A Study on the Algorithm for Fault Discrimination in Transmission Lines using Advanced Computational Intelligence(ACI) (ACI 기법을 이용한 송전선로 고장 종류 판별에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the rapid and accurate algorithm for fault discrimination in transmission lines. When faults occur in transmission lines, fault discrimination is very important. If high impedance faults occur in transmission lines, it cannot be detected by overcurrent relays. The method using current and voltage cannot discriminate high impedance fault. Because of this reason this paper uses voltage and zero sequence current, and the proposed algorithm uses fuzzy logic method. This algorithm uses voltage and zero sequence current per period in case of faults. Single line ground fault and three-phase fault can be detective using voltage. Two-line ground fault and line to line fault and high impedance can be detected using zero sequence current. To prove the performance of the algorithm, it test algorithm with signal obtained from ATPDraw simulation.

  • The unbalance current on the bundled conductors of the UHV overhead transmission line is one of the factors affected on power transmission system. It is varied by distance between of bundled conductors and of phase to phase, phase arrangement. In this paper, we calculated unbalance current on the bundled conductors by a variety of line arrangements and also calculated magnetic field at the circumference of the line fed with this unbalance current.

  • Distance relay is being used for transmission line protection. Recently, current differential relay is used with high reliability in power system. This kind of relay is reported that it has a reliable detection ability, even so high impedance faults take place in transmission line. Therefore it is expected to use and expand widely in many utilities. Tripping of the relay is decided according to the difference between differential and restraint current. However the tripping criterion can be changed by the manufacturers. This paper presents an operational scheme of current differential relay for transmission line protection with graphical model. It is developed for educational purpose for students interesting in power system and protection engineer in utility. MATLAB is used to establish the models.

  • We propose here sequential 2 methods for obtain information of current or potential data for power transmission line. One is a digital data transmission unit, this is, an output of a current sensor of power transmission line is digitalized by use of an easy asynchronous protocol. The unit has high speed transform rate, easy making header caused of consisting of only logic circuit. The other is, the output of the unit is transformed via LAN interface and displayed on a personal computer.   • Improved flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is composed of a series transformer and superconducting unit of the YBCO coated conductor. The primary and secondary coils in the transformer were wound in series each other through an iron core and the YBCO coated conductor was connected with secondary coil in parallel. In this paper, we investigated the current limiting characteristics through initial line current after fault initiation. through the analysis, it was shown that the smaller initial line current is superior to current limiting characteristics and a point of view of power burden of the YBCO coated conductor.

  • We derive the radiation field equation at the naar field region to analyse EMI by the rectangular horn antenna. The EMI loadk current calculated from the load current induced on the transmission line being close to the rectangular horn antenna using the field theory and the transmission line theory. We find the conditions minimizing the EMI from the load current transfer function of distance, frequency and impedances at sending and receiving end. The smaller sending end impedance, the larger EMI load current and the larger sending impedance, the smaller EMI load current.

  • If the three phases are not balanced, the current in neutral line is not zero. Then, the induced voltage can be generated In communication line. The KEPCO's rule about unbalanced current in single electric pole is a twenty percent of phase current. But the unbalanced current in double electric pole can't decide the rule because there are many different views. This paper develops the calculation and analysis technique of neutral current in single electric pole and double electric pole using equivalent circuit analysis, vector analysis and EMTP simulation.

Simulation for current limiting characteristics of the resistive and inductive SFCL with line-to-ground fault

  • We investigated the current limiting characteristics of resistive and inductive SFCLs with 100 $\Omega$ of impedance for line-to-ground faults in the 154 kV transmission system. The fault simulation at the phase angles $0^{\circ}$, $^45{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ showed that the resistive SFCL limits the fault current less than 17 kA without any DC component after one half cycle from the instant of the fault. On the other hand, the inductive SFCL suppresses the current below 14 kA, but with 5 kA of DC component which decreases to zero in 5 cycles. We concluded that the inductive SFCL has higher performance in current limiting effect, but the resistive SFCL was better from the viewpoint of less DC components.

  • We have performed an EMTDC simulation for the current limiting effects of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for the 154 kV transmission line between the Gaepo and Sungnam substations. The fault current increased up to 39 kA during an artificial ground fault. The SFCL with 100 ${\Omega}$ impedance after quench limited the current to 15 kA within a half cycle. This limited current is well below the upper limit of a circuit breaker, suggesting that the impedance of the SFCL in the transmission line is sufficient.

The fault simulation at the phase angles 0$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, and 90$^{\circ}$ showed that the resistive SFCL limited the fault current less than 15 kA without any DC component after one half cycle from the instant of the fault. On the other hand, the inductive SFCL suppressed the current below 12 KA, but with 3 kA of DC component which decreased to zero in 5 cycles. We concluded that the inductive SFCL had higher performance in current limiting but the resistive SFCL was better from the view point of DC components.
