  • This paper describes the synthesis of robust decentralized controllers for uncertain large-scale discrete-time systems with time-delays in subsystem interconnections. Based on the Lyapunov method, a sufficient condition for robust stability, is derived in terms of a linear matrix inequality(LMI). The solutions of the LMI can be easily obtained using various efficient convex optimization techniques. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed method.

  • It has been shown that the distribution of relaxation times, H(ln $\tau$), in semi-logarithmic time scale can easily be calculated numerically from the derivative of the relaxation function in semilogarithmic scale. In that, ln$\tau$, the abscissa, is divided into N different segments of equal size, then H is considered to be a linear function of ln $\tau$within each segment. The technique has been applied to a Williams-Watts function as well as to the relaxation function obtained by photon correlation spectroscopy from atactic polystyrene glass. It has been demonstrated that the relaxation functions can be precisely reproduced from the calculated distribution functions.

  • We report a small-scale EUV bright loop associated with the evolution of the fine-scale magnetic discontinuity in the photosphere. Our analysis was carried out by using the high spatial resolution data taken with InfraRed Imaging Magnetograph (IRIM) and the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS). As a result, an extremely narrow dark lane of the intense horizontal magnetic field (width ~ 300 km) is detected parallel to the boundary of the magnetic pore, which is one of the footpoints of the small-scale bright coronal loop. We find that the variation of the net linear polarization inside the dark lane is closely related to the intensity variations of the coronal loop. Based on our results, we suggest that small-scale atmospheric heating such as bright coronal loop seen above the complex pore group may be strongly affected by the evolution of the fine-scale magnetic discontinuity in the photosphere. This is a nice example of solar atmospheric heatings associated with the fine-scale magnetic discontinuity in the photosphere.

  • The oxidation behavior of commercial pure titanium is investigated in the temperature range of $727^{\circ}C{\sim}950^{\circ}C$ in mixed gases. The weight change is measured by TGA during oxidation in mixed gases. The oxidation behavior indicated by weight gain or the growth of oxide layer is based on the linear rate law at high temperatures. The structure of the oxide scale formed during oxidation is analysed by optical microscopy, electron probe microanalyzer, scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction. Oxide scales have a $TiO_2$ structure, and are constituted with multi-layered or two layered porous external one and a dense internal one. Ti-O solid solution region is formed at the interface of metal and scale layer. The formation of oxide scale is influenced by the oxidation temperature, time, crystal structure and the condition of atmosphere.

  • There have been considerable researches for solving large-scale separable convex optimization ptoblems. In this paper we present a method for large-scale nonseparable smooth convex optimization problems with block-angular linear constraints. One of them is occurred in reconfiguration of the virtual path network which finds the routing path and assigns the bandwidth of the path for each traffic class in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network [1]. The solution is approximated by solving a sequence of the block-angular structured separable quadratic programming problems. Bundle-based decomposition method [10, 11, 12]is applied to each large-scale separable quadratic programming problem. We implement the method and present some computational experiences.

  • We consider a problem of estimating the economics of scale for the natural gas industries. The goal programming/constrained regression is employed for estimating the economics of scale for the natural gas industry, and the problem is formulated as a linear programing problem. Also the translog cost function is used to represent the cost structure for the natural gas industry. The Korean Gas Corporation was selected as a case study, and we demonstrate that the suggested goal programming/constrained regression approach is appropriate for estimating the economies of scale for the Korean nature gas industry.

  • Three full-scale instrumented test slabs were constructed and tested using a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) to evaluate the structural behavior of internally cured concrete (ICC) for use in pavements under Florida condition. Three mix designs selected from a previous laboratory testing program include the standard mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio, the ICC with 0.32 water-cement ratio, and the ICC mixture with 0.40 water-cement ratio. Concrete samples were prepared and laboratory tests were performed to measure strength, elastic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion and shrinkage properties. The environmental responses were measured using strain gages, thermocouples, and linear variable differential transformers instrumented in full-scale concrete slabs. A 3-D finite element model was developed and calibrated using strain data measured from the full-scale tests using the HVS. The results indicate that the ICC slabs were less susceptible to the change of environmental conditions and appear to have better potential performance based on the critical stress analysis.

  • Closed-loop fiber-optic gyroscope with linear scale factor for a wide dynamic range is demonstrated using a gating process and two-harmonic phase modulation, of which the second harmonic is obtained by a frequency doubler. Also the effects of the second harmonic and duty cycle of gating signal on the linearity of scale factor are estimated theoretically and compared with the measured data. The experimental results show the best linearity of scale factor is about 0.5% within the rotation rate 90.deg./sec. The closed-loop fiber-optic gyroscope with gated two-harmonic phase modulation can be used in the application demanding less sensitive performance and modest scale factor linearity.

  • High performance direct-iterative hybrid linear solver for large scale finite element problem is developed. Direct solution method is robust but difficult to parallelize, whereas iterative solution method is opposite for direct method. Therefore, combining two solution methods is desired to get both high performance parallel efficiency and numerical robustness for large scale structural analysis problems. Hybrid method mentioned in this paper is based on FETI-DP (Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting-Dual Primal method) which has good parallel scalability and efficiency. It is suitable for fourth and second order finite element elliptic problems including structural analysis problems. We are using the hybrid concept of theses two solution method categories, combining the multifrontal solver into FETI-DP based iterative solver. Hybrid solver is implemented for our general structural analysis code, IPSAP.
