When a rigid wedge is indented in to a semi-infinite block, the material is bulged up around the wedge that is generally called lip. The previous works in this filed considered the outer profile of the lip to be linear. But, present authors observed both experimentally and with the aid of finite element analysis that the profile of the lip is not always linear, and it depends on the angle of the wedge and friction parameters. So, in this work, attempts have been made to calculate hardness of indentation for different wedge angles and friction parameters. As hardness is intrinsic property of material, consideration of either linear or parabolic lip will not be affected much. A comparative study of hardness for linear and parabolic free surface profiles of the piled up material around the cone is analyzed in this work.
The choice of parameters from various lip information and the robustness of extracting lip parameters play important roles in the performance of bimodal speech recognition system. In this paper, lip parameters are extracted by using an automatic extraction algorithm and inner lip parameters effect on the recognition rate more than outer lip parameters. Compared with a manual extraction algorithm, the automatic extraction method is evaluated about its robustness.

Using the finite element method, the contact force, contact band width and temperature distribution of lip seals analyzed for the interference including some nonlinearities such as material nonlinearity, geometrical nonlinearity and nonlinear contact boundary condition. The calculated results showed that the contact stress concentrated on the contact zone between the garter spring and the rubber toward the flex side, the contact edge of lip seals. The high contact forces due to the increased interference separate the sealing gap between the lip edge and the rotating shaft. This may lead to leak the sealed oil.
Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) inhibits muscle contraction, which leads to reversible muscle atrophy and paralysis. Therefore, BTX-A injection can be an effective treatment of facial asymmetry that originated from the uncoordinated muscle movement. A 52-year-old patient was referred from another hospital for the correction of post-traumatic sequelae. The patient had prominent scar in the mandibular symphysis area with asymmetric lower lip movement. The reason for this asymmetric lower lip movement was due to damage in the lower lip depressor muscle. After the injection of BTX-A on the lower lip depressors, asymmetric lip movement has been improved.
Purpose: Median cleft of upper lip is defined as any congenital vertical cleft through the midline of the upper lip. It is uncommon, its embryological pathogenesis remains unexplained to date. The authors hereby report a rare case of median cleft of the upper lip associated with enlarged frenulum and palatal mass. This case offers some understanding of the possible embryologic development of this anomaly. Methods: A 10-month-old boy born by normal vaginal delivery at full-term had a notch in the midline of the upper lip with widened philtrum along with enlarged median frenulum, alveolar cleft, and mass of the hard palate. We performed en bloc resection of the enlarged frenulum and palatal mass and cheiloplasty under general anesthesia. Results: Histological examination revealed that the frenulum and palatal mass was consisted of fibrous tissue with normal mucous membrane. The postoperative course was satisfactory. Conclusion: A rare case of median cleft of the upper lip with associated enlarged frenulum and palatal mass was presented with proper surgical management. The surgical technique includes marginal excision of the clefted epithelium and reconstruction of orbicularis oris muscle, in addition to en bloc resection of the palatal mass and frenulotomy.

Synthesizing speech and facial images is necessary for human interface that man and machine converse naturally as human do. The target of this paper is synthesizing the facial images. In synthesis of the facial images a three-dimensional (3-D) shape model of the face is used for realizating the facial expression variations and the lip shape variations. The various facial expressions and lip shapes harmonized with the syllables are synthesized by deforming the three-dimensional model on the basis of the facial muscular actions. Combications with the consonants and the vowels make 14.364 syllables. The vowels dominate most lip shapes but the consonants do a part of them. For determining the lip shapes, this paper investigates all the syllables and classifies the lip shapes pattern according to the vowels and the consonants. As the results, the lip shapes are classified into 8 patterns for the vowels and 2patterns for the consonants. In advance, the paper determines the synthesis rules for the classified lip shape patterns. This method permits us to obtain the natural facial image with the various facial expressions and lip shape patterns.
Background: In cleft lip patients, the necessity of a thorough preoperative analysis of facial deformities before reconstruction is unquestioned. The surgical plan of cleft lip patient is based on the information gained from our preoperative anthropometric evaluation. A variety of commercially available three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging systems are currently introduced to us in plastic surgery for these use. However, few studies have been published on the soft tissue morphology of unrepaired cleft infants described by these 3D surface imaging systems. Methods: The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of facial anthropometric measurements obtained through digital 3D photogrammetry and to compare with direct anthropometry for measurement in unilateral cleft lip patients. We compared our patients with three measurements of dimension made on both sides: heminasal width, labial height, and transverse lip length. Results: The preoperative measurements were not significantly different in both side of labial height and left side of heminasal width. Statistically significant differences were found on both side of transverse lip length and right side of heminasal width. Although the half of preoperative measurements were significantly different, trends of results showed average results were comparable. Conclusion: This is the first study in Korea to simultaneously compare digital 3D photogrammetry with traditional direct anthropometry in unilateral cleft lip patients. We desire this study could contribute the methodological choice of the many researchers for proper surgical planning in cleft lip reconstruction field.

Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital facial malformation and has a significant developmental, physical, and psychological impact on those with the deformity and their families. When treating the patients with unilateral cleft lip, many surgeons adopt the rotation advancement flap method originally developed by Millard, or the triangular flap technique developed by Tennison, Randall or the modifications of these techniques. Among these, Millard's rotation advancement flap method has its advantage in designing the flap using the patient's anatomic landmarks. For performing this rotation advancement technique, skillful operation is needed to obtain esthetically satisfactory results. Vomer flap sometimes is used to repair anterior hard palate in complete cleft lip and palate patients. Vomerine tissue is readily available in the vicinity of the palatal defect and elevation of the vomerine flap is relatively simple procedure. In this article, we will introduce the comprehensive vomer flap technique conjunction with primary lip closure and review the comparative studies of the outcome of simultaneous repair of cleft lip and cleft hard palate with Millard's rotation advancement method and vomer flap.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the correlation of horizontal and sagittal planes used in two-dimensional diagnosis with lip canting by using three-dimensional (3D) analysis. Methods: Fifty-two patients (25 men, 27 women; average age: 24 years) undergoing treatment for dentofacial deformity were enrolled. Computed tomography images were acquired, and digital imaging and communication in medicine files were reconstructed into a 3D virtual model wherein horizontal and sagittal craniofacial planes were measured. Subsequently, the correlations of lip canting with these horizontal and sagittal planes were investigated. Results: The mandibular symmetry plane, the occlusal plane, Camper's plane, the mandibular plane, Broadbent's plane, and the nasal axis plane were correlated with the amount of lip canting (Pearson's correlation coefficients: 0.761, 0.648, 0.556, 0.526, 0.438, and 0.406, respectively). Planes associated with the lower part of the face showed the strongest correlations; the strength of the correlations decreased in the midfacial and cranial regions. None of the planes showed statistically significant differences between patients with clinical lip canting (> 3°) and those without prominent lip canting. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that lip canting is strongly correlated with the mandibular symmetry plane, which includes menton deviation. This finding may have clinical implications with regard to the treatment of patients requiring correction of lip canting. Further studies are necessary for evaluating changes in lip canting after orthognathic surgery.

Purpose : Prediction for soft tissue change after orthognathic surgery is very important for the final esthetics. In this study, we have tried to get the amount of upper lip movement relative to bony segment movement after anterior segmental osteotomy by cephalmetric analysis to predict final upper lip position after surgery. Material and Methods : 20 patients was studied on whom anterior segmental osteotmy as performed by Cupar method during the years 2002 to 2003. Cephalometric radiograph were taken at 1month before surgery and 6 month after surgery. Change of upper lip was measured on landmark Ls and Sto relative to hard tissue (landmark Ia) setback on these X-rays and analyzed. Results : 1. Upper lip setback movement. Setback of upper lip showed proportional relation to the hard tissue setback and the ratio was about 84%(p=0.001). 2. Upper lip downward movement. Downward movement of upper lip showed no proportional relation to hard tissue setback And the amount was mean 1.38 mm and SD 1.21mm (p=0.922). Conclusion : The posterior movement of upper lip is affected by hard tissue movement and shows good proportional change whereas downward movement is not so much influenced by hard tissue movement. And we think slight downward movement shown in this study could be explained by the V-Y closure performed during surgery.
