  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effective pretreatment of foodwaste for the anaerobic digestion. Considering the foodwaste generation and the anaerobic digester for municipal wastewater sludges, the some pretreatment processes were performed such as the grinding of foodwastes with the addition of water, the mixing with sludges, and the hydrolysis with the addition of NaOH. The results were as followings ; 1. As the stage of feasibility test in laboratory scale, the foodwaste grinding using a household garbage disposer was performed with three different water mixing ratios of 1:1, 1:5 and 1:9 as weight base. The physicochemical characteristics of grinded foodwaste were analyzed and the effective conditions was recommended as the 1 :5mixing ratio of foodwaste and water and the below 8mm particle size. 2. And the mixing of foodwaste and municipal wastewater sludge was studied with three different mixing ratios of 1:9, 3:7 and 5:5 as weight base. The physicochemical characteristics of the mixed foodwaste and sludges were analyzed and the effective mixing ratio was recommended as 3:7 of foodwaste and sludge.

  • The origin of domestic donkeys in China has been controversial. To clarify the origin of Chinese domestic donkeys, we investigated the partial mitochondrial D-loop sequences of 126 samples from 12 native breeds. The results revealed two mitochondrial origins, lineage Somali and lineage Nubian of African wild ass detected in Chinese domestic donkeys. Lineage Somali was predominant in Chinese domestic donkey breeds. The pattern of genetic variation in ass mtDNA D-loop sequences indicated that the two lineages Somali and Nubian from China had undergone population expansion events. In a combined analysis of lineages Somali and Nubian between previously published sequences from other countries/regions and sequences of Chinese domestic donkeys, the results indicated that the two lineages of Chinese domestic donkeys were from Africa and supported the African maternal origins of Chinese domestic donkeys. There was no obvious geographical structure in Chinese domestic donkey breeds, but the population showed abundant mtDNA diversity. The spread routes of Chinese domestic donkeys were also discussed.

  • Effects of three biological control agents such as Xanthobacter autotrophycus, Tanichthys albonubes and Oryzias latipes on the morphology and growth of cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa were studied. The experiments were consisted of six treatments of living organism (LO) and culture filtered water of three organisms (CFW). Three LOs effectively decreased the density of M. aeruginosa, and then cyanobacteria hardy showed in the microscopic field after 5 days of cultivation. All LO and CFW agents induced the colonial formation of cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa, although there were little differences in colony formation according to the kinds, density and type of treatment. In particular, the higher density treatment of fish CFW induced effectively the colony formation of cyanobacteria, compared to the bacterial LO and CFW. Thus, the application of bio agents to control the cyanobacterial bloom is needed to the further study to diminish the adverse effects such as the enhancement of colony formation towards on the new bloom against the aquatic ecosystem.

  • The fish fauna and community structure at 20 stations in streams of the Mt. Biseul were investigated from June 2003 to May 2004. During the study period, 29 species, 25 genera belonging to 9 families were collected. Cyprinid fish occupied 48.3% (14 species) and cobitid fish had 13.8% (4 species). Six species (22.2%) were korean endemic and two species of Micropterus salmoides and Lepomis macrochirus were exotic. It was found that the population density of carnivorous fish (Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis) increased in the lower-reach of small streams in the Mt. Biseul area since it had been introduced from the other native rivers in the middle 1990s. As the result of analyzing fish community in the surveyed area, the species diversity ranged from 0.553 to 1.023. The findings showed that the Geumpo, Chacheon and Hyeonpung streams had higher species diversity indicies of 0.936 ${\sim}$ 1.023 than the Sincheon and Gisegok streams with 0.553 ${\sim}$ 0.727.

  • Since, in 1970, diatoms and diatom indices was first used in measuring quality of streams and rivers at the Seine Water Agency in France, five other water agencies began to show interests since 1990. In 1994, associated with CEMAGREF (Centre National du Machinisme Agricole du Genie Rural et des Eaux et des Forets : environmental science and expertise for the sustainable management of land and water), the six French Water Agencies (Seine, Rhone-Mediterranee-Corse, Artois- Picardie, Loire-Bretagne, Rhin-Meuse and Adour-Garonne) developed a practical diatom index, which is liable to be used routinely in the territorial streams and rivers of whole France, and which is liable to promote and facilitate its use in monitoring water networks. In 1995, the first version of a biological diatom index (IBD) was generated by them. Since then, the software update for IBD calculation and the user's network have led to numerous practical applications in France. Furthermore, the Water Agencies have run applicable programs on the National Basin Network from 1996, and the initial data set of IBD was completed. Re- examination of the complete data set was done at the end of 1998, and the tests on different calculation options of the IBD led to a third version of this index in June,2000 (AFNOR NF T 90-354).
