Safety analysis of nuclear containment vessels subjected to strong earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis

  • Nuclear power plants under expansion and under construction in China are mostly located in coastal areas, which means they are at risk of suffering strong earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis. This paper presents a safety analysis for a new reinforced concrete containment vessel in such events. A finite element method-based model was built, verified, and first used to understand the seismic performance of the containment vessel under earthquakes with increased intensities. Then, the model was used to assess the safety performance of the containment vessel subject to an earthquake with peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.56g and subsequent tsunamis with increased inundation depths, similar to the 2011 Great East earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Results indicated that the containment vessel reached Limit State I (concrete cracking) and Limit State II (concrete crushing) when the PGAs were in a range of 0.8-1.1g and 1.2-1.7g, respectively. The containment vessel reached Limit State I with a tsunami inundation depth of 10 m after suffering an earthquake with a PGA of 0.56g. A site-specific hazard assessment was conducted to consider the likelihood of tsunami sources.

Load & Resistance Factors Calibration for Sliding and Overturning Limit State Design of Perforated Caisson Breakwater (유공케이슨 방파제 활동 및 전도 한계상태설계를 위한 하중저항계수 보정)

  • Calibration of load-resistance factors for the limit state design of perforated caisson breakwaters are presented. Reliability analysis of 12 breakwaters in nationwide ports was conducted. Then, partial safety factors and load-resistance factors were sequentially calculated according to target reliability index. Load resistance factors were optimized to give one set of factor for limit state design of breakwater. The breakwaters were redesigned by using the optimal load resistance factor and verified whether reliability indices larger than the target value. Finally, some load-resistance factors were proposed by changing target reliability index.

State-Space Analysis on The Stability of Limit Cycle Predicted by Harmonic Balance

  • In this paper, a closed-loop system constructed with a linear plant and nonlinearity in the feedback connection is considered to argue against its planar orbital stability. Through a state space approach, a main result that presents a sufficient stability criterion of the limit cycle predicted by solving the harmonic balance equation is given. Preliminarily, the harmonic balance of the nonlinear feedback loop is assumed to have a solution that determines the characteristics of the limit cycle. Using a state-space approach, the nonlinear loop equation is reformulated into a linear perturbed model through the introduction of a residual operator. By considering a series of transformations, such as a modified eigenstructure decomposition, periodic averaging, change of variables, and coordinate transformation, the stability of the limit cycle can be simply tested via a scalar function and matrix. Finally, the stability criterion is addressed by constructing a composite Lyapunov function of the transformed system.

Study on Local Buckling of District Heating Pipes Using Limit State Design (한계상태 설계법을 이용한 지역난방 열배관의 국부좌굴 연구)

  • The district heating system distributes the heat generated from a cogeneration plant to wider locations. In this process, the district heating pipe (DHP) is subjected to internal and external loadings. The internal loadings are generally caused by the operating conditions such as water temperature and internal pressure. Frictional interactions between the pipes and the soil contribute to the external loadings. Thus, investigation of the mechanisms of failure of DHPs will help to guarantee both mechanical stability and heating efficiency. In this study, we investigate the local buckling of DHPs using limit state design (LSD). Two methods are considered: the use of the limit state for the width-thickness ratio and the use of the limit state for the strain. The results are used to confirm that the DHP is stable under local buckling. Finally, we suggest a minimum preheating temperature for avoiding local buckling.

Serviceability Limit State and Response Modification Factors (기능수행수준과 응답수정계수)

  • While the Earthquake Resistant Design Part of Korean Roadway Bridge Design Code provides design procedures for the No Collapse Requirement, requirements for the Serviceability Limit State are not clearly provided. The basic design method to meet the No Collapse Requirement is the spectrum analysis method using response modification factors and the Serviceability Limit State is determined by both the importance factor and the response modification factor applied in the design procedure. The importance factor can be simply applied according to the bridge importance category, however, in moderate/low seismic regions the application of the response modification factor may bring different result according to design conditions. In this study, for a typical bridge in the moderate/low seismic regions, determination procedures for the Serviceability Limit State are reviewed by carrying out earthquake resistant design and supplementary provisions for the Earthquake Resistant Design Part are identified based on the study results.

A Study on Development of Structural Health Monitoring System for Steel Beams Using Strain Gauges (변형률계를 이용한 강재보의 건전도 평가 시스템 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed to develop a Structural Health Monitoring System for steel beams in the manner of suggesting and verifying a theoretical formula for displacement estimation using strain gauges, and estimating the loading points and magnitude. According to the results of this study, it was found that when a load of 160kN (56% of the yield load) was applied, the error rate of the deflection obtained with a strain gauge at the point of maximum deflection compared to the deflection measured with a displacement meter was within 2%, and that the estimates of the magnitude and points of load application also showed the error rate of not more than 1%. This suggests that the displacement and load of steel beams can be measured with strain gauges and further, it will enable more cost-effective sensor designing without displacement meter or load cell. The Structural Health Monitoring System program implemented in Lab VIEW gave graded warnings whenever the measured data exceeds the specified range (strength limit state, serviceability limit state, yield strain), and both the serviceability limit state and strength limit state could be simultaneously monitored with strain gauge alone.

  • A role of singletons in quantum central limit theorems is studied. A common feature of quantum central limit distributions, the singleton condition which guarantees the symmetry of the limit distributions, is revisited in the category of discrete groups and monoids. Introducing a general notion of quantum independence, the singleton independence which include the singleton condition as an extremal case, we clarify the role of singletons and investigate the mechanism of arising non-symmetric limit distributions.

Evaluation of Tunnel Face Stability with the Consideration of Seepage Forces (침투력을 고려한 토사터널 막장의 안정성 평가방법에 대한 고찰)

  • Since Broms and Bennermark(1967) suggested the face stability criterion based on laboratory extrusion tests and field observations, the face stability of a tunnel driven in cohesive material has been studied by several authors. And recently, more general solution for the tunnel front is given by Leca and Panet(1988). They adopted a limit state design concept to evaluate the face stability of a shallow tunnel driven into cohesionless material and showed that the calculated upper bound solution represented the actual behavior reasonably well. In this study, two factors are simultaneously considered for assessing tunnel face stability: One is the effective stress acting on the tunnel front calculated by upper bound solution; and the other is the seepage force calculated by numerical analysis under the condition of steady state ground water flow. The model tests were performed to evaluate the seepage force acting on the tunnel front and these results were compared with results of numerical analysis. Consequently, the methodology to evaluate the stability of a tunnel face including limit analysis and seepage analysis is suggested under the condition of steady state ground water flow.

Inelastic Behavior of Continuous Precast Composite Slabs (연속 프리캐스트 합성바닥판의 비탄성 거동)

  • A prefabricated composite hollow slab with perforated I-beams was suggested for the replacement of deteriorated concrete decks or the construction of new composite bridges with long-span slabs. Composite slabs with embedded I-beams have considerably higher stiffness and strength. For the application of prefabricated composite slabs to bridges, joints between slabs should satisfy the requirements of the ultimate limit state and the serviceability limit state. In this paper, three types of the detail for loop joints were selected and their structural performance in terms of strength and crack control was investigated through static tests on continuous composite slabs. A main parameter was the detail of the joint, such as an ordinary loop joint and loop joint with additional reinforcements. Even though there was no connection of the steel beams at the joints, the loop joints showed good performance in terms of strength. In terms of crack control, the loop joint with additional reinforcements showed better performance. In ultimate limit state, the continuous composite slabs showed good moment redistribution and ductility.

  • Steel fiber may be used to raise the effectiveness and safety of reinforced concrete structure and to relax its brittle-fracture behavior. However it is to be clearly stated that the uncertainty for the strength of fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) is rather increased. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of SFRC beam using reliability analysis incorporating realistic uncertainty. This study presents the statistical data and proposes the limit state model to analyze the reliability of SFRC bear In order to verify the efficiency of the proposed limit state model, its numerical application and sensitivity analysis were performed for a continuous SFRC beam. From the results of the numerical analysis, it is founded that the reliability of SFRC beam is significantly difficult from the conventional RC beams and proposed limit state model (or SFRC beam is more rational compared with that for conventional RC beams. Then it may be stated that the reliability analysis of SFRC beams must be carried out for the development of design criteria and the safety assessment.
