In order to predict the motions of a planing hull in waves, it is necessary to accurately estimate the force components acting on the hull such as the hydrodynamic force, buoyancy, and friction, as well as the wave exciting force. In particular, based on strip theory, hydrodynamic forces can be estimated by the summation of the forces acting on each cross-section of the hull. A non-linear strip method for planing hulls was mathematically developed by Zarnick, and his formula has been used to predict the vertical motions of prismatic planing hulls in regular waves. In this study, several improvements were added to Zarnick's formula to predict the vertical motions of warped planing hulls. Based on calm water model test results, the buoyancy force and moment correction coefficients were modified. Further improvements were made in the pile-up correction. Pile-up correction factors were changed according to variations of the deadrise angles using the results found in previous research. Using the same hull form, captive model tests were carried out in other recent research, and the results were compared with the present calculation results. The comparison showed reasonably good agreements between the model tests and present calculations.
The main objective of this study is to investigate the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of the well-known naval surface combatant DTMB (David Taylor Model Basin) 5415 hull with URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of static drift tests have been performed by a commercial RANS solver based on a finite volume method (FVM) in an unsteady manner. The fluid flow is considered as 3-D, incompressible and fully turbulent. Hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out for a fixed Froude number 0.28. During the analyses, the free surface effects have been taken into account using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method and the hull is considered as fixed. First, the code has been validated with the available experimental data in literature. After validation, static drift, static rudder and drift and rudder tests have been simulated. The forces and moments acting on the hull have been computed with URANS approach. Numerical results have been applied to determine the hydrodynamic maneuvering coefficients, such as, velocity terms and rudder terms. The acceleration, angular velocity and cross-coupled terms have been taken from the available experimental data. A computer program has been developed to apply a fast maneuvering simulation technique. Abkowitz's non-linear mathematical model has been used to calculate the forces and moment acting on the hull during the maneuvering motion. Euler method on the other hand has been applied to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Turning and zig-zag maneuvering simulations have been carried out and the maneuvering characteristics have been determined and the numerical simulation results have been compared with the available data in literature. In addition, viscous effects have been investigated using Eulerian approach for several static drift cases.
This paper presents a novel approach to the design of an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller for depth control of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). So far, AUV's dynamics are highly nonlinear and the hydrodynamic coefficients of the vehicles are difficult to estimate, because of the variations of these coefficients with different operating conditions. These kinds of difficulties cause modeling inaccuracies of AUV's dynamics. Hence, we propose an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control with novel fuzzy adaptation technique for regulating vertical positioning in presence of parametric uncertainty and disturbances. In this approach, two fuzzy approximator are employed in such a way that slope of the linear sliding surface is updated by first fuzzy approximator, to shape tracking error dynamics in the sliding regime, while second fuzzy approximator change the supports of the output fuzzy membership function in the defuzzification inference module of fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) algorithm. Simulation results shows that, the reaching time and tracking error in the approaching phase can be significantly reduced with chattering problem can also be eliminated. The effectiveness of proposed control strategy and its advantages are indicated in comparison with conventional sliding mode control FSMC technique.
The SWATH concept hull form which is capable of high speed navigation with small oscillatory motions in waves, was developed from the catamaran type hull forms. This paper describes how the motion of a SWATH ship in irregular waves can be reduced by regulating the stabilizing fins. The optimal regulator and LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) controller for vertical plane motion have been applied for both platforming mode and contouring mode controls. The calculations of hydrodynamic coefficients and external forces are possible for defining the system equation for the design purpose of motion control. Performances of the controlled system are compared with those of original system.
In this paper, the localized finite element method(LFEM) is applied to 3-dimensional ship motion problems in water of infinite depth. The LFEM used here is based on the functional constructed by Bai & Yeung(1974). To test the present numerical scheme, a few vertical axisymmetric bodies are treated by general 3-dimensional formulation. The computed results of hydrodynamic coefficients for a few vertical spheroids and vertical circular cylinders show good agreement with results obtained by others. The advantages of the present numerical method compared with the method of integral equation are as follows; (i) The cumbersome existence of irregular frequencies in the method of conventional integral equation is removed. (ii) The final matrix is banded and symmetric and the computation of the matrix elements is comparatively easier, whereas the size of the matrix in the present scheme is much larger. (iii) In the future research, it is possible to accommodate with the nonlinear exact free surface boundary condition in the localized finite element subdomain, whereas the linear solution is assumed in the truncated(far field) subdomain.
In this paper, robust depth and course controllers of AUV(autonomous underwater vehicles) using LMI-based H$_{\infty}$ servo control are proposed. The $H_{\infty}$ servo problem is modified to an $H_{\infty}$ control problem for the generalized plant that includes a reference input mode, and then a sub-optimal solution that satisfies a given performance criteria is calculated by LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality) approach. The robust depth and course controllers are designed to be satisfied the robust stability about the modeling error generated from the perturbation of the hydrodynamic coefficients and the robust tracking property under sea wave and tide disturbances. The performances of the designed controllers are evaluated by computer simulations, and these simulation results show the applicability of the proposed robust depth and course controller.
This paper presents a stable nonlinear adaptive control for AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) by using neural network. AUV's dynamics are highly nonlinear, and their hydrodynamic coefficients vary with different operational conditions. In this paper, the nonlinear uncertainties of the AUV's dynamics are approximated by using LPNN(Linearly parameterized Neural Network). The presented controller is consist of three parallel terms; linear feedback control, sliding mode control, and adaptive control(LPNN). Lyapunov theory is used to guarantee the stability of tracking errors and neural network´s weights errors. Numerical simulations for nonlinear control of the AUV show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.
The wave interaction with flexible membrane such as PVC and fabrics is studied to prove its applicability to portable breakwaters. To obtain the wave exciting force acting on flexible membrane, eigen-function expansion method is employed. The effect of flexible is involved in body boundary condition in which x-directional displacement of membrane is obtained by solving the linear membrane equation. Displacement of membrane is assumed to be small compared to wavelength, therefore the tensile force of membrane remains constant. As the numerical examples, transmission and reflection coefficients according to the change of tensile forces are investigated. The hydrodynamic force on membrane, the dynamic tension in the mooring lines and the vertical displacement profile of membrane are also calculated. It is suggested that the flexible membrane can be used to engineering material for the future coastal/ocean applications.

Underwater robotic vehicles (URVs) have been an important tool for various underwater tasks because they have greater speed, endurance, depth capability, and safety than human divers. As the use of such vehicles increases, the vehicle control system becomes one of the most critical subsytems to increase autonomy of the vehicle. The vehicle dynamics are nonlinear and their hydrodynamic coefficients are often difficult to estimate accurately. In this paper a new type of fuzzy model-based controller based on Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy model is designed and applied to the control of of an underwater robotic vehicle. The proposed fuzzy controller : 1) is a nonlinear controller, but a linear state feedback controller in the consequent of each local fuzzy control rule ; 2) can guarantee the stability of the closed-loop fuzzy system ; 3) is relatively easy to implement. Its good performance as well as its robustness to the change of parameters have been shown and compared with the re ults of conventional linear controller by simulation.
