This study was aimed at analyzing the three-step seismic performance evaluation procedure of Korea Infrastructure Safety Cooperation and proposing a new procedure suitable for unreinforced masonry buildings in Korea. For the study, it was investigated the performance evaluation results of five example URM buildings. First of all, it was found that the performance evaluation procedure for the URM buildings should be different from that for the other structural systems. As a result, a simple procedure of seismic performance evaluation was proposed, which includes elimination of elastic and inelastic push-over analysis and reduction of performance levels and evaluation steps. With the simple procedure, the URM buildings could be evaluated more easily than the other structures. It would be expected that the procedure can provide structural engineers with a simple and easy way to evaluate the seismic performance of the Korean URM buildings. Nevertheless, the procedure must be revised continuously by reflecting new research products for the URM buildings in Korea.

e-insensitive support vector regression(e-SVR) is capable of providing more complete description of the linear and nonlinear relationships among random variables. In this paper we propose an iterative reweighted least squares(IRWLS) procedure to solve the quadratic problem of e-SVR with a modified loss function. Furthermore, we introduce the generalized approximate cross validation function to select the hyperparameters which affect the performance of e-SVR. Experimental results are then presented which illustrate the performance of the IRWLS procedure for e-SVR.

In recent decades, it has been realized that increasing the lateral stiffness of structure subjected to lateral loads is not the only parameter enhancing safety or reducing damage. Factors such as ductility and damping govern the structural response due to lateral loads. Despite the significant contribution of damping in resisting lateral loads, especially at resonance, there is no accurate mathematical representation for it. The main objective of this study is to develop a damping identification procedure for linear systems based on a mixed numerical-experimental approach, assuming viscous damping. The proposed procedure has been applied to a laboratory experiment associated with a numerical model, where a hollow rectangular steel cantilever column, having three lumped masses, has been fixed on a shaking table subjected to different exciting waves. The modal damping ratio has been identified; in addition, the effect of adding filling material to the hollow specimen has been studied in relation to damping enhancement. The results have revealed that the numerically computed response based on the identified damping is in a good fitting with the measured response. Moreover, the filling material has a significant effect in increasing the modal damping.

A computational procedure to estimate the noise radiated from a discharge valve system in a linear compressor was discussed and established. This procedure was composed of three steps. As the first step, the dynamic behavior of the valve system was estimated taking into consideration of fluid-valve-piston interactions. As the second step, the flow characteristics of refrigerant in the discharge valve system were estimated through computational fluid dynamics applying the behaviors of the valves as moving boundary conditions. The variations of pressures and velocities of fluid were converted to quadrupole noise sources. As the final step, the boundary element method based on Helmholtz equation was applied to predict the radiated acoustic pressure. The computational results by the presented procedure were experimentally validated.

In this paper we consider the problem of identifying and testing the outliers in linear regression. first we consider the problem for testing the null hypothesis of no outliers. The test based on the ratio of two scale estimates is proposed. We show the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic by Monte Carlo simulation and investigate its properties. Next we consider the problem of identifying the outliers. A forward sequential procedure based on the suggested test is proposed and shown to perform fairly well. The forward sequential procedure is unaffected by masking and swamping effects because the test statistic is based on robust estimate.
In this work we propose a novel procedure for direct computation of buckling loads for extreme mechanical or thermomechanical conditions. The procedure efficiency is built upon the von Karmann strain measure providing the special format of the tangent stiffness matrix, leading to a general linear eigenvalue problem for critical load multiplier estimates. The proposal is illustrated on a number of validation examples, along with more complex examples of interest for practical applications. The comparison is also made against a more complex computational procedure based upon the finite strain elasticity, as well as against a more refined model using the frame elements. All these results confirm a very satisfying performance of the proposed methodology.

Most structures are expected deform nonlinear and inelastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. Nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) is the most rigorous procedure to compute seismic performance in the various inelastic analysis methods. But nonlinear analysis procedures necessitate more reliable and practical tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method. This method is the concept of an equivalent linear system, wherein a linear system having reduced stiffness and increased damping is used to estimate the response of the nonlinear system. This procedure are conceptually simple, but the iterative procedure is time-consuming and may sometimes lead to no solution or multiple solutions. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for mixed building structure.

The vector sum excited linear prediction(VSELP) coding gives high quality of synthetic speech at bit rates as low as 4.8kbps, but its computational complexity is prohibitive for real time applications. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the computations of the VSELP codebook search procedure. The proposed method reduces the search space efficiently, before applying every linear combination of the basis vectors to the codebook search procedure. It decides whether is can fix the combination coefficient of each basis vector using heuristics so that the number of combinations decreases. It has been shown that the proposed method retains good quality of synthetic speech and reduces the computations of codebook search procedure by more than 40% of the origin.
An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear structural systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a harmonic balance procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. A complex nonlinear system is divided into substructures, of which equations are approximately transformed to modal coordinates including nonlinear term under the reasonable procedure. Then, the equations are synthesized into the overall system and the nonlinear solution for the system is obtained. Based on the harmonic balance method, the proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in the solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated using the study of the nonlinear rotating machine system as a large mechanical structure system. Results obtained are reported to be an efficient approach with respect to nonlinear response prediction when compared with other conventional methods.

The variable transformations are useful ways to guarantee the functional relationships in the model. However, the presence of outliers may undermine the accuracy of transformation. This paper deals with response transformations in the partial linear models under the existence of outliers. A new procedure for response transformation and outliers detection is proposed. The procedure uses a sequential method for identifying outliers and dynamic graphical methods for an appropriate transformation. The graphical tools make it possible to catch diagnostic information by monitoring the movement of points in the data. The procedure is illustrated with several examples. Examples show that visual clues regarding the optimal transformation, the fittness of the model and the outlyness of the observations can be checked from the series of plots.
