This study was performed to evaluate the engineering properties of the lightweight concrete using surlightweight aggregate foaming agent and high performance agent. The following conclusions were drawn. 1. The unit weight of type A, B and C concrete was 0.912t/m$^3$, 1.592t/m$^3$ and 1.070t/m$^3$, respectively. Specially, the unit weight of type A concrete was decreased 42% than that of the type B concrete. 2. The highest engineering property was measured in the lightweight concrete using high performance agent Also, the ratio of tensile and bending strength to compresive streng-th of the lightweight concrete was higher than that of the normal cement concrete. 3. The dynamic modulus of elasticity of the lightweight concrete was in the range of 2.86 x 10 5~9.86 x 10 5 kg/cm$^2$ which was approximately 300% than that of the normal cement concrete. 4. The ultrasonic pulse velocity of the lightweight concrete was in the range 2047~3394 n/sec, which was smaller than that of the normal cement concrete.
Recent trend is to use the lightweight concrete in the construction industry because it has several advantages over normal weight concrete. The Lightweight concrete can be produced from the industrial waste materials. In South East Asian region, researchers are very keen to use the waste materials such as oil palm shell (OPS) and palm oil clinker (POC) from the palm oil producing industries. Extensive research has been done on lightweight concrete using OPS or POC over the last three decades. In this paper the aggregate properties of OPS and POC are plotted in conjunction with mechanical and structural behavior of OPS concrete (OPSC) and POC concrete (POCC). Recent investigation on the use of crushed OPS shows that OPSC can be produced to medium and high strength concrete. The density of OPSC and POCC is around 20-25% lower than normal weight concrete. Generally, mechanical properties of OPSC and POCC are comparable with other types of lightweight aggregate concrete. It can be concluded from the previous study that OPSC and POCC have the noteworthy potential as a structural lightweight concrete.
This study presents a life-cycle cost (LCC) effectiveness of a concrete with lightweight aggregate. A number of researchers have made their efforts to develop a lightweight concrete, since it is difficult to apply conventional concrete using general aggregate to heavy self-weight structures such as long span bridges. In this study, an optimum design for minimizing the life-cycle cost of concrete slab bridges is performed to evaluate the life cycle cost effectiveness of the lightweight concrete relative to conventional one from the standpoint of the value engineering. The data of physical properties for new concrete can be obtained from basic experimental researches. The material properties of conventional one are acquired by various reports. This study presents a LCC effectiveness of newly developed concrete, which is made by artificial lightweight aggregate. A number of researchers have made their efforts to develop a lightweight concrete, since it is difficult to apply conventional concrete using general aggregate to heavy self-weight structures such as long span bridges. From the results of the numerical investigation, it may be positively stated that the new concrete lead to, the longer span length, the more economical slab bridges compared with structures using general concrete.
The method used to test lightweight aggregate concrete for its resistance to freezing and thawing is different in each country. In Korea, the method of KS F 2456 on normal concrete is adopted for lightweight aggregate concrete, while the testing method of ASTM C 330 lightweight aggregates for structural concrete is used in the majority of overseas countries. In this study, we identified differences between KS F 2456 and ASTM C 330 in terms of the testing method for freezing and thawing resistance, and we studied the influence of this on the freezing and thawing resistance of lightweight aggregate concrete. The results of this study were as follows: Blocked lightweight aggregates had a slight collapse of shape and lost weight by repeated freezing and thawing, but unblocked lightweight aggregates were badly collapsed. And while the freezing and thawing resistance tests of normal concrete showed similar results despite the difference in the KS and ASTM testing method, the results for lightweight aggregate concrete were very different. So the KS test method shows evaluation results that are much lower than the ASTM test method.
In this paper, mechanical properties of the high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete with simple mixed design method was investigated. Experimental tests were performed as such compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and density of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete. The 28 days compressive strength of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete with the LC replacement ratio of $100\%$ reduces about $31\%$ but LF replacement ratio of $100\%$ increase about $20\%$ compared that of the control concrete. The structural efficiency of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete increase with proportional to the replacement into of LF. The relationship between the splitting tensile strength and 28 days compressive strength can be represented by the equation $f_s=0.076f_{ck}+0.5582$. The modulus of elasticity was found to be lower than that of normal weight concrete, ranging form 24 to 33 GPa.
Lightweight concrete is known for its advantage of reducing the self-weight of the structures, reducing the areas of sectional members as well as making the construction convenient. Thus the construction cost can be saved when applied to structures such as long-span bridge and high rise buildings. However, the lightweight concrete requires specific mix design method that is quite different from the typical concrete, since using the typical mix method would give rise the material segregation as well as lower the strength by the reduced weight of the aggregate. In order to avoid such problems, it is recommended to apply the mix design method of self-compacting concrete for the lightweight concrete. Experimental tests were performed as such compressive strength, dry shrinkage and carbonation of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete.
The ultra-lightweight high strength polymer concrete could be used for the drain structures under severe condition. In this study, materials used were unsaturated polyester resin, heavy calcium carbonate, artificial lightweight coarse aggregate and perlite. In the test results, the unit weight of the ultra-lightweight high strength polymer concrete was 946 kg f/$\textrm{m}^3$ and the compressive strength was appeared in 34.5 MPa. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, acid resistance and weather resistance were shown in excellently than that of the normal cement concrete. The draining trench had 1m length, 0.24 m width, 0.02 m thickness and 0.07 m height. The developed trench could be effectively used at the draining structures.
The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental data on chloride diffusion from lightweight aggregate concrete by utilizing crushed stone-powder. Accordingly, the study performed experiments using concrete aggregates of Crushed Aggregate (CG), Single-sized Lightweight Aggregate (SLG), Continuous Graded Lightweight Aggregate (CLG), and using water-binder ratio of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and using binder of FA and BFS. The chloride diffusion coefficient is calculated after experiment based on NT BUILD 492. Diffusion coefficient of SLG and CLG were little bit higher than CG Concrete, but the difference is meaningless. Also, chloride diffusion coefficient indicates that it is highly affected by water-binder ratio, and it decreases with the decrease in water-binder ratio. The admixture substitution indicates decrease only with water-binder ratio of 0.4 for FA15% case, but admixture substitution indicates decrease with all levels of ratio for FA10 + BFS20% which means more appropriate. According to the analysis result of chloride diffusion from lightweight aggregate concrete, crushed stone-powder utilized lightweight aggregate concrete indicates higher chloride diffusion coefficient than CG concrete, which is not a significant difference, and can improve resistance through water-binder ratio and admixture substitution.
Recent advance in material technology has accelerated the development of high strength concrete using lightweight artificial aggregates. The lightweight concrete has many advantages that the reduction of dead lads and the increase in load capacity can ofter. In this study, lightweight polymer concrete using unsaturated polyester resin and lightweight aggregate were prepared and tested for testing the physical and the mechanical properties. The compressive strengths of lightweight polymer concretes with specific gravities from 1.32 to 1.78 were compressive strength of 250 to 470 $kgf/cm^2$ and flexural strengths were measured to be in the range of a third to a quarter of compressive strength
