  • The on-line SPE-HPLC coupling system was developed for the efficient separation and determination of trace pesticides, such as phenoxyacetic acids and esters, and triazines in aqueous solutions. By using the developed SPE-HPLC on-line system, the band broadening usually observed in single precolumn switching mode was greatly reduced, consequently, the quantitative determination of trace pesticides could be achieved, Besides, since most of the analytes preconcentrated by SPE column could be injected directly into HPLC system, the limit of detection can be improved down to ppt level.

  • We propose two new approaches that automatically parallelize Java programs at runtime. These approaches, which rely on run-time trace information collected during program execution, dynamically recompile Java byte code that can be executed in parallel. One approach utilizes trace information to improve traditional loop parallelization, and the other parallelizes traces instead of loop iterations. We also describe a cost/benefit model that makes intelligent parallelization decisions, as well as a parallel execution environment to execute parallelized programs. These techniques are based on Jikes RVM. Our approach is evaluated by parallelizing sequential Java programs, and its performance is compared to that of the manually parallelized code. According to the experimental results, our approach has low overheads and achieves competitive speedups compared to the manually parallelizing code. Moreover, trace parallelization can exploit parallelism beyond loop iterations.

  • This paper proposes a new fast algorithm that detects the lanes on the road using Moore-Neighbor edge trace algorithm, which traces the edge elements by searching the connectivity in eight direction window. The detected line components are connected if they have the same orientation on the same line. The proposed algorithm is faster than other conventional algorithms since it tests only the connectivities of the line segments. The performance of the proposed algorithm has tested by the experiments to test how fast and accurate.

  • The analysis of trace herbicides using the on-line SPE-HPLC system and a photochemical reaction was studied. 18 compounds of herbicides including eight triazines, six phenoxy acids and esters, and four other herbicides were examined. The on-line SPE-HPLC system developed for selection of eluting solvent improved chromatographic efficiency. The recoveries of herbicides were higher than 77%. With 100 mL tap water samples, the detection limits for all analytes were in the 0.1-2.3×10-10 M range. Detection was done by a UV or fluorescence spectrometer after photochemical reaction at the end of the column with 2W or 450W mercury lamp. Without a photochemical reaction, all compounds responded to 230 nm UV detector, but phenoxy acids and esters were weakly detected. However, with a photochemical reaction, these compounds were selectively detected at 320 nm wavelength of UV absorption and 400 nm emission of the fluorescence detectors. This method can be used for the analysis of environmental water containing herbicides at trace levels.

  • With the rapid growth of Internet, many devices such as Web TVs, PDAs and Web phones, begin to be directly connected to the Internet. These devices need real-time operating systems (RTOS) to support complex real-time applications running on them. Development of such real-time applications called embedded internet applications, is difficult due to the lack of adequate tools, especially debuggers. In this paper we present a new tracepoint debugging tool for the Qplus-T RTOS embedded system, which facilitates the instrumentations of the real-time software applications with timing trace-points. Compared with traditional breakpoint debugger, this trace-point debugger provides the ability to dynamically collect and record application data for on-line examination and for further off-line analysis. And, the trace-points can also provide the means for assigning new values to the running application's variables, without neither halting its execution nor interfering with its natural execution flow. Our trace-point debugger provides a highly efficient method for adding numerous monitoring trace-points within a real time target application such as Qplus-T internet applications, utilizing these trace-points to monitor and to analyze the application's behavior while it is running. And also, our trace debugger is different from previous one in that we can specify and detect the timing violations using its RTL (Real-Time Logic) trace experiments.

  • Trace metal ions such as $Cd^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ in a highly saline sample were subjected to on-line complexation with 4-(2-thiazolylazo) resorcinol (TAR) dissolved in a background electrolyte (BGE) under transient isotachophoresis (TITP) conditions. A long plug of the saline sample, containing the trace metal ions but devoid of TAR, was injected into a coated capillary filled with a BGE composed of 150 mM 2-(cyclohexylamino) ethanesulfonic acid (CHES) and 110 mM triethylamine (TEA) at pH 9.7. Since the electrophoretic mobility of TAR fell between the mobilities of the anionic leading electrolyte ($Cl^-$ in the sample) and the anionic terminating background electrolyte ($CHES^-$), a highly concentrated zone of TAR from the BGE was formed at the rear of the sample matrix and then the metal cations toward the cathode were swept by isotachophoretically assisted on-line complexation (IAOC) between the metal ions and the isotachophoretically stacked TAR. As a result, anionic metal-TAR complexes were formed efficiently, which satisfy the TITP conditions between $Cl^-$ and $CHES^-$. The enrichment factors of metal ions including $Cd^{2+}$ were up to 780-fold compared to a conventional CZE mode using absorbance detection. The detection limits were 17 nM, 15 nM, and 27 nM for $Ni^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ in a 250 mM NaCl matrix, respectively. Our method was successfully applied to the analysis of urine samples without desalting.

  • In a process of insect foot recognition, footprint segments as basic areas for recognition need to be extracted from scanned insect footprints and appropriate features should be found from the footprint segments in order to discriminate kinds of insects, because the characteristics of the features are important to classify insects. In this paper, we propose methods for automatic footprint segmentation and feature extraction. We use a Trace transform method in order to find out appropriate features from the extracted segments by the above methods. The Trace transform method builds a new type of data structure from the segmented images by functions using parallel trace lines and the new type of data structure has characteristics invariant to translation, rotation and reflection of images. This data structure is converted to Triple features by Diametric and Circus functions, and the Triple features are used for discriminating patterns of insect footprints. In this paper, we show that the Triple features found by the proposed methods are enough distinguishable and appropriate for classifying kinds of insects.

  • In a stream of water sample, trace metal ions are quantitatively coprecipitated with Indium hydroxide and filtered. The filtered precipitate is continuously dissolved in 3 M nitric acid and introduced to ICP directly. The lead, cadmium, and copper are concentrated more than 10-fold and determined with ICP-AES at a sampling frequency of 10/hour. The detection limits are 2.89, 1.43,0.52 ppb for lead, cadmium, and copper respectively. Recoveries of lead, cadmium, and copper are 98.7, 94.3, and 104.5% respectively. The RSD values for three elements are about 3-5% currently.

  • Precipitation and phase transition of iron minerals in mine drainage greatly affect the behavior of trace elements. However, the precipitation of ferrihydrite, one of the major iron minerals precipitated in drainage, and the related behavior of trace elements have hardly been studied. In this study, the effects of pH change and time on mineral precipitation characteristics in mine drainage from the Munkyeong coal mine were investigated, and the behavioral changes of trace elements related to the precipitation of these minerals were studied. In the case of precipitated mineral phases, goethite was observed at pH 4, and 2-line ferrihydrite mixed with small amount of 6-line ferrihydrite was mainly identified at pH 6 or higher. In addition, it was observed that the precipitation of calcite additionally increased as the pH increased in the samples at pH 6 or higher. The occurrence of goethite was probably due to the phase change of initially precipitated ferrihydrite within a short time under the influence of low pH. Our results showed that the concentration of trace elements was strongly influenced by pH and time. With increasing time, Fe concentration in the drainage showed a abrupt decrease due to the precipitation of iron minerals, and the concentration of As existing as oxyanions in the drainage, also decreased rapidly like Fe regardless of the pH values. This decrease in As concentration was mainly due to co-precipitation with ferrihydrite, and also partly to surface adsorption on goethite at low pH in drainage. Contrary to this observation, the concentration of other trace elements, such as Cd, Co, Zn, and Ni was greatly affected by the pH regardless of the mineral species. The lower the pH value, the higher the concentration of these trace elements were observed in the drainage, and vice versa at higher pH. These results indicate that the behavior of trace elements present as cations is more greatly affected by the mineral surface charge influenced by the pH values than the type of the precipitated mineral.

  • In order to avoid the electrical fire, AFCI(Arc Fault Cirruit Interrupter) has been obligated to be adopted in the United States of America since 2002. AFCI using line resistor of neutral trace needs to compensate the variation of the line resistance by temperature variation. In this paper, the ASIC including the temperature compensation circuit is implemented. The proposed implementation is verified by showing the effectiveness of an electric and a temperature characteristics for Arc signals by simulation results.
