  • The regional distribution and some ecological characteristics of Chinese white-wax scale, Ericerus pela Chavannes, were investigated from 1996 to 1997. It was found that 10.8% of the stems of the privet, Ligustrum obtusifolium infested with the scale in Chtingpyijng, whereas only 1.1% of them infested in Y6ngwol and Pyongtaek. The average survival rate of the female adult marked 85.3% after it hibernated on the privet, Ligustrum obtusifolium. A female laid 7,783.5 eggs in average and 36.7% of females fell on the range of 7,000-10,000 eggs. It sized 0.40 mm in length and 0.21 mm in width. The hatchability was highest at 27$^{\circ}$C with 66.8% and it seemed the optimum temperature for incubation. The pupation rate was lower than 50.0% at the above experimental temperatures and the emergence rate marked 67.3% at 25$^{\circ}$C. When the egg was preserved at the various low temperatures, it was found that the egg could be preserved at lS$^{\circ}$C for 50 days in maximum.

  • This research is to propose a rational criterion of the selection and the management f the roadside trees, and to establish the planting design and system with the objective of improving the roadside environment. All of the roadside trees in each objective courses in Kangnung, and the soil disposition, hardness of the soil in the planting areas have been investigated. Also, we have surveyed the kinds of the trees which kandgnung inhabitants want. The conclusion is as follows Most of roadsides have trees, but they need the introduction of shrubs or ground covering plants according to the locations and the environmental conditions. We have selected nineteen species in regard to the roadside tree criterion and the growing conditions living in Kangnung. It is desirable that we make banding style planting space between each roadside tree to improve the low ratio of green coverage. We have found out that Ligustrum obtusifolium, Buxus micropnylla, Euonymus japonica, Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Phyllostachys nigro and Rosa rugosa, ect. are suitable. In order to soften and weaken the rigidity of the hard substances on a paved roadside, the climbers such as the perennial herbaceous flowering and hedera rhombea should be preferred rather than annual herbaceous flowering because of curtailment of expenditure. To posses a systematical greenery frame in kangnung, we have planned a planting design system that would expand the greenery space every year. Moreover, we have to make a plan to overcome space restrictions. We have established a flexible plan considering the roadside conditions and the improved standard planting methods with an ultimate aim to create a special roadside view.

  • This research is about analysis and evaluation of biodiversity of Suwon's street tree, then understanding the problem of it and finally finding a solution. Because the increasing damage of the street trees by disease and insects, insecticide is applied to prevent further damage. However, this insecticide is found to be cancer genic and causing hygienic threat to civilians. Therefore, by gathering Suwon's internal statistics about Suwon's street tree, the trees are divided into three categories, tall evergreen trees, deciduous trees, shrubs following Frank's 30-20-10 theory(1990). Also, according to species diversity index, the problem of disease and insect is researched in terms of biodiversity, and here we suggests solutions to counter such problems. According to the results, the trees planted in Suwon was found to be 31 families, 43 genus and 58 species. The most used kinds, almost 85% of the whole species, are found to be Rhododendron indicum (L.) Sweet, Buxus koreana Nakai ex Chung & al, Euonymus japonicus Thunb, Ligustrum obtusifolium Siebold & Zucc. Besides these, the rest of 15% of street trees had little variety. Therefore, it is necessary to plant tree variously and equally in terms of biodiversity. If this Frank's 10-20-30 solution is not enough to completely solve coulure problem, then further research will be done on soil properties, and local features for improvement of Suwon street tress.

  • The aim of this study is evaluate artificial soils which are used alone or in a blend with field soil for the greening of artificial ground. To achieve these, determination of physicochemical properties was made in four artificial media[Perlite small grain(PSG), perlite large grain(PLG), crushed porous glass+bark(AS), crushed porous glass(CPG)] used alone and/or in a blend with field soil, then evaluation of their effect on th plant growth of Ligustrum obtusifolium and Syringa vulgaris were conducted. In bulk density of root media at field capacity and the saturated hydraulic conductivity, LG and AS showed good performance. But, PLG was though to be unsuitable as artificial soil when used alone because of poor plant growth. PLG, AS, and CPG were thought to be good when it is used in a blend with field soil. But, PSG was thought to be unsuitable. In the result, PSG is recommended as artificial soil which is used alone for greening of artificial ground. PLG is recommended as artificial soil which is used in a blend with field soil. AS is recommended as artificial soil which is used alone and in a blend with field soil. Thought CPG+field soil(v/v, 1:1) might be undesirable in consideration of the chemical properties in six months after planting, it was thought to be superior to th other treatments in the plant growth. CPG can be used as artificial soil which is used in a blend with field soil. Follow-up studies are being conducted to investigate their effects on the plant growth of the other plants and the practical use of them in artificial grounds.
