystals)

  • The top seeded solution growth (TSSG) method is an alternative technique to grow high-quality SiC crystals that has been actively studied for the last two decades. However, the TSSG method has different issues that need to be resolved when compared to the commercial SiC crystal growing method, i.e., physical vapor transport (PVT). A particular issue of the TSSG method of results from the presence of liquid droplets on the grown crystal that can remain even after crystal growth; this induces residual stress on the crystal surface. Hence, the residual droplet causes several unwanted effects on the crystal such as the initiation of micro-cracks, micro-pipes, and polytype inclusions. Therefore, this study investigated the formation of the residual droplet through multiphysics simulations and lead to the development of a liquid droplet removal method. As a result, we found that although residual liquid droplets significantly apply residual stress on the grown crystal, these could be vaporized by adopting thermal annealing processes after the relevant crystal growing steps.

Viewing Angle Switching using Hybrid Aligned Nematic Liquid Crystal Display Driven by a Fringe-Field

  • Conventional viewing angle switching electrode requires pixel division and additional liquid crystal panel. Hence the conventional viewing angle switching has low aperture ratio and high thickness. In this paper we proposed new viewing angle switching using hybrid aligned nematic mode by fringe-field electrode field (named HAN-FFS) with single liquid crystal panel. The fringe-field switching electrode is located at the bottom, and the additional common electrode is located at the top of the cell to control viewing angle. The proposed device is free from additional liquid crystal panel and pixel division. Consequently, the suggested structure has not only high aperture ratio but also show an excellent potential for viewing angle switching.

X선 산란분석법을 이용한 액정에멀젼 구조분석 (Structure Analysis of Liquid Crystal Emulsions Using X-ray Scattering Analysis)

  • 본 연구에서는 $C_{12-20}$ 알킬글루코사이드, $C_{14-22}$ 알코올 및 베헤닐알코올로 구성된 액정에멀젼을 제조하고 다양한 분석장비를 이용하여 구조분석을 실시하였다. 먼저 제조한 액정에멀젼을 편광현미경과 cryo-SEM을 이용하여 각각 액정에멀젼의 특징인 maltese cross 무늬와 다층 구조를 확인하였다. 또한, DSC를 이용하여 액정상 형성을 확인하였고, small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) 분석을 통하여 약 $305{\AA}$의 층간 간격을 갖는 다층 라멜라 구조를 확인하였다. 한편, wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) 분석을 통해 제조된 액정에멀젼의 라멜라 구조를 이루고 있는 알킬 사슬 간 배열이 사방정계 구조로 되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 액정에멀젼 구조 연구를 통해 얻어진 다양한 물성 정보는 향후 산업적으로 많이 이용될 것으로 기대된다.

새 구조의 액정 엑스선 감지기 (A New X-Ray Image Sensor Utilizing a Liquid Crystal Panel)

  • 새 구조의 액정 엑스선 감지기를 만들었다. 이것은 액정판을 만들고 유리판을 얇게 식각한 다음, 그 유리판 위에 반사막과 광전도층을 연속하여 입힌 구조이다. 새 구조의 액정엑스선 감지기는 공정의 안정성, 대면적화, 감도 등에서 이미 상품화된 엑스선 감지기와도 충분히 경쟁할 수 있으며, 따라서 성공적으로 상용화 할 수 있음을 확인했다.

Qualification of liquid crystal mixtures by bulk-state transient current analysis

  • Transient current (TC) on bulk-state liquid crystal mixtures was measured. We found that TC is very sensitive to impurities and the features of TC curves depend on the type of contamination, from which the quality of materials can be definitely evaluated and the type of impurities can also be revealed.
