  • The main purpose of our study is to propose a new methodology to develop the multi-parametric measure including linear and nonlinear measures of heart rate variability diagnosing cardiovascular disease. We recorded electrocardiogram for three recumbent postures; the supine, left lateral, and right lateral postures. Twenty control subjects (age: $56.70{\pm}9.23$ years), 51 patients with angina pectoris (age: $59.98{\pm}8.41$ years) and 13 patients with acute coronary syndrome (age: $59.08{\pm}9.86$ years) participated in this study. To develop the multi-parametric measure of HRV, we used the multiple discriminant analysis method among statistical techniques. As a result, the multiple discriminant analysis gave 75.0% of goodness of fit. When the linear and nonlinear measures of HRV are individually used as a clinical tool to diagnose cardiac autonomic function, there is quite a possibility that the wrong results will be obtained due to each measure has different characteristics. Although our study is a preliminary one, we suggest that the multi-parametric measure, which takes into consideration the whole possible linear and nonlinear measures of HRV, may be helpful to diagnose the cardiovascular disease as a diagnostic supplementary tool.

  • In this paper, we propose a fuzzy combined Polynomial Neural Network(PNN) for pattern classification. The fuzzy combined PNN comes from the generic TSK fuzzy model with several linear polynomial as the consequent part and is the expanded version of the fuzzy model. The proposed pattern classifier has the polynomial neural networks as the consequent part, instead of the general linear polynomial. PNNs are implemented by stacking the simple polynomials dynamically. To implement one layer of PNNs, the various types of simple polynomials are used so that PNNs have flexibility and versatility. Although the structural complexity of the implemented PNNs is high, the PNNs become a high order-multi input polynomial finally. To estimate the coefficients of a polynomial neuron, The weighted linear discriminant analysis. The output of fuzzy rule system with PNNs as the consequent part is the linear combination of the output of several PNNs. To evaluate the classification ability of the proposed pattern classifier, we make some experiments with several machine learning data sets.

  • Computing music similarity is an indispensable component in developing music search service. This paper focuses on learning a music similarity function in order to boost cover song identification performance. By using the probabilistic linear discriminant analysis, we construct a latent music space where the distances between cover song pairs reduces while the distances between the non-cover song pairs increases. We derive a music similarity function by testing hypothesis, whether two songs share the same latent variable or not, using the probabilistic models with the assumption that observed music features are generated from the learned latent music space. Experimental results performed on two cover music datasets show that the proposed music similarity improves the cover song identification performance.

  • Face recognition is a science of automatically identifying individuals based their unique facial features. In order to avoid overfitting and reduce the computational reduce the computational burden, a new face recognition algorithm using PCA-fisher linear discriminant (PCA-FLD) and fuzzy radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is proposed in this paper. First, face features are extracted by the principal component analysis (PCA) method. Then, the extracted features are further processed by the Fisher's linear discriminant technique to acquire lower-dimensional discriminant patterns, the processed features will be considered as the input of the fuzzy RBFNN. As a widely applied algorithm in fuzzy RBF neural network, BP learning algorithm has the low rate of convergence, therefore, an improved learning algorithm based on Levenberg-Marquart (L-M) for fuzzy RBF neural network is introduced in this paper, which combined the Gradient Descent algorithm with the Gauss-Newton algorithm. Experimental results on the ORL face database demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has satisfactory performance and high recognition rate.

  • This paper discusses low resolution face recognition using the photon-counting linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The photon-counting LDA asymptotically realizes the Fisher criterion without dimensionality reduction since it does not suffer from the singularity problem of the fisher LDA. The linear discriminant function for optimal projection is determined in high dimensional space to classify unknown objects, thus, it is more efficient in dealing with low resolution facial images as well as conventional face distortions. The simulation results show that the proposed method is superior to Eigen face and Fisher face in terms of the accuracy and false alarm rates.

  • To determine whether pattern recognition based on metabolite fingerprinting for whole cell extracts can be used to discriminate cultivars metabolically, leaves and fruits of five commercial strawberry cultivars were subjected to Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. FT-IR spectral data from leaves were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA) and Fisher's linear discriminant function analysis. The dendrogram based on hierarchical clustering analysis of these spectral data separated the five commercial cultivars into two major groups with originality. The first group consisted of Korean cultivars including 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang', and 'Gumhyang', whereas in the second group, 'Ryukbo' clustered with 'Janghee', both Japanese cultivars. The results from analysis of fruits were the same as of leaves. We therefore conclude that the hierarchical dendrogram based on PCA of FT-IR data from leaves represents the most probable chemotaxonomical relationship between cultivars, enabling discrimination of cultivars in a rapid and simple manner.

  • This study conducted a step-wise discriminant analysis to determine which variables play key roles in distinguishing among 3 mutually exclusive delinquent groups - disclosed delinquency group, closed delinquency group, and no delinquency group - and to 'develop a procedure for predicting group membership for new cases whose group membership is undetermined. Variables included in this study were collected by the review of previous empirical studies, which were identified as related to juvenile delinquency. The variables can be classified as character-related variables, family-related variables, school-related variables, peer-related variables, and socioeconomic variables. A sample of 693 youths were employed to conduct the statistical analysis. Out of 35 possible predictors of juvenile delinquency 14 variables were included in the pool of predicting variables. This study used a hold-out sample (n=300) to test if the linear discriminant function classify cases correctly into one of 3 groups. The percentage of cases classified correctly by the discriminant function was turned out to be acceptable in the area of social sciences. Discussions and suggestions were provided in terms of prevention and intervention for juvenile delinquency with focus on the 14 predictor variables.

  • In general, it may be advantageous to measure the pressure pulsation near a valve to detect a valve defect in a linear compressor. However, the acceleration signals are more advantageous for rapid classification in a mass-production line. This paper deals with the performance improvement of fault classification using only the compressor-shell acceleration signal based on the relation between the refrigerant pressure pulsation and the shell acceleration of the compressor. A transfer function was estimated experimentally to take into account the signal noise ratio between the pressure pulsation of the refrigerant in the suction pipe and the shell acceleration. The shell acceleration signal of the compressor was modified using this transfer function to improve the defect classification performance. The defect classification of the modified signal was evaluated in the acceleration signal in the frequency domain using Fisher's discriminant ratio (FDR). The defect classification method was validated by experimental data. By using the method presented, the classification of valve defects can be performed rapidly and efficiently during mass production.

  • The objective of this paper is to construct a model to be used in deciding whether to repair or rebuild school buildings is depending on their ages and other factors. The theme of this paper is the age is the main variable but other factors such as floor, innerwall, ceiling, door, inner window of the class room, outer window of the class room, inner window of the corridor, outer window of the corridor, middle window between the classroom and the corridor, light, heater, speaker, fire protection sensor, TV monitor, and telephone status would influence the final decisions. This paper employs an experimental case study method. Using the stepwise, statistical, classification method commonly used in discriminant analysis, it evaluates 12,766 rooms of 87 different high schools in Seoul. The result of this study indicates that some critical variables influencing the final decisions are the status of TV monitor, middle window between the classroom and the corridor, light, inner window of the corridor, fire protection sensor, innerwall, speaker utensil, outer window of the class room, and door of the class room. This paper also suggests a linear discriminant function will be used for this kind of studies. Finally the paper recommends policies with respect to the variables and discriminant functions evaluated.

  • In this study, the Polynomial-based Radial Basis Function Neural Networks is proposed as an one of the recognition part of overall face recognition system that consists of two parts such as the preprocessing part and recognition part. The design methodology and procedure of the proposed pRBFNNs are presented to obtain the solution to high-dimensional pattern recognition problems. In data preprocessing part, Principal Component Analysis(PCA) which is generally used in face recognition, which is useful to express some classes using reduction, since it is effective to maintain the rate of recognition and to reduce the amount of data at the same time. However, because of there of the whole face image, it can not guarantee the detection rate about the change of viewpoint and whole image. Thus, to compensate for the defects, Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA) is used to enhance the separation of different classes. In this paper, we combine the PCA&LDA algorithm and design the optimized pRBFNNs for recognition module. The proposed pRBFNNs architecture consists of three functional modules such as the condition part, the conclusion part, and the inference part as fuzzy rules formed in 'If-then' format. In the condition part of fuzzy rules, input space is partitioned with Fuzzy C-Means clustering. In the conclusion part of rules, the connection weight of pRBFNNs is represented as two kinds of polynomials such as constant, and linear. The coefficients of connection weight identified with back-propagation using gradient descent method. The output of the pRBFNNs model is obtained by fuzzy inference method in the inference part of fuzzy rules. The essential design parameters (including learning rate, momentum coefficient and fuzzification coefficient) of the networks are optimized by means of Differential Evolution. The proposed pRBFNNs are applied to face image(ex Yale, AT&T) datasets and then demonstrated from the viewpoint of the output performance and recognition rate.
