  • N-Nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA) formation was studied as a function of chloramine concentration at a fixed dimethylamine (DMA) concentration of 0.05 mM at pH 7 and 8. Regression equations were developed by molar ratio of chloramine to DMA. The NDMA formation was dependent on molar ratio(chloramine/DMA) and was different when the ratio is less or greater than 1. The formation of NDMA increased with increasing chloramine concentration and a linear correlation was examined between NDMA concentration and the ratio on a log scale. The developed regression was applied to previously reported data and relative errors ranged from -79 to 163%. Regression equations could provide a potential tool to predict NDMA formation for a simple and quick estimation in water supply systems.

  • This paper proposes a data-driven methodology for online early damage identification under changing environmental conditions. The proposed method relies on two data analysis methods: feature-based method and hybrid principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel PCA to separate damage from environmental influences. First, spectral sub-band features, namely, spectral sub-band centroids (SSCs) and log spectral sub-band energies (LSSEs), are proposed as damage-sensitive features to extract damage information from measured structural responses. Second, hybrid modeling by integrating PCA and kernel PCA is performed on the spectral sub-band feature matrix for data normalization to extract both linear and nonlinear features for nonlinear procedure monitoring. After feature normalization, suppressing environmental effects, the control charts (Hotelling T2 and SPE statistics) is implemented to novelty detection and distinguish damage in structures. The hybrid PCA-KPCA technique is compared to KPCA by applying support vector machine (SVM) to evaluate the effectiveness of its performance in detecting damage. The proposed method is verified through numerical and full-scale studies (a Bridge Health Monitoring (BHM) Benchmark Problem and a cable-stayed bridge in China). The results demonstrate that the proposed method can detect the structural damage accurately and reduce false alarms by suppressing the effects and interference of environmental variations.

  • Purpose: ANSI/ADA has established standards for adequate radiopacity. This study was aimed to assess the changes in radiopacity of composite resins according to various tube-target distances and exposure times. Materials and Methods: Five 1-mm thick samples of Filtek P60 and Clearfil composite resins were prepared and exposed with six tube-target distance/exposure time setups (i.e., 40 cm, 0.2 seconds; 30 cm, 0.2 seconds; 30 cm, 0.16 seconds, 30 cm, 0.12 seconds; 15 cm, 0.2 seconds; 15 cm, 0.12 seconds) performing at 70 kVp and 7 mA along with a 12-step aluminum stepwedge (1 mm incremental steps) using a PSP digital sensor. Thereafter, the radiopacities measured with Digora for Windows software 2.5 were converted to absorbencies (i.e., A=-log (1-G/255)), where A is the absorbency and G is the measured gray scale). Furthermore, the linear regression model of aluminum thickness and absorbency was developed and used to convert the radiopacity of dental materials to the equivalent aluminum thickness. In addition, all calculations were compared with those obtained from a modified 3-step stepwedge (i.e., using data for the 2nd, 5th, and 8th steps). Results: The radiopacities of the composite resins differed significantly with various setups (p<0.001) and between the materials (p<0.001). The best predicted model was obtained for the 30 cm 0.2 seconds setup ($R^2$=0.999). Data from the reduced modified stepwedge was remarkable and comparable with the 12-step stepwedge. Conclusion: Within the limits of the present study, our findings support that various setups might influence the radiopacity of dental materials on digital radiographs.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate spacio-temporal structures of traffic flows on the subway network in the Metropolitan Seoul, and the relationships between topological structures of traffic flows and land use patterns. In particular we analyze in the topological structures of traffic flows on the subway network in time dimension as well as in spatial dimension. For the purpose, this study utilizes data mining techniques to the one day T-card transaction data of the last four years, which has developed for exploring the characteristics of traffic flows from large scale trip-transaction databases. The topological structures of traffic flows on the subway network has changed considerably during the last four years. The volumes of traffic flows, the travel time and stops per trip have increased until 2006 and decreased again in 2007. The results are visualized by utilizing GIS and analyzed, and thus the spatial patterns of traffic flows are analyzed. The spatial distribution patterns of trip origins and destinations show substantial differences among time zones during a day. We analyze the relationships between traffic flows at subway stops and the geographical variables reflecting land use around them. We obtain 6 log-linear functions from stepwise multiple regression analysis. We test multicollinearity among the variables and autocollelation for the residuals.

  • This study deals with modeling of head-related transfer functions(HRTFs) using principal components analysis(PCA) in the time and frequency domains. Four PCA models based on head-related impulse responses(HRIRs), complex-valued HRTFs, augmented HRTFs, and log-magnitudes of HRTFs are investigated. The objective of this study is to compare modeling performances of the PCA models in the least-squares sense and to show the theoretical relationship between the PCA models. In terms of the number of principal components needed for modeling, the PCA model based on HRIR or augmented HRTFs showed more efficient modeling performance than the PCA model based on complex-valued HRTFs. The PCA model based on HRIRs in the time domain and that based on augmented HRTFs in the frequency domain are shown to be theoretically equivalent. Modeling performance of the PCA model based on log-magnitudes of HRTFs cannot be compared with that of other PCA models because the PCA model deals with log-scaled magnitude components only, whereas the other PCA models consider both magnitude and phase components in linear scale.

  • Consolidation characteristics have been investigated by using Rowe cell consolidation tester for dredged soil, which is more than two times as much as the liquid limit. To examine the effects of variation of water content on consolidation characteristic, tests were carried out varying the initial water content from $100\%\;to\;150\%.$ The results were compared with the consolidation characteristics of remolded clay. The test results showed that the hither the initial water content of dredged clay was, the more noticeable the non-linear behavior of e-log P curves occurred. The variation of the gradient was apparent to load stage 40kPa and became less apparent after load stage 80kPa on the e-log P curves. Ratio of compression index stayed within the range suggested by Mesri and variation of initial water content has hardly influenced the coefficient of consolidation. On the contrary, it was found that the magnitude of consolidation load affects the vertical coefficient of consolidation. The variation of stratum thickness during consolidation processing needs to be taken into consideration since hydraulic fill would go through a much larger scale strain than land soil when it is subject to a load. In this study, the consolidation period considering the variation of stratum thickness was analyzed and the results were compared with those of existing consolidation studies which did not consider the variation of stratum thickness. According to the results of the study, the consolidation period of the ground with a larger strain was calculated more close to observed value in case of Mikasa theory which takes the variation of stratum thickness into consideration.

  • Background: Curcumin has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, antitumor, and antinociceptive activity when administered systemically. We investigated the analgesic efficacy of intrathecal curcumin in a rat model of inflammatory pain. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats were prepared for intrathecal catheterization. Pain was evoked by injection of formalin solution (5%, $50{\mu}l$) into the hind paw. Curcumin doses of 62.5, 125, 250, and $500{\mu}g$were delivered through an intrathecal catheter to examine the flinching responses. The $ED_{50}$ values (half-maximal effective dose) with 95% confidence intervals of curcumin for both phases of the formalin test were calculated from the dose-response lines fitted by least-squares linear regression on a log scale. Results: In rats with intrathecal administration of curcumin, the flinching responses were significantly decreased in both phases. The slope of the regression line was significantly different from zero only in phase 2, and the $ED_{50}$ value (95% confidence interval) of curcumin was $511.4{\mu}g$ (23.5-1126.5). There was no apparent abnormal behavior following the administration of curcumin. Conclusions: Intrathecal administration of curcumin decreased inflammatory pain in rats, and further investigation to elucidate the precise mechanism of spinal action of curcumin is warranted.

  • We examined the effect of soil:water ratio on the equivalent concentration of individual electrolyte species and the electrical conductivities (EC) of the diluted extracts of 24 soil samples (loam or silt loam) collected from rose-cultivated plastic houses to estimate the EC of saturated soil-paste extracts (ECe) from diluted soil extracts. With increasing volume ratio of water (higher dilution), the equivalent concentrations of each electrolyte species and their sum increased. The relative contribution to the EC, however, was highest for $NO_3{^-}$, irrespective of soil:water ratio. The measured ECe was 6.36 for loam and $8.09dS\;m^{-1}$ for silt loam soils and the corresponding soil:water ratio was 0.38 and 0.50, respectively. The EC_e estimated from the EC of diluted extracts at 1:1, 1:2, or 1:5 soil:water ratios using their corresponding uniform diluted factors was lower than the measured EC_e and this difference was greater with higher dilution and EC values. Therefore, the alternative diluted factors (y) for each soil: water ratio were obtained following the definition of diluted factor and were correlated significantly with volume ratios of added water (x): y=1.55x+0.5 for loam and y=1.21x+0.48 for silt loam soils. On the other hand, correlation analyses of the EC of soil extracts (y) to the volume ratio of added water (x) on log-log scale yielded linear models: logy = -0.805logx + logb, SD of slope=0.05, b=sample specific constant, n=24). With known saturation percentage of a sample representing a group and and the EC of diluted extract of a given soil, the EC_e could be predicted using the proposed logarithmic equation.

  • Purpose To identify the correspondence between the central sensitivity of several visual field (VF) tests and ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness in early glaucoma patients with parafoveal scotoma. Methods Fifty-seven eyes from 57 patients with glaucomatous optic neuropathy and parafoveal scotoma were analyzed using the standard automated perimetry (SAP) C10-2 test, the SAP C24-2 test, and the frequency doubling technology perimetry (FDT) C24-2 test. The correlation between the VF central sensitivity and the GC-IPL thickness from macular scans via optical coherence tomography was analyzed. Results The central sensitivity was $27.51{\pm}5.43dB$, $27.39{\pm}5.05dB$, and $22.09{\pm}5.08dB$ for SAP C24-2, SAP C10-2, and FDT C24-2, respectively. Mean GC-IPL thickness was $70.2{\pm}8.5{\mu}m$. Using regression analysis, the value of log $R^2$ between the logarithmic central sensitivity and GC-IPL thickness was 0.498, and the linear $R^2$ between the antilogarithmic central sensitivity and GC-IPL thickness in SAP C10-2 was 0.486, and both were statistically significant (p < 0.05). This relationship was stronger in early glaucoma patients compared to late glaucoma patients using SAP C10-2. Conclusions The structure-function relationship between GC-IPL thickness and central sensitivity was better with SAP C10-2, especially in early glaucoma patients, compared to other VF modalities.

  • Object and Method:Minor physical anomalies(MPAs) are frequently seen in patients with schizophrenia. MPAs are considered to arise from the anomalous development of ectoderm-originated tissues in the developing fetus. Since the central nervous system originates from ectoderm, MPAs can be regarded as externally observable and objective indicators of the aberrant development which might have taken place in the central nervous system. To investigate whether MPAs are more frequent in schizophrenic patients, the frequencies of MPAs were compared between schizophrenic patients and normal controls. Total 245 schizophrenic patients diagnosed with DSM-IV(male : 158, female : 87), and 418 normal control subjects(male : 216, female : 202) were included in this study. The MPAs were measured using the modified Waldrop scale with fifteen items in six bodily regions; head, eye, ear, mouth, hand, and foot. Result:The total scores of Waldrop scale were $4.40{\pm}1.93$($mean{\pm}standard$ deviation) in patients and $3.43{\pm}1.68$ in controls for females, and for males, $4.58{\pm}1.75$ in patients and $4.28{\pm}1.59$ in controls. For females, the excess of MPAs in schizophrenic patients was statistically significant(t-test : p<0.001). For males, schizophrenic patients also showed more MPAs than normal controls, but this tendency did not reach statistical significance (t-test : p=0.094). When the modified Waldrop total scores excluding head circumference were compared, the total scores in schizophrenic patients were significantly higher for both male and female subjects(t-test : male p<0.001, female p=0.001). The individual anomaly items included in Waldrop scale were also investigated. The items of epicanthus, hypertelorism, malformed ears, syndactylia were significantly more frequent in schizophrenic patients. In contrast, the items of adherent ear lobes, asymmetric ears, furrowed tongue, curved fifth finger, single palmar crease and big gap between toes did not show any differences in frequency between schizophrenic patients and normal controls. Since a lot of statistical analyses showed different results between male and female subjects, it seems to be necessary to consider gender as an important controlling variable for the analysis, however only the item of head circumference showed statistically significant gender-related difference according to log-linear analysis. Conclusion:With a relatively large sample size, the frequencies of MPAs enlisted in Waldrop scale were compared between schizophrenic patients and normal controls in this study. MPAs were more frequently seen in schizophrenic patients and, especially, several specific items in the Waldrop scale showed prominent excess in schizophrenic patients. Although definite conclusions cannot be drawn due to the inherent limitation of the study using Waldrop scale, these results seem to support the possibility that aberrant neurodevelopmental process might be involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia in some of the patients.
