In this paper, we propose target range estimation method using ghost target in the submarine linear array sonar. Usually, when submarine detect target, they use passive sonar detection to avoid self-disclosure by active sonar transmission. But, originally, passive linear array sonar have limitation for target range estimation and additional processing is required to get target range information. For the case of near-field target, typical range estimation method is using multiple information by multipath effect in underwater environment. Acoustic signal generated from target are propagated along with numerous multipath in underwater environment. Since multipath target signals received in the linear array sonar have different conic angles each other, ghost target is appeared at the bearing different with real target bearing and sonar operator can find these information on the operation console. Under several assumption, this geometric properties can be analysed mathematically and we get the target range by derivation of this geometric equations using measured conic angles of real target and ghost target.
Ryu et al. proposed a multiple target angle-tracking algorithm with efficient equation for angular innovation, and Ryu's algorithm has good feature that it has no data association problem. Ryu's algorithm is only applicable to linear sensor array, because its efficient equation for angular innovation is derived in case of using a linear sensor array. In a many fields studying multiple target angle-tracking, the various shapes of sensor array are used. In sonar, a cylindrical sensor array is as much used as a linear sensor array, a example is hull mounted sonar. In this paper, Ryu's algorithm is modified to be applicable to cylindrical sensor array, and the tracking performance of a modified algorithm is verified by various computer simulations.
In this paper, the error tolerance of each array element to ensure a given specified error level for the array pattern is analyzed using the Genetic Algorithm. In the conventional deterministic method for synthesis of sonar way problems the computational resource required in the simulation grows rapidly as the number of way elements increases. To alleviate this numerical inefficiency, the Monte-Carlo method may be considered as an alternative technique for array syntheses. However, it is difficult to apply the method to the synthesis of array patterns because of its relatively lower accuracy in spite of moderate computational complexity. A new analysis method for estimating error tolerances in sonar arrays is Proposed since the Genetic Algorithm has significant promise to efficiently solve way synthesis problems. Through several numerical tests in linear and planar arrays, it is demonstrated that the proposed method can provide accurate results for error tolerances of sonar arrays.
Synthetic Aperture Sonar is a technique of extending Physically limited length of an array by signal processing to enhance bearing resolution of a system. The previous techniques estimate most or away shapes as linear. so when towed array shapes are distorted. this can create a deviation from actual situation. In this paper. we estimated perturbed away shapes. and compensated distortion by using estimated array shapes and synthesized arrays in aperture domain. As experimental data, we used the one obtained from towed array in neighboring waters of the Korean peninsula. We extended array by compensating differences in time and spatial position between overlapped subarrays by using SAS techniques. In simulation results. we confirmed that the bearing resolution was enhanced.
The previous synthetic aperture techniques have been investigated to increase signal gain, improve angular resolution and peak-to-sidelobe level ratios for towed line array sonar systems. The synthetic aperture method in this paper is performed for conformal array systems by mapping real elements on an axis to control like a linear array. The proposed method for the conformal array performs coherent processing of subaperture signals at successive time intervals in the beam domain via FFT transformations. This was confirmed by the simulation results and compared to the results from use of the synthetic aperture technique under the conformal array.
Passive sonar system forms the various beams in any desired directions to obtain the improvement in Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio, bearing detection and localization of targets, and the attenuation of interferences from other directions. The improvement of beamforming is very important to detect modern underwater targets as noise reduction technology leads to considerably low-level acoustic emissions in the long range in complex environmental sea. In this paper, we proposed the spatial cross correlation beamforming (SCCBF) algorithm using cross correlation matrix of individual hydrophone pairs of linear array sensors. By the theoretical analysis and simulation, the proposed SCCBF is demonstrated that its performances compared to conventional beamforming (CBF) output can be obtain above 3dB of array gain and about half of beam width represented the bearing accuracy in target detection. Also, this paper presents sea test result of linear passive sonar system that the proposed algorithm implemented.

Passive sonar system forms the various beams in any desired directions to obtain the improvement in Signal-to-Noise(S/N) ratio, bearing detection and localization of targets, and the attenuation of interferences from other directions. Detection of modern underwater targets is becoming increasingly difficult as noise reduction technology leads to considerably low-level acoustic emissions. Therefore, the improvement of beamforming is very important to detect modern underwater targets at the long range in the complex environmental sea. Also, to react to the fast attack mobiles such as torpedoes, port and starboard discrimination is required to be performed very quickly. In this paper, we proposed the implementation of omnidirectional target bearing detector without port and starboard ambiguity to detect effectively the low-level underwater targets. The port and starboard discrimination is performed by cardioid processing and the improvement of beamforming utilizes the cross correlation matrix of individual hydrophone pairs of linear array sensors. The sea test result shows that the system implemented is good for the detection of the low-level underwater targets.

Various techniques for optimizing the performance indices of sonar arrays have been discussed, Maximizing the directivity or beamforming technique with constraints have been studied, however these performances are adapted on the condition of isotropic linear array. In this paper we discuss the problems resulting from application of conformal array by using previous techniques. Finally, we could get a desired beam pattern after use of the compensated weight vector to solve the problems.
This paper proposes the Focused beamforming to estimate the location of target residing near to the observation platform in the underwater environment. The Focused beamforming technique provides the location of target by the coherent summation of a series of incident spherical waveforms considering distinct propagation delay times at the sensor array. But due to the movement of the observation platform and the variation of the underwater environment, the shape of the sensor array is no longer to be linear but it becomes distorted as the platform moves. Thus the Focused beamforming should be peformed regarding to the geometric shape variation at each time. To estimate the target location, the artificial image plane comprised of cells is constructed, and the delays are calculated from each cell where the target could be proximity to sensors for the coherent summation. After the coherent combining, the beam pattern can be obtained through the Focused beamforming on the image plane. Futhermore to compensate the variation of the shape of the sensor array, the paper utilizes the Nth-order polynomial approximation to estimate the shape of the sensor array obeying the water pulley modeling. Simulation results show the performance of the Focused beamforming for different frequency bands of the radiated signal.
The conformal array sensor has different sub-array depending on different beam steering directions. According to the method to effective the sensor, the performance of the conformal array sensor can be different, where the sub-array selects an effective sensor. Also, due to the figure of the conformal array sensor, the figure of the sub-array can be different each other, which results in different performance on directivity index, beam width and etc. In this paper, two methods to select sub-array which is the criteria for each sensors position vector and directive vector were proposed. For two sub-array selection methods, the performance of the directivity index, horizontal and vertical beam width were compared with the average and variance. In addition, this comparison was conducted when the number of sensors was fixed. When the number of sensors was not fixed, the directional vector method mainly results in high performance, but the performance of vertical beam width was lower or equal. When the number of sensors was fixed, the performance of two methods is similar, but the performance of variance was deteriorated.
