  • The multi-layer neural network that has broadly been utilized in designing the controller of robot manipulator possesses the desirable characteristics of learning capacity, by which the uncertain variation of the dynamic parameters of robot can be handled adaptively, and parallel distributed processing that makes it possible to control on real-time. However the error back propagation algorithm that has been utilized popularly in the learning of the multi-layer neural network has the problem of its slow convergencs speed. In this paper, an approach to improve the convergence speed is proposed using fuzzy logic that can effectively handle the uncertain and fuzzy informations by linguistic level. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulation of PUMA 560 robot manipulator.

  • The limited capacity model has been used to explain linguistic interactions and trade-offs that occur in children's speech. The purpose of the present investigation is to explore the interrelationship of MLU (as an index of syntactic development) and fluency in the spontaneous speech of normal children. Twenty normal children's (ten girls and ten boys, aged 36-48 months) spontaneous speech samples were obtained during free-play interactions with their mothers or other adults. The results indicated that the MLU of disfluent utterances were significantly longer than that of fluent utterances. Also, disfluencies occurred more frequently in longer utterances than in shorter utterances. In addition, the utterances where disfluencies occurred more than 2 times were longer than those where disfluencies occurred once. These results imply that the increase of MLU appear to affect not only the occurrence of disfluent utterances, but also the number of disfluencies within the utterances. In other' words, these findings show that there are trade-off effects between MLU and fluency. This is discussed within a limited capacity framework.

  • This paper reviews various bitstream syntax and parser description (BSPD) languages used in MPEG multimedia standards. Traditionally, the bitstream syntax and semantics have been described in human-readable form. Several languages have been developed to describe the bitstream syntax using a computer-readable language and allow the automatic generation of bitstream parsing function from the description. The languages were designed for different objectives and applications but have a range of commonalities in functionality. The aim of this paper is to provide a historical overview of BSPD languages. The background and target application of the BSPD languages are reviewed. In addition, the technical features of each languages, including the linguistic basis (e.g., XML-based) and parser generation method, are discussed and evaluated. In addition, previous studies based on each language are introduced and categorized according to their objectives. Finally, the relevant technical issues that suggest the direction of the future researches are reported.

  • A number of studies for corporate bond rating classification problems have demonstrated that artificial intelligence approaches such as Case-based reasoning (CBR) can be alternative methodologies to statistical techniques. CBR is a problem solving technique in that the case specific knowledge of past experience is utilized to find a most similar solution to the new problems. To build a successful CBR system to deal with human information processing, the representation of knowledge of each attribute is an important key factor We propose a hybrid approach of using fuzzy sets that describe the approximate phenomena of the real world because it handles inexact knowledge represented by common linguistic terms in a similar way as human reasoning compared to the other existing techniques. Integration of fuzzy sets with CBR is important to develop effective methods for dealing with vague and incomplete knowledge to statistical represent using membership value of fuzzy sets in CBR.

  • Ontology is known to be one of the most important technologies in achieving semantic web. It is critical as it represents the knowledge in a machine readable state. World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has been contributing to the development of ontology for the last several years. However, the recommendation of W3C left out HTML despite the massive amount of information it contains. Also, it is difficult and time consuming to keep up with all the technologies especially in the case of constructing ontology. Thus, we propose a module and methods that reuse HTML documents, extract necessary information from HTML tags and mapping it to OWL 2. We will be combining two kinds of approaches which will be the structural refinement for making an ontology skeleton and linguistic approach for adding detailed information onto the skeleton.

  • From the perspective of cross-cultural communication, it can be easily assumed that non-natives may have great difficulty understanding names of Korean dishes with covert information considering that even understanding those with overt information is a demanding task for them. Complex issues raised by cultural and linguistic differences hinder non-natives from having a clear understanding on names of Korean dishes. In order to resolve this problem, this paper focuses on providing clues to overcoming obstacles of cross-cultural communication in understanding names of Korean dishes by presenting issues including following cases:1. Analysis on types of Korean dish names with covert information in comparison to dish names with overt information. 2. Names of dishes made with a single contain covert information regarding a specific cooking and processing method. 3. A particular aspect regarding Korean food culture is that morphemes with a meaning of meat or flesh('gogi', 'sal', 'yook') contained in dish names indicate covert information that the dish is made of 'beef'.

  • In this paper, we investigate cross-platform interoperability for natural language processing (NLP) and, in particular, annotation of textual resources, with an eye toward identifying the design elements of annotation models and processes that are particularly problematic for, or amenable to, enabling seamless communication across different platforms. The study is conducted in the context of a specific annotation methodology, namely machine-assisted interactive annotation (also known as human-in-the-loop annotation). This methodology requires the ability to freely combine resources from different document repositories, access a wide array of NLP tools that automatically annotate corpora for various linguistic phenomena, and use a sophisticated annotation editor that enables interactive manual annotation coupled with on-the-fly machine learning. We consider three independently developed platforms, each of which utilizes a different model for representing annotations over text, and each of which performs a different role in the process.

  • In the fuzzy control of shop the qualitative knowledge and information that the ship's operators have acquired through their experience can be logically described by the Linguistic control Rule (LCR). The algorithm of the control is made of the LCR and the control of the shop is performed by processing this algorithm implementing a computer. The problem in the fuzzy control is that it is very difficult to describe qualitative human knowledge in the LCR correctly. To tackle this difficulty a Fuzzy Neural Network (FNN) was introduced in this paper. The characteristics of the multi-layer FNN control system applied to the ship's steering system is investigated through the computer simulation, and the results were compared with those of the ordinary fuzzy control system of a ship. The results showed that the FNN method is a very effective to translate human knowledge into the LCR.

  • The iconic language interlace is designed to provide more convenient environments for communication to the target system than the keyboard-based interface. For this work, tendencies and features of vocabulary are analyzed in conversation corpora constructed from the corresponding domains with high degree of utilization, and the meaning and vocabulary system of iconic language are constructed through application of natural language processing methodologies such as morphological, syntactic and semantic analyses. The part of speech and grammatical rules of iconic language are defined in order to make the situation corresponding the icon to the vocabulary and meaning of the Korean language and to communicate through icon sequence. For linguistic ambiguity resolution which may occur in the iconic language and for effective semantic processing, semantic data focused on situation of the iconic language are constructed from the general purpose Korean semantic dictionary and subcategorization dictionary. Based on them, the Korean language generation from the iconic interface in semantic domain is suggested.
