Insulation Design and Reliability Evaluation of ±80kV HVDC XLPE Cables

  • This paper describes insulation design and its reliability evaluation of ${\pm}80kV$ HVDC XLPE cable. Recently, the construction of HVDC transmission system, which is combined overhead line with underground cable, has been completed. This system is installed with existing 154 kV AC transmission line on the same tower. In this paper, the lightning transient analysis is firstly reviewed for selection of basic impulse insulation level and nominal insulation thickness. Then the electrical performance tests including load cycle test and superimposed impulse test based on CIGRE TB 496 are performed to evaluate the reliability of newly designed HVDC cable. There is no breakdown for ${\pm}80kV$ HVDC XLPE cable during electrical performance test. Finally, this system is installed in Jeju island based on successful electrical performance test (Type test). After installation tests are also successfully completed.

  • In this work, in order to investigate the effect of multiple lightning impulse currents on zinc oxide arrester blocks. We have been designed and fabricated a multi-impulse generator which can produce quintuple voltages with $1.2/50{\mu}s$ to 100kV and quintuple currents with $8/20{\mu}s$ to 12kA and we have evaluated the characteristics of zinc oxide arrester block using several electrical and physical methods after the multi-impulse test. It was found that the multi-impulse failures of ZnO arrester blocks were mainly caused by surface flashover and the multi-impulse currents test would be more suitable than single impulse current test in evaluation of the characteristics of zinc oxide arrester blocks corresponding to actual situations.

Discharge Characteristics in Soils Subjected to Lightning Impulse Voltages

  • In this paper, we present experimental results of the soil discharge characteristics as a function of moisture content when a 1.2/50-㎲ lightning impulse voltage is applied. For this study, laboratory experiments were carried out based on factors affecting the transient behavior in soils. The electrical breakdown voltages in soils were measured for a 0-6% range of moisture content for sand and a 0 - 4% range of moisture content for gravel. A test cell with semi-spherical electrodes buried face-to-face in the middle of a cylindrical container was used. The distance separating the electrodes is 100 mm. As a result, the time-lag to breakdown in soils decreases as the amplitude of applied voltage increases. The time-lag to initiation of ionization streamer is decreased, with an increase in the moisture content. However, the formative time-lag is rarely changed. The behavior of soil discharges depend not only on the type of soil and its moisture content but also on the amplitude of the impulse voltage. When the test voltage is applied repeatedly, electrical breakdown occurs along different discrete paths, leading radially away from the injected electrode. i.e., the fact that the ionization streamers propagate in different paths from shot to shot was observed.

  • V-p characteristics and the discharge luminous characteristics in inhomogeneous $SF_6$ gas gap under the positive and negative lightning impulse voltages are presented. The test gap was composed of the plane-to-plane with a needle-shaped protrusion. The applied voltage and the predischarge current were measured by the electric field sensor and the shunt of 50 ${\Omega}$, respectively. The light emission signals were observed by a photomultiplier tube, and a high-speed camera. In a consequence, the dielectric strengths of $SF_6$ gas gap under positive lightning impulse voltages were independent of the gas pressure. In the presence of the positive polarity, the branches of discharge channel were created and the directions of the discharge paths were random. On the other hands, the discharge paths of the negative polarity were more thicker and brighter.

A Numerical Approach for Lightning Impulse Flashover Voltage Prediction of Typical Air Gaps

  • This paper proposes a numerical approach to predict the critical flashover voltages of air gaps under lightning impulses. For an air gap, the impulse voltage waveform features and electric field features are defined to characterize its energy storage status before the initiation of breakdown. These features are taken as the input parameters of the predictive model established by support vector machine (SVM). Given an applied voltage range, the golden section search method is used to compute the prediction results efficiently. This method was applied to predict the critical flashover voltages of rod-rod, rod-plane and sphere-plane gaps over a wide range of gap lengths and impulse voltage waveshapes. The predicted results coincide well with the experimental data, with the same trends and acceptable errors. The mean absolute percentage errors of 6 groups of test samples are within 4.6%, which demonstrates the validity and accuracy of the predictive model. This method provides an effectual way to obtain the critical flashover voltage and might be helpful to estimate the safe clearances of air gaps for insulation design.

  • This paper represents the development of national standard (NS) for lightning impulse (LI) voltage measuring system rated 400 kV. A traceability of the NS to the international standard could be achieved by the intercomparison test with Helsinki University. According to the IEC 60060-2, a measurement uncertainty was assessed. As a result of the tests, a measurement uncertainty and step response characteristics were satisfied with the requisite for NS.

  • This paper presents a technical study for the first short stroke lightning current generator using a crowbar device. The so-called crowbar-technology is most common to make 10/350[${\mu}s$] impulse currents with high amplitude, and the lightning current generator with crowbar device has an economic advantage than the nominal RLC current generator. But both the operating efficiency and the operating reliability of crowbar spark gap are very important to design the current generator. So, the peaking circuit which consists of small capacitors and a spark gap is applied. And the multi-step coil for controlling the circuit constant at the different test conditions is used. The presented test facility is designed to perform impulse tests with amplitudes up to 50[kA] of 10/350[${\mu}s$].

  • This paper presents leakage current characteristics as a function of injected number and magnitude of impulse current, when$8/20{\mu}s$ lightning impulse current is injected to ZnO varistor. The life of ZnO varistor against $8/20{\mu}s$ lightning impulse current was evaluated. The injected number of the test current to breakdown was inversely proportional to the amplitude of impulse current.

  • The overvoltage generated by the lightning strokes has been doing considerable damage to the distribution network as well as the consumer facility until now. Because most of the lightning strokes are accompanied by a storm, the aftermath of damage to the consumer is so serious. Therefore it is very important to survey the optimal operation plan by the field test of distribution lightning facilities. In this paper we have accomplished the field test to verify the impulse characteristic of Secondary Arrester(SA), and analyzed the effect of the SA in power distribution system.

$SF_6-N_2$ 혼합가스에서 과도임펄스전압에 대한 V-t특성 (V-t Characteristics in $SF_6-N_2$ Mixtures for Transient Impulse Voltages)

  • In this paper, breakdown voltages in $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures were experimentally investigated to understand characteristics of dielectric strength and physical phenomena in nonuniform field disturbed by a needle shape protrusion. The test voltages are the lightning impulse$(\pm1.2/44 \mus)$ and the damped oscillatory impulse$(\pm400 ns / 0.83 MHz)$ voltages which can be occurred by the operation of disconnecting switches in gas-insulated switchgears(GIS). The effects of the polarity and wave shape of the test voltages, and the gas pressure on the V-t characteristics were in detail examined. The V-t characteristic curves were measured in different two ways : (1) one is the method by taking the maximum voltage recorded at or prior to breakdown against the time to breakdown, that is, the Procedures recommended in IEC 60060-1, (2) the other is the method by taking the voltage at the instant of chopping against the time to breakdown. As a result, the V-t characteristics of $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures in nonuniform electric field were significantly affected by the polarity and wave shape of the applied voltages. The positive breakdown voltages resulted in lower breakdown voltages in the time ranges considered, and the V-t curves for the negative oscillatory impulse voltage were extended over the longer time range. For the lightning impulse voltages, the V-t curves obtained by IEC Pub. 60060-1 were nearly same with the V-t curves obtained by the voltage at the instant of chopping against the time to breakdown. It is clear that the actual breakdown voltages were much lower than the maximum voltages appearing at or prior to breakdown because of the displacement current produced as a result of the dV/dt during the oscillatory transient voltage app1ication. The scattering of the negative actual breakdown voltages was much larger than that of the positive.
