In ordinary back analysis it if hardly possible to obtain the mechanical properties of tunnel lining by using commonly measured displacements of tunnel lining, because only a few displacements could be measured at the site. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new method which can evaluate the state of stresses of tunnel by using measured data. In this study, in order to assess tunnel lining stability by estimating its stresses with a few measured displacements, a formulation of back analysis method was proposed. The accuracy of results were investigated through the parametric study for several types of measurement model of two dimensional elastic lining. This new back analysis method to assess tunnel lining stresses and strains with a few numbers of measured displacements showed high accuracy and good applicability when compared to the results of numerical experiments by FEM. The method has been tested on subway tunnel and its applicability has been confirmed by comparing field and analytical data. It is verified that the stress on the tunnel lining can be obtained by only more than 3 point of input displacements without any condition of external loads.

In order to determine the optimal number of monitoring points in single-track tunnel lining, this thesis compares and evaluates the results of two cases: when the tunnel lining is modeled into a simple beam form and then is applied to 1) the tunnel lining inverse analysis program, and to 2) the commercially-used program. The displacement and stress of specific tunnel lining cross-sections are determined by entering the load conditions into the commercially-used program for tunnel interpretations. In doing so, two cases were assumed: where a symmetrically-distributed load was acting upon the tunnel lining of a single-track tunnel and where an asymmetrically-distributed load was in action. By comparing the computed displacement with the stress and displacement determined by entering side numbers 3, 5, and 7 into the tunnel lining inverse analysis program, the optimal number of monitoring points is determined. From the results of the research, it can be inferred that the number of monitoring points needs to be at least 5 points, considering the efficiency of monitoring in practice and the loss-and-damage rate of tunnel monitoring.

Prediction of lining loads due to tunnelling is one of the major issues to be addressed in the design of a tunnel. The objective of this study is to investigate rational and realistic design loads on tunnel linings. factors influencing the lining load are summarized and discussed. The instruments for measuring the lining loads are reviewed and discussed because field measurements are often necessary to verify the design methods. Tunnel construction in the City of Edmonton has been very active for storm and sanitary purposes. Since the early 1970's, the city has also been developing an underground Light Rail Transit system. The load measurements obtained from these tunnels are compared with the results from the existing design methods. However, none of the existing methods are totally satisfactory, Therefore, there is some room for improvement in the prediction of lining loads. The convergence-confinement method is reviewed and applied to a case history of a tunnel in Edmonton. The convergence curves are obtained from 2-D finite element analyses using three different material models and theoretical equations. The limitation of the convergence-confinement method is discussed by comparing these curves with the field measurements. Three-dimensional finite element analyses are performed to gain a better understanding of stress and displacement behaviour near the tunnel face. An improved design method is proposed based on the review of existing design methods and the performance of numerical analyses. A specific method or combination of two different methods is suggested for the estimation of lining loads for different conditions of tunnelling. A method to determine the stress reduction factor is described. Typical values of dimensionless load factors nD/H for tunnels in Edmonton are obtained from parametric analyses. Finally, the loads calculated using the proposed method are compared with field measurements collected from various tunnels in terms of soil types and construction methods to verify the method. The proposed method gives a reasonable approximation of the lining loads. The proposed method is recommended as an approximate guideline for the design of tunnels, but the results should be confirmed by field measurements due to the uncertainties of the ground and lining properties and the construction procedures, This is the reason that in-situ monitoring should be an integral part of the design procedure.

The field measurements on the shotcrete lining are usually performed during the tunnel construction. However, the credibility of the measurements is not certain because of the non-stress related strains occurring in the shotcrete, the uncertainty of the deformation modulus of the shotcrete, and the intrinsic difficulties involved in the strain measurements in the shotcrete. The problem related to the field measurements on the shotcrete is investigated using the review of the previous studies and the field measurement performed for this study. A method for the correction of stress measurements at the shotcrete lining, considering the non-stress related strains, is suggested using the literature review and the actual measurements obtained from the non-stress shotcretes. The deformation modulus used for the calculation of the stress acting on the shotcrete is also suggested.

If there are concerns about the stability of segment lining due to section deficiency or large deformation in shield TBM tunnel, reinforcement can be done through ground grouting outside the tunnel or by using steel plate reinforcement, ring beam reinforcement, or inner double layer lining inside the tunnel. Traditional analyses of shield TBM tunnels have been conducted using a continuum method that does not consider the segmented nature of segment lining. This study investigates the reinforcement mechanism for double layer reinforced sections with internal steel linings. By improving the modeling of segment lining, this study applies Break-joint mode (BJM), which considers the segmented characteristics of segment lining, to analyze the deformation characteristics of double layer reinforced sections. The results indicate that the existing concrete segment lining functioned similarly to ground reinforcement around the tunnel, rather than distribution the load. In general, both the BJM model considering the segmentation of segment lining and the continuum rigid method were similar deformation shapes and stress distributions of the lining under load. However, in terms of deformation, when the load strength exceeded the threshold, the deformation patterns of the two models differed.
Estimation of loads on tunnel lining is one of the major issues to be addressed in the design of a tunnel. The existing analytical methods do not consider important details of construction and the variation of geology along the tunnel axis. The measured loads obtained from several sanitary and subway tunnels in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, are compared with the lining loads calculated using the existing analytical methods. However, the existing methods are determined to be not fully satisfactory for the estimation of lining loads. To account for face and heading effects occurring prior to lining installation, the stress reduction factor determined using Eisenstein and Negro's method is used coupled with an analytical solution for calculation of lining loads.

In this research, the cracking of tunnel concrete lining was investigated and analyzed through long-term measurement and nonlinear numerical analysis. For one year after the casting of lining, the stresses and strains were measured by the sensors installed in hard rock tunnel lining. The measurements showed that only small stresses which were less than cracking stress occurred in every survey sections regardless of sensor directions. It could be induced that the external load applied to the lining was small or ignorable. Also, it was carried out short-term numerical analysis based on such site condition as ambient temperature, the- degree of overbreak and mold staying period. Long-term numerical analysis based on creep & shrinkage and nonlinear cracking was carried out. The output showed that construction condition and ambient environments could make the lining concrete crack without external loads. The cracks formed in this process does not indicate the structural instability of the tunnel.

This paper concerns the effect of lining interface adherence on the lining's load carrying capacity. A series of reduced scale laboratory tests and finite element anlayses were carried out with the aim of gaining insight into the effect of shotcrete lining adherence on the load carrying capacity of double shell lining. The results indicated among other things that the load carrying capacity of a double shell tunnel is significantly affected by the adherence between layers. Also revealed was that for cases with low lining layer adherence stress concentration may occur due to relative movement between the lining layers with this trend being more pronounced with increasing tunnel cover depth. Practical implications from the results of this study are discussed in great detail.

Shield TBM tunnel linings are segmented into segments and rings. This study investigates the response characteristics of the stress and displacement of the segment lining under seismic waves through modeling that considers the interface behavior between segments by applying a shell interface element to the contact surface between segments and rings. And there is no management criteria for ovaling deformation of segment linings in Korea. So, this study the ovality criteria and meaning of segment lining. The results of study showed that the distribution patterns of stress and displacement under seismic waves were similar between continuous linings and segment linings. However, the maximum values of stress and displacement showed differences from segment linings. The stress distribution of the continuous lining modeled as a shell type has a stress distribution that has continuity in the 3D cylindrical shape, but the segment lining is concentrated outside the segment, and the largest stress occurs at the location where the contact surface between the segment and the ring is concentrated. This intermittent and localized stress distribution shows an increasing as the ovality of the lining increases at seismic waves. The ovality at which the increase in stress distribution begins to show irregularity and localization is about 150‰. Ovality of 150‰ is an unrealistic value that cannot represent actual lining deformation. Therefore, the ovality of the segment lining increase with depth, but it does not have a significant impact on the stability caused by seismic load.
The reinforced concrete lining of hydraulic pressure tunnels tends to crack under high inner water pressure (IWP), which results in the inner water exosmosis along cracks and involves typical hydro-mechanical interaction. This study aims at the development, validation and application of an indirect-coupled method to simulate the lining cracking process. Based on the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model, the utility routine GETVRM and the user subroutine USDFLD in the finite element code ABAQUS is employed to calculate and adjust the secondary hydraulic conductivity according to the material damage and the plastic volume strain. The friction-contact method (FCM) is introduced to track the lining-rock interface behavior. Compared with the traditional node-shared method (NSM) model, the FCM model is more feasible to simulate the lining cracking process. The number of cracks and the reinforcement stress can be significantly reduced, which matches well with the observed results in engineering practices. Moreover, the damage evolution of reinforced concrete lining can be effectively slowed down. This numerical method provides an insight into the cracking process of reinforced concrete lining in hydraulic pressure tunnels.
