  • This paper presents the behaviors of transient and effective impulse impedances of a long ground rod associated with the current injection points. The laboratory test for the time domain performance of actual-sized model ground rod subjected to a lightning stroke current has been carried out The transient ground impedances of long ground rods under impulse currents were higher than the ground resistance. Both of the ground resistance and the effective impulse ground impedance decrease with increasing the length of the ground rods. Also, the effective impulse ground impedances are significantly increased in fast rise time ranges. The reduction of the ground resistance is decisive to improve the impulse impedance characteristics of grounding systems. When the test current is injected at the bottom of ground rod, the oscillating pulses with high frequency are included on the wave front of ground rod potential and the effective impulse impedances are higher than any other cases.

  • Arresters are the best protective device on electrical power systems against transient overvoltages generated by lightning and/or switching operation. Nonetheless, arresters are deteriorated by absorption of moisture in the environments of its use, repetition in the protective operation to overvoltages, and some defects at manufacturing. It is therefore important to estimate the electrical characteristic changes of ZnO blocks. In this paper, an accelerated ageing test by a standard lightning impulse current was carried out to extract parameters needed for arrester diagnosis, and leakage current components were measured. Total energy applied to the ZnO blocks at each time is about 1,050[J] in 8/20[${\mu}\textrm{s}$] impulse current. From the experimental results, we proposed electrical parameters and leakage current level to diagnose arrester soundness.

  • Recently, researchers have become interested in natural ester fluids, as they are an environmentally friendly alternative to mineral oils. Natural ester fluids are a natural resource made from plants; they have higher biodegradability, flash, and fire points, and a greater permittivity compared to conventional mineral oils. However, natural ester fluids also have a higher pour point, viscosity, and water content. These characteristics can hamper circulation and impair the electrical properties of an oil-filled transformer. A large amount of data has been accumulated over the years in regards to mineral insulating oil involving dielectric breakdown voltage and lightning impulse tests. However, natural ester fluids have not had their electrical properties sufficiently characterized. In this paper, we present an investigation into the characteristics of the electrical discharge development in natural ester fluids and in an oil-filled transformer near the pour points. The experiment results show that the electrical properties decreased according to a decrease in the ambient temperature and freezing time. It was found that the pour point and water content of natural ester fluids have a significant effect on the electrical properties.

  • Impulse characteristic of transmission tower grounding grid is needed for lightning protection of transmission line. This paper describes an outdoor experimental test facility established for large-scale grounding grid of transmission tower, made up of four impulse current generators and a circle current return electrode. The amplitude of impulse current is up to 100 kA. The results of the CDEGS simulation and GPR measurement reveal the uniform current distribution in the test arrangement. An impulse test for a square electrode with extended conductors is carried out in condition of three current waveforms with different amplitude. Based on the electrical network model and iterative algorithm method, a calculation model is proposed to simulate the impulse characteristic of large-scale grounding grid considering soil ionization. The curve of impulse resistance against the current amplitude shows the soil ionization both from the simulation and test. Deviation between the simulation and test result is less than 15%.

  • This paper presents the soil ionization phenomena and the parameters with the transient characteristics of model grounding system under lightning impulse voltages. lonization properties of dry and wet sands were investigated by using two test cells of concentric cylindrical electrode system with different dimensions. As a result non-linear electrical behavior of sand under high impulse voltage is caused by ionization process. The transient impedance of sand depends not only on the water content but also on the magnitude of applied impulse voltages. The grounding impedance is decreased with increasing the water content and the magnitude of a lied voltages. The results resented in this paper will provide useful information on the design of high performance grounding systems against lightning surge.

  • It is important that study on cryogenic electrical insulation design to develop the cold dielectric(CD) type HTS cable because the cable is operated under the high voltage environment in cryogenic temperature. This paper proposes two types of insulation design to carry out the maximum insulation design for 154 kV-class HT cable. The proposed insulation design method takes into consideration AC and lightning impulse withstand voltage so as to prevent AC breakdown for power frequency operating voltage during operating the cable and breakdown for lightning impulse voltage. The final insulation thickness is determined by selecting high value out of two insulation thickness calculated through the two insulation design methods. And we researched electrical insulation characteristics of HTS cable according to bending ratio and the number of bending.

  • There are claims that ESE(Early streamer emission) Air terminals offer a vastly increased zone of protection over that of traditional lightning rods by causing the emission of an upward streamer/leader that will propagate towards the tip of downward leader at an early stage in the attachment process than would occur for a simple rod in the same geometrical configurations. This paper shows the results of comparing test a particular type of ESE air terminals with a simple rod conducted in the KEH HV laboratory, which are lightning impulse voltage test, flashover direction test and corona emission current measurement. The results from this test show a completely random scattering of flashovers to the conventional and ESE air terminals under identical electrics] and geometrical conditions, and thus shows no advantage of one terminal over the other.

  • Porcelain insulators are typically exposed to surface discharge and lightning impulse in service. This study investigates the insulation characteristics of the external and internal discharges of a porcelain insulator with respect to its flashover for a 154 kV transmission line. The experiments are also conducted using a wet flashover test and an impulse test based on the external discharge and the internal penetration, to classify the flashover voltage-time curve of the porcelain insulator. When an impulse with a strength of 2,500 kV/㎲ was applied three times to 6.5 mm ceramic samples, electrical penetration of approximately 70% occurred. The impulse experiment confirmed that the electrical penetration inside the porcelain insulator coincided with the area where the electric field was concentrated. The wet flashover voltage test revealed that the flashover threshold voltage increases by approximately 7% after cleaning of the surface.

  • ZnO varistor for transmission class arrester$({\Phi}65{\times}20mm)$ of 10kA(Class 3) grade was recently developed in korea and is tested for the properties by switching surge operating duty test to know the line discharge class and complex surge property in electric properties. To find out changing rate of residual voltage before and after lightning impulse residual voltage testing, the sample is cool to room temperature after finishing switching surge operating duty test, and the rate is good as 1.0~1.7%. The element had been considered as applicable ZnO varistor for electricity transmission from the test results of state conterl, switching surge operating duty, thermal stability and above test. But various test should be required for actual application because this is a part of the to be needed for application.

  • Modern electronic circuits are becoming more vulnerable to damage by surges, and it is required to improve the impulse withstand voltage performance of electrical and electronic equipment. This paper presents the impulse withstand voltage performance of lighting equipment connected to power lines, and the impulse withstand voltage tests for fluorescent lamp, LED lamp and halogen lamp were carried out according to the reference standards under normal service conditions. To conduct performance tests against lightning surge, a combination wave ($1.2/50{\mu}s$ voltage - $8/20{\mu}s$ current) was employed. The test surge was applied between lines or between line and ground of the specimen to be measured. The test surge was applied synchronized at the peak value of the positive and negative AC voltage waves. As a consequence, some specimens satisfied the impulse withstand voltage test criteria, but lighting equipment such as 36W fluorescent lamps, 5W and 5.5W LED lamps and 50W halogen lamp were damaged at the test voltage levels between power lines. It is needed to improve the qualities of lighting equipment to satisfy EMC immunity requirements of equipment for general lighting purposes.
