  • Multilayer adsorption isotherms of nitrogen and argon on the perovskite-type mixed oxides, synthesized by a citrate coprecipitation method, are determined at the liquid nitrogen temperature using a gravimetric adsorption apparatus. The volume of the adsorbed gas are plotted against the statistical thickness of the adsorbed layer, calculated from several universal adsorption isotherms one after another. The t-method area obtained from this plot is compared with the BET area and finally the appropriateness of universal adsorption isotherms is then discussed on the basis of the plot.

  • In this work, batch adsorption of anionic dye acid green-25 (AG-25) from aqueous solution has been carried out at room temperature using anion exchange membrane (DF-120B) as a noval adsorbent. The effect of various experimental parameters such as contact time, membrane dosage, ionic strength and temperature on the adsorption of dye were investigated. Kinetic models namely pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, liquid film diffusion, Bangham and modified freundlich models were employed to evaluate the experimental data. Parameters like adsorption capacities, rate constant and related correlation coefficients for every model are calculated and discussed. It showed that adsorption of AG-25 onto DF-120B followed pseudo-first-order rate expression. Thermodynamic study indicates that adsorption of AG-25 onto DF-120B is an exothermic and spontaneous process.

  • This study aims to design a monolayer cell adsorption apparatus that would help to produce high-quality slides for Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC) of an early cancer diagnosis for human bodies. The LBC collects exfoliated cells of human bodies and spreads the cells on the slides. Through processes of dyeing and cytological examination, the LBC screens for cancers in early stage. In this study, both of a cell suction module and a cell adsorption module, which are the key elements of the monolayer cell adsorption apparatus, were developed, and using those modules, the study set, first, conditions to help both GYN and NON-GYN apply principal cells without de-endothelialization before conducting its own analysis on the utility. As a results, for GYN, apparatus was determined to be able to produce high-quality slides under the condition of 4 and for NON-GYN, the apparatus would come up with other slides of high-quality under the condition of 2. The study carried out a repetitive test on selected conditions and proved 96% of the repetitive success rate. By the results of what has been learned so far, the study presents that the apparatus has a possibility to replace device from South Korea as one of those other currently-applied systems to run the LBC and that the system will also present a new paradigm for cancer diagnosis as it makes a contribution to the improvement in the LBC.

  • Recently, the results of vital tissue test showed that nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as a disinfection by-product (DBP), could be regarded as a carcinogen because a tumor was observed in organs. U.S.EPA indicated 0.7 ng/L as exposure concentration of NDMA based on a risk assessment target with a lifetime cancer risk of $10^{-6}$. Several recent studies have shown that UV oxidation could remove NDMA. However, UV oxidation is uneconomical and can reform NDMA after treating. In addition, the treatment mechanism of adsorption has not been founddue to the uncertainty of NDMA pathway. In addtion, NDMA has a radioisotope $^{14}C$-labeled which can be analyzed at low concentration of NDMA by Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC). This study has investigated NDMA determination using LSC at an extremely low range from 1 to 100 ng/L and NDMA removal by powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption. For $^{14}C$-NDMA by LSC, the highest correlation over 99% between count number and NDMA concentrationwas obtained with possibility of $^{14}C$-NDMA concentration up to 1 ng/L. In the presence of PAC ranging from 50 to 10,000 mg/L, $^{14}C$-NDMA was removed from 18% to 97% for Sigma-Aldrich corporation (S-A co.) and from 9% to 93% by PAC for Daejung corporation (Dj co.). Hence it was found that the removal efficiency by PAC adsorption could vary depending on PAC types from different companies. For PAC adsorption capacity of $^{14}C$-NDMA using the Freundlich isotherm, $K_f$ and 1/n of PAC from S-A co. were $2.67\times10^{-3}$ ng/mg and 1.009, while those of PAC from Dj co. were $1.30\times10^{-3}$ ng/mg and 0.994, respectively. Thus, PAC from S-A co. showed twice higher adsorption capacity than Dj co.

  • Due to the wide use of feed additives on pig farms, large content of heavy metals and antibiotics have been found in piggery wastes. More than 90 % of piggery wastes were applied to crop field in Korea. The metals and antibiotics originated from piggery waste in the soil may affect plant growth and human health. To examine the adsorption capacity and residual ratio of heavy metals and antibiotics to the soil, a couple of jar test and leaching tests were conducted. While 86.4 % of zinc and 68% of copper applied were adsorbed to soil particles, while over than 60% of antibiotics in pig manure liquid fertilizer were leaked out to effluent.

  • Liquid phase adsorption of organic compounds solution on the activated carbon fiber was measured by chromatographic method in a packed column. Adsorption equilibrium constant Ka of dextrose solution was found to be $72.5cm^3/g$ on ACF without bacteria growth, while in the bacterial ACF packed column Ka was $87.9cm^3/g$. It is suggested that for biological ACF there is a large contribution of bacterial activity to the adsorption equilibrium constant. Axial dispersion coefficient Ez was determined to be in proportional to flow rate and Pe=dpu/Ez independent or existence or bacteria.

  • The two-step surface modifications of activated carbon was carried out to improve the adsorption capacity of toxic heavy metal ions in liquid phase. Physical and chemical properties of the as-received activated carbon (AC) and two kinds of surface-modified activated carbons ($1^{st}AC$ and $2^{nd}AC$) were evaluated through the BET analysis, surface acidity, and oxides measurements. Specific surface area and pore volume did not significantly change, but surface oxide-group remarkably increased by the surface modification. Equilibrium and batch adsorptions of the various metals, such as Pb, Cd, and Cr, using AC, $1^{st}AC$, and $2^{nd}AC$ were performed at initial pH 5. The adsorption capacity and rate of $2^{nd}AC$ were higher than those of AC and $1^{st}AC$. The carboxylic/sodium carboxylate complex groups were developed from the two-step surface modification of activated carbon, which strongly affected the adsorption of metal ions.

  • Crushed peach stone shells were impregnated with $H_3PO_4$ of increasing concentrations (30-70%) followed by heat treatment at 773 K for 3 h. Produced carbons (ACs) were characterized by $N_2$ adsorption at 77 K using the BET-equation and the ${\alpha}$-method. High surface area microporous ACs were obtained, with enhanced internal pore volume, as function of % $H_3PO_4$. Adsorption isotherms from aqueous solution were determined for methylene blue (MB) and p-nitrophenol (PNP), as representatives for dye and phenolics pollutant molecules. Application of the Langmuir model proved the high limiting capacity towards both solute molecules, MB was uptaken in increasing amounts as function of $H_3PO_4$ concentration and generated porosity. High removal of PNP was almost the same irrespective of porosity characteristics. Competitive adsorption of $H_2O$ molecules on the hydrophilic carbon surface seems to partially reduce the available area to the PNP molecules. Application of the pseudo-second order law described well the fast adsorption (${\leq}$ 120 min) at two initial dye concentrations.

  • A porous silica-based adsorbent was prepared by impregnating the pores of a silica support with the extractant 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14) and an additive agent 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (C2mim + NTf-2) as the materials to remove cesium(I) (Cs+) ions from seawater. The as-prepared adsorbent showed excellent adsorption performance toward Cs+ ions, with adsorption equilibrium reached within 2 h and an adsorption amount of 0.196 mmol/g observed. The solution pH, temperature, and the presence of coexisting metal ions were found to have almost no effect on Cs+ adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was considered to proceed via ion exchange between Cs+ and C2mim+. In addition, the particle-induced X-ray emission analysis results further clarified that the adsorbed Cs+ ion species on the adsorbent was in the form of both CsCl and CsBr.

  • This study explores the means by which MX can be effectively extracted from chlorinated water 3-Chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (MX), a potent mutagen commonly found in chlorinated drinking water at concentrations of up to a few hundred ng/L, was quantitatively determined using sample enrichment followed by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), derivatization to methylated form, and analysis with GC-MS. A 4-L water sample was enriched to a concentration of 0.4 L using a vacuum rotary evaporator at 30 ℃. MX in the water was extracted using ethyl acetate (100 mL × 2) as a solvent and MX in the extract was methylated with 10 % H2SO4 in methanol. MX was recovered at a rate of 73.8 %, which was higher than that (38.1 %) for the resin adsorption method. The limit of quantification and repeatability (as relative standard deviation) were estimated to be 10 ng/L and 2.2 %, respectively. This result suggested that LLE can be used for the determination of MX in chlorinated water as an alternative to more time-consuming resin adsorption method.
