  • In this paper, we introduce the design consideration of the lightning induced transient protection circuit for the indirect lightning strike on the avionics equipment. The lightning induced surge voltage, which is so-called as indirect effects of lightning, may cause a functional failure or physical damage to the electrical and electronic equipment of aircraft. In order to protect the electrical and electronic equipment of aircraft from the indirect effects of lightning, we should analyze the effect of lightning strike on aircraft and consider applying protection design for each avionics device. However, lightning induced transient protection circuits can have unintended consequences because parasitic inductance elements are exist in PCB and TVS diodes. In this paper, we introduce the design method of the protection circuit considering the parasitic inductance of the protection circuit. In addition, we show the result of verification test performed to validate the protection circuits for indirect effects of lightning.

  • Surges generated by direct strike or induction of lightning, frequent opening and closing of power system breakers, etc. cause excessive overvoltage, which can interfere with normal operation of transformers, circuit breakers, and power equipment. In order to prevent such phenomena, this study goes further from the method of establishing countermeasures by installing lightning arresters on power equipment or lines in parallel, and furthermore, remotely checking the condition of the lightning arrester and preparing immediate countermeasures when an event occurs. The purpose of the study is to prevent damage in advance.

  • Nanoparticles-coated and impact-damaged carbon-fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) laminates were tested under compression-after-impact(CAI) mode and the propagation of damage due to compressive loading has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE). The impact damage was induced not by mechanical loading but by a simulated lightning strike. CFRP laminates were made of carbon prepregs prepared by coating of conductive nano-particles directly on the fibers and the coupons were subjected to simulated lightning strikes with a high voltage/current impulse of 10~40 kA within a few microseconds. The effects of nano-particles coating and the degree of damage induced by the simulated lightning strikes on the AE activities were examined, and the relationship between the compressive residual strength and AE behavior has been evaluated in terms of AE event counts and the onset of AE activity with the compressive loading. The degree of impact damage was also measured in terms of damage area by using ultrasonic C-scan images. From the results assessed during the CAI tests of damaged CFRP showed that AE monitoring appeared to be very useful to differentiate the degree of damage hence the mechanical integrity of composite structures damaged by lightning strikes.

  • In this paper, we introduce the design consideration of the EMI and lightning induced transient protection circuit for RS-170a video signal on the avionics equipment. Avionics equipment is subject to the risk of malfunction or physical damage due to indirect lightning effect from lightning strike or electromagnetic interference from external environment. So in order to protect the avionics equipment from these effects, we should analyze the effect of electromagnetic interference and lightning strike on aircraft and apply protection design for each avionics device, but protection circuit may cause signal distortion if signal level is low and frequency is high. In this paper, we introduce common protection design for EMI and indirect lightning effect, and consideration for minimize signal distortion caused by protection circuit for RS-170a. In addition, we show some example of improvements to the actual equipment design using consideration discussed in this paper.

  • The interactions of natural atmospheric electricity with aircraft reveals many flight safety problems. It is estimated that on average, each commercial airplane is struck by lightning more than once each year. Thus the lightning strike to aircarft poses an appreciable threat to flight safety. Upset or damage of electrical and electronics equipment by the induced voltages is defined as indirect effect. The protection of aircraft electronics from the indirect effects of lightning can be accomplished first by determining the specific threats to the aircraft and systems contained within, and second, by designing protection methods to the aircraft components.

  • About 70% of Korea consists of mountainous areas, and during the construction of many roads and railroads, cut slopes are inevitably formed. The rainy season, frost heaving in winter, and thawing in spring can all cause rockfalls and landslides. The failure of these slopes is increasing every year, causing damage to vehicles, personal injury and even death. To protect people and property from such damage, a real-time monitoring system is needed to detect the early stages of slope failures. The GMG placed TRS sensor units in the slopes to monitor them in real-time. But due to its reliance on data lines and power lines, the system is vulnerable to lightning damage. The whole system can be damaged by a single lighting strike. Consequently, for the purposes of this paper we propose the use of the Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) which follows the IEEE 802.1.4. By using the USN system we can minimize lightning damage and can monitor the movement of the slopes consistently.

  • This paper looks into the field inside the wide rectangular box structure that is excited by the High Power Electromagnetic(HPEM) source as a potential threat to electric grid and communication networks causing malfunction or destruction. The rectangular box is assumed power/ground planes and its internal field is calculated by the cavity model with the lightning strike excitation as an HPEM pulse. The accuracy of the calculation method employed here is validated through a $156mm{\times}106mm{\times}508{\mu}m$ parallel metallic plate case which is manufactured and tested, and is applied to the size of a building. With the help of the cavity model that takes into account loading, the level of the electric field is shown to decrease when a metal pillar is loaded between the power and ground planes.

  • Recently, due to global warming, the trend shows an increase in number of lightning strikes which increase risk regarding industry infrastructures. Especially in case where the lightning strikes infrastructures including refinery, petorchemical plant facilities or storage tanks, it can cause power failures, electrical machine malfunction and damage which can lead to fire explosion and multiple calamities. Therefore, detailed case studies must be conducted through a systematic research regarding lightning strike accidents in order to understand its mechanism and devise preventive measures. This paper aims to study cases of explosion regarding waste water storage tanks in refineries and petrochemical plants in order to analyze its root cause and provide preventive measures for avoiding lightning related incidents.

In order to overcome this, GMG have proposed the use of Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USN). The adoption of a USN system in lieu of data cables can help to minimize the risk of lightning damage and improve the reliability of slope monitoring systems.

  • Demand for UAM (Urban Air Mobility) aircraft is rapidly increasing in countries around the world due to the problem of traffic congestion in urban areas. Through research and development, various e-VTOL aircraft concepts are being prepared for commercialization, for which airworthiness certification is required, since it is a manned transportation mode for people to board. Factors that pose a fatal threat to the safe operation of UAM aircraft include lightning strikes that can cause damage to structures and disturb the navigation system, as well as icing that impairs flight stability. Since the current UAM aircraft-related lightning and icing certification technology development is insufficient, there is need to develop appropriate airworthiness certification guidelines. In this study, after analyzing the laws and regulations related to aircraft by the FAA and the EASA, we tried to incorporate the lightning and icing certification guidelines for the UAM aircraft. We also analyzed the effects of lightning and icing on UAM aircraft using computational simulation, and presented the basis for establishing practical guidelines for the certification of UAM aircraft to be adopted in the future.
