In an electric substation, there are many sources of surge such as switching operations or lightning strokes. A grounding system submitted to such surge current presents very different behaviour from the observed under low frequency current. Especially, it has been reported that significant overvoltage occurs at the current feed-in point, and this may cause damages to other grounded components in the substation area. This paper describes the basic mechanism of improvement of grouding performance in transient state with auxiliary grounding grids.

Most adjustable-speed drives (ASDs) designed to operate low voltage induction motors incorporate voltage-source inverters (VSIs), which create motor voltages at high switching frequencies. The motor leads used to connect an ASD to a motor can behave like transmission lines for voltage pulses, which can be reflected at the motor terminals. The resulting oscillatory transient, known as the long-lead effect, can stress and consequently degrade the stator insulation system of a motor. This paper describes the results of tests to 1) determine the correlation between peak motor voltage and the length of motor leads and 2) determine the correlation between peak motor voltage and the switching frequency of the ASD Insulation failures like this usually are caused by voltage surges. Voltage surges are often the result of switching power circuits, lightning strikes, capacitor discharges and solid-state power devices.
The distributed jointing method is used in the underground tunnel due to narrow space of jointing. This method causes non-uniform length between cable joints. It has an effect on the sheath circulating current and the induced voltage. Furthermore the distributed jointing method may cause transient overvoltage resulting from lightning in underground cable which is connected with overhead line. The author diversely studied the sheath circulating current and induced voltage on underground cable depending on the distributed jointing length under the normal and the transient circumstances. The various simulation results really improve the cable system utility.
This paper deals with the two stage surge protection device by using varistor and LC low pass filter. Recently varistor alone has been used with overvoltage protection devices for the AC power mains and has same problems associated with high remnant voltage and noise. In this work, in order to improve the cutoff performance of surge protection device, the lightning surge protection device having two stage hybrid circuit for an AC single phase mains was designed and fabricated. Operation characteristics and surge clamping performance of the surge protection device in an $8/20{\mu}s$ surge current are investigated. As a consequence, it is found that the proposed two stage surge protective device for AC power mains has a variety of advantages such as a smaller clamping voltage, high frequency noise reduction and large clamping capacity.
An electrical railway system uses high voltage system for train traction and low voltage system for train control. Railway systems are broadly distributed across mountains, sea sides and cities. Electrical accidents provoke the death and injury of a human being and the damage of the equipment by the overcurrent due to the catenary dropping and by the overvoltage due to lightning. Grounding systems are adopted for the protections of the system from the overcurrent and the overvoltage. Isolation grounding for each system can be easily installed. However, the closed circuits between grounding systems can be occurred. The currents flow through the closed circuits cause the abnormal operation of the system. To overcome the problem of the isolation grounding, the equipotential bonding is usually adopted. The equipotential bonding should have very small grounding resistance. In this paper, we showed the transition from the isolation grounding system to the common grounding system and presented the comparison and the analysis of two grounding systems by simulation. In addition, we proposed the direction for a new grounding system of electric railway.

The main objective of this paper is to module design and pressure relief test a new type of polymer gapless surge arrester for power distribution line. Metal oxide surge arrester for most electric power system applications, power distribution line and electric train are now being used extensively to protect overvoltage due to lightning. Surge arresters with porcelain housing must not have explosive breakage of the housing to minimize damage to other equipment when subjected to internal high short circuit current. When breakdown of gapless elements in a surge arrester occurs due to flashover, fault short current flows through the arrester and internal pressure of the arrester rises. The pressure rise can usually be limited by fitting a pressure relief diaphragm and transferring the arc from the inside to the outside of the housing. However, there is possibility of porcelain fragmentation caused by the thermal shock, pressure rise, etc. Non-fragmenting of the housing is the most desired way to prevent damage to other equipment. The pressure change which is occurred by flashover become discharge energy. This discharge energy raises to damage arrester housing and arrester housing is dispersed as small fragment. Therefore, the pressure relief design is requested to obstruct housing dispersion.

A Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891. It is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high frequency alternating-current electricity. Tesla coil can generate a long streamer with several million volts of electricity as a high voltage device. It is basically consists of a voltage transformer, high voltage capacitor, spark gap, primary coil, secondary coil and toroid. It is difficult to appear in the output size of the streamer is controlled by the spark gap. The general decision method of the length of streamer is to display the electric output in accordance with the design specifications in initial development plan. Design specifications and the electric output is determined by the application of facilities. In this paper the spark gap is replaced with periodic switching semiconductor device to control output voltage easily in order to apply overvoltage protective circuit due to a secondary coil and a performance test. In these days, their main use is for entertainment and educational displays of the museum, although small coils are still used as leak detectors for high vacuum systems.
This paper deals with the lightning surge protective devices with combination of varistor and LC filter. UP to now, the varistor alone were used as overvoltage protection devices fer the AC power mains. In this work, in order to improve the cutoff performance of surge protective device, the hybrid circuit surge protective device for an AC single phase mains was designed and investigated. The first stage of hybrid circuit is to remove most of any large surge energy and protect the second stage components. The purpose of the second is to protect the load and increase the cutoff capacity of surge protective devices. Also LC filter attenuates the remnant that travels downstream from the first stage component and the high frequency noises. As a consequence, it was found that the proposed hybrid surge protective device for AC power mains has a variety of advantages such as low and tight clamping voltage, high frequency noise reduction and large cutoff capacity.

The purpose of this study is to find the causes of malfunctions and defective operation of printed circuit boards(PCBs) built into home refrigerators to perform power saving functions. This study performed an electrostatic test of a PCB built-in using an Auto Triggering system; lightning and impulse tests using an LSS-15AX; and an impulse test using an INS-400AX. From the analysis of a secondarily developed product, it was found that electrostatic discharge(ESD) caused more malfunctions and defective operations than electric overstress(EOS) due to overvoltage. As a result of increasing the condenser capacity of the PCB circuit, withstanding voltage was increased to 7.4 kV. In addition, this study changed the power saving mode and connected a varistor to the #2 pin of an IC chip. As a result, the system consisting of all specimens of a finally developed product was operated stably with an applied voltage of less than 10 kV. This study found it necessary to perform quality control at the manufacturing stage in order to reduce the occurrence of electrostatic accidents to IC chips built into a PCB.
