Along the Ulsan Fault System, many Quaternary faults have been reported and investigated with outcrop observation and trench excavation to clarify the neotectonic movements and fault parameters such as length, displacement, slip rate and recurrence interval. In the northern part of the Ulsan fault system, we have interpreted small scale(1:10,000) aerial photographs and extracted lineaments by geomophological features to select trench site. After precise field survey and tracing for lineaments, two trench sites at Galgokri, Gyeongju were selected on the lineament to elucidate the fault movement history. One is successful in finding faults but the other is not. In the Galgok-Chisil trench(3m(w) x 1.5m(d) x 10m(l)), very closed two Quaternary faults cut the alluvial deposits of which age shows about 10-3ka. More than three times of fault movements can be inferred by geologic structures and C-14 dating. Repeatedly fault movements had been occurred before 10 ka, between 10ka-4.9 ka, between 4.9-1.4 ka at Galgok-Chisil trench section.
The study is aimed at the extraction of the groundwater potential areas utilizing the remotely sensed data from satellites. The results of the study are summarized as follows. Analyses of the existing operational wells for groundwater supply indicate that 81% of them are related with lineaments and 51% of them are located at the intersections of lineameters. Thus the features of lineaments are considered to be one of the most important parameters to extract a high potertial area of groundwater. Taking into acount features of lineament, high potential points were extracted from Landsat TM data based on the theory developed in this research, then verifications were made through actual drilling. The result of verification indicates that 9 points produces more 200 cubic meter/day which is the amount required from economical point of view for an operational use. Since the actual boring was not made on the recommended points for 4 points due to the difficulty of access to the exact points and of the approval for boring, they did not yield enough output. The result might have been improved if the exact points were bored and if the boring bad been made deeper, since the maximum depth of boring was limited to 62 meters.
This study presents results of analysis on fault-related landforms and the Quaternary fluvial landforms, which are important evidences for active faulting by identifying surface deformation, around the Ulsan Fault Zone. In addition, this study suggests lineament map and inferred active fault-line map based on analyzing linearity and continuity of these landforms and by compiling location information of existing active faults. We convince that quantitative tectonic-geomorphological analysis are an effective method for active faults tracking, in particular, considering the conditions of relatively low seismicity and surface ruptured-events in the Korean Peninsula compared to plate boundary active areas. However, research on active fault in South Korea is just an infant stage since the 1990s and requires accumulation of research achievements on development and application of various fault analysis techniques, analysing and standardizing linear structures.
The Yangsan Fault is one of the main fault systems in the Korean peninsula. It can be divided into three segments (northern, central, and southern) by its paleoseismic and structural geologic properties. Based on the geomorphic features of the northern segment, which includes the Yugye Fault, we identified deflected streams as a geomorphic marker of strike-slip component of the fault, and knickpoints along the streams as evidence of dip-slip component of the fault. Geomorphic analyses showed that (1) the horizontal displacements of deflected streams decreased and (2) the retreat amounts of knickpoints tend to increased toward north along the lineament. We interpreted the variations caused by strain partitioning; that is, there might be some increases of the vertical component toward north, whereas the main strike-slip fault system dies out, splaying into horsetail structure toward north. Based on the response time of the landforms, these interpretations imply that (1) there were differences between horizontal slip rate and vertical slip rate along strike, and/or (2) there were different timings between horizontal and vertical deformations by fault.
This study analyzed the distribution of fluvial landforms, fault-related geomorphic features and lineaments around the area of Ungchon-Ungsang in the Dongrae Fault, and discusses the charateristics of geomorphic development based on those. As a result, the NE-SW lineaments are predominantly developed in many numbers within the study area, and the NW-SE or N-S secondary lineaments are developed induced by multiple deformation with the Yangsan Fault. Geomorphologically, the early tectonic history of the Ungchon-Ungsang basin is largely divided into three stages ; 1) the Tertiary fault activity and formation of fracture zone, 2) development of erosional basin, 3) local crustal movements and development of fault-related topography. It is assumed that alluvial fans, deflected channel and stream piracy were formed by local tectonic movements related to faultings during the Quaternary.
Purpose: All masks are created by craftspeople. Accordingly, most masks are generally predictable in dimensions, and the portraitures usually depict the faces and heads of humans. The authors found some masks representing the features of facial asymmetry, such as hemifacial microsomia and rerely lateral facial cleft. Methods: Reviewing the legends of wearing masks with a medley of grotesque features, the authors could deduce the tone of society in those days. Results: A mask, 'crooked mouth', of Native Americans shows typical lineament of hemifacial microsomia. The deformity of the face was legendarily regarded as resulting from trauma caused by either 'one's fault' or a 'curse of God'. 'Grandmother' mask, used in the Korean masque dance of the Kosung province and Sooyoung province also shows the typical features of hemifacial microsomia which represent the old, deserted wife. 'Kori sanni yakka' mask in Sri Lanka, shows the facial asymmetry. In the legend, the child who became demon captured humans and caused illness through wind, phlegm, and bile to revenge on his father who killed his mother by deception of her maid. Conclusion: The authors presume that the victims of severe facial asymmetry were treated contemptuously at that time.
