  • High-temperature design evaluations were conducted on Type 316L stainless steel piping for a 700 ℃ large-capacity thermal energy storage verification test loop (TESET) under construction at KAERI. The hot leg piping with sodium coolant at 700 ℃ connects the main components of the loop heater, hot storage tank, and air-to-sodium heat exchanger. Currently, the design rules of ASME B31.1 and RCC-MRx provide design procedures for high-temperature piping in the creep range for Type 316L stainless steel. However, the design material properties around 700 ℃ are not available in those rules. Therefore, a number of material tests, including creep tests at various temperatures, were conducted to determine the insufficient material properties and relevant design coefficients so that high-temperature design on the 700 ℃ piping may be possible. It was shown that Type 316L stainless steel can be used in a 700 ℃ high-temperature piping system of Generation IV reactor systems or a renewable energy systems, such as thermal energy storage systems, for a limited operation time.

  • This paper presents applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) energy storage batteries, while showing merits and demerits of several techniques to mitigate their electrochemical challenges. Unmanned aerial vehicles, electric cars, and grid-scale energy storage systems represent main applications of Li-S batteries due to their low cost, high specific capacity, and light weight. However, polysulfide shuttle effects, low conductivities, and low coulombic efficiencies signify key challenges of Li-S batteries, causing high volumetric changes, dendritic growths, and limited cycling performances. Solid-state electrolytes, interfacial interlayers, and electrocatalysts denote promising methods to mitigate such challenges. Moreover, nanomaterials have capability to improve kinetic reactions of Li-S batteries based on several properties of nanoparticles to immobilize sulfur in cathodes, stabilizing lithium in anodes while controlling volumetric growths. Li-S energy storage technologies are able to satisfy requirements of future markets for advanced rechargeable batteries with high-power densities and low costs, considering environmentally friendly systems based on renewable energy sources.

  • Recently, due to evolving cloud computing technology, we can easily and transparently utilize both local computing resource and remote computing resource in real life. Especially, enhancing smart device technologies and network infrastructures promote an increase of needs to share files between local smart devices and cloud storages. However, since smart devices have a limited storage space, storing files on cloud storage causes a starvation problem of local storage. It means that users can face a storage-lack problem even a cloud storage service provide a huge file storing space. In this research, we propose a method to manage files between smart devices and cloud storages. Our approach calculate file usage pattern based on recently used date, and then this approach determines local files being migrated. As a result, our approach is sufficient for handling data synchronization between big data storage farm and local thin client which contains limited storage space.

  • There are several materials for the hydrogen storage such as hydrogen storage alloy, carbon nanomaterials, non-carbon nanomaterials, compounds etc. Efficient and inexpensive hydrogen storage is an essential prerequisite for the utilization of hydrogen, one of the new and clean energy sources. Many researches have been widely performed for the hydrogen storage techniques and materials having high storage capacity and stability. In this paper, the patents concerning the carbon nanomaterial hydrogen storage method were gathered and analyzed. The search range was limited in the open patents of Korea(KR), Japan(JP), USA(US) and European Union(EP) from 1996 to 2006. Patents were gathered by using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.

  • The investment in solar and wind generation is rapidly increasing with government's renewable expansion policy and Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). Since the large penetration of solar and wind generation increases the variability and uncertainty of supply and demand balance in power system, the government is pursuing the policy of supplying energy storage system (ESS) linked to renewable energy. ESS contributes to the ease of transmission and distribution grid by shifting PV generation from daytime to evening hours. Recently, the declining market price of REC as ESS incentive, policies to cut down incentives and limited ESS storage due to fire events lead to the aggravation of long-term profitability, thus working as a barrier of ESS spreading. In this study, the factors affecting the profit of ESS are analyzed and brief indicators are derived. Based on the indicators, the profit changes are analyzed considering the variation of REC market price and REC incentive weights. Based on the profit change with respect to the increase of ESS capacity, economical ESS installation capacity is suggested.

  • Due to the highly concentrated power plants integrated through the limited transmission lines in Korea, a Special Protection System(SPS) has been applied to stabilize the power systems by instantly tripping the pre-determined generators in a large-scaled power plant when a fault occurs on the drawing transmission lines. Moreover, power outputs of those generators are constrained to avoid any activation of Under Frequency Load Shedding(UFLS) even after those generators are tripped by SPS action. For this, this paper proposes a method for calculating the required capacity of Energy Storage System(ESS) expected to relieve the operating constraints to generators using its fast response for controlling power system frequency. The proposed method uses the generator acceleration energy to derive the stable condition during the SPS action. In addition, its effectiveness is verified by the case studies adopting actual SPS operations in Korean power systems.

  • Magnesium and its alloys have the high potential as hydrogen storage materials because of their highest hydrogen storage capacity, low density and abundant resources. But poor kinetic properties of hydriding and dehydriding and high working temperature have limited their practical applications. In this study, the Mg-Ni binary alloys with different amount of Ni were produced by gravity casting and characterized in order to investigate the relationship between the microstructures and hydriding properties. The maximum hydrogen absorption capacity decreased, but the absorption kinetics increased with Ni content. The difference in the absorption kinetics was resulted from the differences in the sort and shape of primary solid phases and eutectic microstructure.

  • High temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets for large-capacity energy storage system need to be composed of toroid magnets with high energy density, low leakage magnetic fields, and easy installation. To realize such a large capacity of a toroid HTS magnet, an HTS cable with large current capacity would be preferred because of the limited DC link voltage and instantaneous high power required for compensation of the disturbance in the power grid. In this paper, the optimal operating strategies of the SMES for peak load reduction of the microgrid system were calculated according to the load variation characteristics, and the effect of compensation of the frequency change in microgrid with a SMES were also simulated. Based on the result of the simulation, key design parameters of SMES coil were presented for two cases to define the specification of the HTS cable with large current capacities for winding of HTS toroid coils, which will be need for development of the HTS cable as a future work.

  • Lairage, a part of the animal welfare practices, has been known to mitigate pre-slaughter stress in animals. However, research investigating the relationship between lairage and pork meat quality remains scarce. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of the physicochemical quality and storage stability of pork from pigs subjected to immediate slaughter (CON) and those provided with a 24 h lairage before slaughter (LRG) over a 7-day storage period. The loins from 20 castrated pigs in each group, respectively, were collected at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days and used for analysis of meat quality and storage stability, including pH, meat color, moisture, water holding capacity, drip loss, cooking loss, shear force, fatty acid composition, lipid oxidation, antioxidant activity, and electrical resistance. Overall, there were no significant differences in physicochemical meat quality parameters between CON and LRG groups. Similarly, no differences were observed in the storage stability of pork including 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and electrical resistance. However, the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids was significantly higher in LRG compared to CON. In conclusion, 24 h lairage for castrated pigs had limited impact on meat quality and storage stability but led to an increase in the unsaturated fatty acid proportion.
