  • The dynamic behavior of Al-Mg alloys plasma was very unstable and this instability was closely related to the unstable motion of keyhole during laser irradiation. The keyhole fluctuated both in size and shape and its fluctuation period was about 440 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This instability has been estimated to be caused by the evaporation phenomena of metals with different boiling point and latent heats of vaporization. Therefore, the authors have conducted the spectroscopic diagnostics of plasma induced in the pulsed YAG laser welding of Al-Mg alloys in air and argon atmospheres. In the air environment, the identified spectra were atomic lines of Al, Mg, Cr, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn, and singly ionized Mg line, as well as strong molecular spectrum of AlO, MgO and AIH. It was confirmed that the resonant lines of Al and Mg were strongly self-absorbed, in particular in the vicinity of pool surface. The self-absorption of atomic Mg line was more eminent in alloys containing higher Mg. These facts showed that the laser-induced plasma was relatively a low temperature and high density metallic vapor. The intensities of molecular spectra of AlO and MgO were different each other depending on the power density of laser beam. Under the low power density irradiation condition, the MgO band spectra were predominant in intensity, while the AlO spectra became much stronger in higher power density. In argon atmosphere the band spectra of MgO and AlO completely vanished, but AlH molecular spectra was detected clearly. The hydrogen source was presumably the hydrogen solved in the base Metal, absorbed water on the surface oxide layer or H$_2$ and $H_2O$ in the shielding gas. The temporal change in spectral line intensities was quite similar to the fluctuation of keyhole. The time average plasma temperature at 1 mm high above the surface of A5083 alloy was determined by the Boltzmann plot method of atomic Cr lines of different excitation energy. The obtained electron temperature was 3, 280$\pm$150 K which was about 500 K higher than the boiling point of pure aluminum. The electron number density was determined by measuring the relative intensities of the spectra1lines of atomic and singly ionized Magnesium, and the obtained value was 1.85 x 1019 1/㎥.

  • This study deals with the friction and wear characteristics of C-N coated SCM415 steel. The PSII(plasma source ion implantation) apparatus was built and a SCM415 test piece with steel substrate was treated with carbon nitrogen by this apparatus. The composition and structure of the surface layer were analyzed and compared with that of PVD(physical vapor decomposition) coated TiN layer. It was found that both of friction coefficient of C-N coating and TiN coating decreased with increasing load, however, C-N coating showed relatively lower faction coefficient than that of TiN coating. The micro-vickers hardness of C-N film is 3200 Hv, which is $32\~43\%$ higher than that of TiN film. The critical load of C-N film is 52N, which is $25\%$ higher than that of TiN film. The hardness of C-N film fabricated by Plasma ion implantation is $61\~70\%$ higher than that of base material, and faction coefficient is $14\~50\%$ lower than that of base material. It is also interesting to note that the friction was changed from adhesive wear mode to light oxidizing wear mode.

  • Intense quasi-monochromatic x-ray irradiation from the linear plasma target is described. The plasma x-ray generator employs a high-voltage power supply, a low-impedance coaxial transmission line, a high-voltage condenser with a capacity of about 200 nF, a turbo-molecular pump, a thyristor pulse generator as a trigger device, and a flash x-ray tube. The high-voltage main condenser is charged up to 55 kV by the power supply, and the electric charges in the condenser are discharged to the tube after triggering the cathode electrode. The x-ray tube is of a demountable triode that is connected to the turbo molecular pump with a pressure of approximately 1 mPa. As electron flows from the cathode electrode are roughly converged to the molybdenum target by the electric field in the tube, the weakly ionized plasma, which consists of metal ions and electrons, forms by the target evaporating. In the present work, the peak tube voltage was almost equal to the initial charging voltage of the main condenser, and the peak current was about 20 kA with a charging voltage of 55 kV. When the charging voltage was increased, the linear plasma x-ray source grew, and the characteristic x-ray intensities of K-series lines increased. The quite sharp lines such as hard x-ray lasers were clearly observed. The quasi-monochromatic radiography was performed by a new film-less computed radiography system.

  • The a-C:H films have been grown on the glass substrate by PECVD mathod, where plasma was generated with a 60Hz line power source. The carbonization is checked from peak intensities of D($sp^3$) and G($sp^2$) peaks in Raman spectra. The hydronization and C-H bonding status in films can also be determined from FTIR results. Both the bonding strength of C-H and the ratio of $sp^3$ to $sp^2$ in bonding are found to be slightly dependent of partial pressure of $C_2H_2$. Judging from above results, we can conclude that the best value for partial pressure of $C_2H_2$ in growing process of thick films is about 15%.

  • The solar chromosphere can be observed well through strong absorption lines. We infer the physical parameters of chromospheric plasmas from these lines using a multilayer spectral inversion. This is a new technique of spectral inversion. We assume that the atmosphere consists of a finite number of layers. In each layer the absorption profile is constant and the source function is allowed to vary with optical depth. Specifically, we consider a three-layer model of radiative transfer where the lowest layer is identified with the photosphere and the two upper layers are identified with the chromosphere. This three-layer model is fully specified by 13 parameters. Four parameters can be fixed to prescribed values, and one parameter can be determined from the analysis of a satellite photospheric line. The remaining eight parameters are determined from a constrained least-squares fitting. We applied the multilayer spectral inversion to the spectral data of the Hα and the Ca II 854.21 nm lines taken in a quiet region by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) of the Goode Solar Telescope (GST). We find that our model successfully fits most of the observed profiles and produces regular maps of the model parameters. We conclude that our multilayer inversion is useful to infer chromospheric plasma parameters on the Sun.

  • This is a report on the fabrication of a flexible OTFT backplane for electrophoretic display (EPD) using a printing technology. A practical printing technology for a polycarbonate substrate was developed by combining the conventional screen and inkjet printing technologies with the wet etching and oxygen plasma processes. For the gate electrode, the screen printing technology with Ag ink was developed to define the minimum line width of ${\sim}5{\mu}m$ and the thickness of ${\sim}70nm$ with the resistivity of ${\sim}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, which are suitable for displays with SVGA resolution. For the source and drain (S/D) electrodes, PEDOT:PSS, whose conductivity was drastically enhanced to 450 S/cm by adding 10 wt% glycerol, was adopted. In addition, the modified PEDOT:PSS could be neatly confined in the specific S/D electrode area that had been pretreated with oxygen. The OTFTs that made use of the developed printing technology produced a mobility of ${\sim}0.13cm^2/Vs.ec$ and an on/off current ratio of ${\sim}10^6$, which are comparable to those using thermally evaporated Au for the S/D electrode.

  • We present a fast inspection method of machine vision for in-line quality assurance of liquid crystal displays(LCD) and plasma display panels(PDP). The method incorporates an optical spatial filter in the Fourier plane of the imaging optics to block the normal periodic pattern, extracting only defects real time without relying on intensive software image process. Special emphasis is on designing a collimated white light source to provide high degree of spatial coherence for effective real time Fourier transform. At the same time, a low level of temporal coherence is attained to improve defect detection capabilities by avoiding undesirable coherent noises. Experimental results show that the proposed inspection method offers a detection accuracy of 15% tolerance, which is sufficient for industrial applications.

  • We have generated the argon plasma in the diode chamber based on the established coaxial electrode type and investigated the emitted visible light for emission spectroscopy. We applied various voltages $2\sim3.5kV$ to the device by 0.5kV, and obtained the emission spectrum data for the focused plasma in the diode chamber on the argon pressure of 330 mTorr. The Ar I and Ar II emission line are observed. The electron temperature and ion density have been measured by the Boltzmann plot and Saha equation from assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) The Ar I and Ar II ion densities have been calculated to be $\sim10^{15}/cc\;and\;~10^{13}/cc$, respectively, from Saha equation.

It was considered that coating of TiN, which was conducted at a vacuum chamber at about 500$^{\circ}C$, results in a tempering of base material that causes microstructural change, which in turn resulted in decreasing of hardness. The C-N coated gear and pinion had higher wear resistance that of TiN coated gear and pinion. C-N coating significantly improved the friction and wear resistance of the gear.
