Lightning impulse voltage is essential to evaluate the insulation performance of electric power apparatus. Recently international standard (IEC-60) on high voltage measurement techniques are being revised. In the draft of this standard, a new calibration method is introduced and the accuracy of most industrial measuring systems is maintained by means of comparison test against the reference measuring systems. Comparison tests of dividers for chopped lightning impulse measurement were rallied out by KERI. The 700kV shielded resisitive divider with and without compensation element were done comparison test with 300kV PTB divider which have the similar charateristics as that were circulated among the laboratories. This paper reports on the calculation results of response charateristics obtained by EMTP and the comparison test results with chopped lightning impulse voltages from 150kV to 250kV. It is demonstrated that KERI are capable of realizing the idea in the revision of the IEC standand, that is, to establish traceability.
This paper presents the development technology of standard resistor divider for full lightning impulse voltage. The ability of high voltage bulk power equipment to withstand lighting stroke is usually evaluated by means of full lightning impulse voltage. Lightning impulse voltage test has been essential to evaluate the insulation performance of electrical power apparatus. Recently International standard (IEC 60) on high voltage measurement techniques is being revised and requests a formal traceability of high voltage measurements. Therefore, general interest for this area has grown considerably during last years, and several international intercomparisions have been completed already worldwide, i.e. Europe, Japan, America etc.. In this viewpoint, we have also investigated the standard resistor divider with shield, which satisfies the IEC recommendation.
To evaluate the change in protective levels of zinc oxide (ZnO) varistors after the surge absorption, this paper investigated the effects of the number of injection and amplitude of lightning surges on the life of ZnO varistors for low voltages. Leakage currents flowing through ZnO varistors subjected to the $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents under 60 Hz AC voltages were measured. The surge simulator system ECAT that can generate $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents with a peak short-circuit of 5 $[kA_p]$ was used. The ZnO varistor leakage current increases with exposure to impulse current, and the number of injection of $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents to breakdown was inversely proportional to the amplitude of the test current. Behaviors of ZnO varistor leakage currents were strongly dependent on the number of injection and amplitude of $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents. ZnO varistors degrade gradually when subjected to impulse current, and the resistive leakage current flowing through ZnO varistors subjected to the $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents under 60 Hz AC voltages was significantly increased after a certain number of injection that is dependent on the amplitude of the test impulse current. As a result, the life of ZnO varistors mainly depends on the amplitude and occurrence frequency of lightning surges.
This paper describes the series-gap characteristics of transmission line arrester with switching and lightning impulse flashover test. The transmission line arrester exhibited external gap because it is must not flashover with switching impulse on the other hand it is must flashover with lightning impulse. In accordance, minimum and maximum length of series-gap was determinated with these tests. As gap length is increased flashover voltage was increased in the range of 315.4 kV~496.3 kV and negative polarity exhibited a high voltage. As a result, It was thought tat the series-gap length of transmission line arrester exhibited in the range of 580 mm~1100 mm.
This paper deals with the change of the micro-structure of ZnO associated with lightning surge current and ageing test. In this work, a surge current generator which can produce 8/20 [${\mu}s$], 6 [kA] impulse current is designed and fabricated to simulate the lightning impulse current. The residual voltage and leakage current flowing to ZnO blocks are observed. Also a compensation circuit was used in resistive current measurement. The micro-structures of ZnO arrester block were significantly changed by lightning surge current and accelerated temperature ageing test.
This Impulse Voltage and Current Test System is designed for performing of impulse voltage tests with Lightning impulse voltage 1.2/50(LI) up to 1520kV peak value and switching impulse voltages 250/2500(SI) up to 1120kV peak valu acc. to IEC 60060-1, and furthermore for impulse current test, e.g. testing of arrester sections($U_{res}$=95kV)with current impulses 4/10 and 8/20 up to 70kA peak value.

This paper presents development of solid core suspension disc insulators (cap and cap suspension disc insulator) for replacing cap and pin suspension disc insulators in overhead transmission and distribution lines which expose to lightning discharges. By this means the punctured problem caused by steep front surge voltage created by lightning discharge on the lines can be solved. The solid core suspension insulator was designed and constructed based on the dimensions of conventional suspension disc insulators (cap and pin insulators). The insulators are made of alumina porcelain. The electrical and mechanical characteristics of the solid core suspension insulators were carried out. The puncture test was performed in the air by applying steep front impulse voltage with amplitude about 2.5 per unit of 50% flashover (CFO) of the insulator unit at negative standard lightning impulse $1.2/50\;\mu\textrm{s}$ with steepness up to $9200\;kV/\mu\textrm{s}$. The testing results show that solid core suspension disc insulators are not punctured eventhough the steepness of the steep front impulse voltage was increased up to $9200\;kV/\mu\textrm{s}$.
This paper presents design parameter calculation methodology and its realization to construction for the 10/350${\mu}s$ lightning impulse current generator(ICG) modelled as double exponential function waveform with characteristic parameters ${\alpha},{\beta}$. Matlab internal function, "fzero" was applied to find ${\lambda}={\alpha}/{\beta}$ which is solution of nonlinear equation linearly related with two wave parameter $T_1$ and $T_2$. The calculation results for 10/350${\mu}s$ lightning impulse current show very good accuracy with error less 0.03%. Two type of 10/350${\mu}s$ ICGs based on the calculated design circuit parameters were fabricated by considering the load variation. One is applicable to the MOV based Surge protective device(SPD) for less 15 kA and the other is to test small resistive devices such as spark gap arrester and bonding device with maximum current capability 30 kA. The tested waveforms show error within 10% in comparison with the designed estimation and the waveform tolerance recommended in the IEC 61643-1 and IEC 60060-1.
In this work, in order to investigate the effect of lightning impulse currents on ZnO surge arrester. and the deterioration characteristics of ZnO surge arrester, 8/20 [${\mu}s$], 2.5 [kA] impulse currents were applied to the ZnO surge arrester under test. The leakage currents of ZnO surge arrester were measured and ZnO element was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a result, the resistive leakage current of ZnO surge arrester was increased with the injection number of lightning impulse currents.
