  • We investigated the effect of monochromatic light emitting diode (LED) on the growth of diatoms Nitzschia sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema sp. and green algae Chlorella vulgaris. The four microalgae species were cultured under blue LED (450 nm), yellow LED (590 nm), red LED (650 nm) and fluorescent lamp (mixed wavelengths). The maximum growth rates and cell densities of Nitzschia sp., P. tricornutum and Skeletonema sp. were highest under blue LED, followed by fluorescent lamp, red LED and then yellow LED, however those of C. vulgaris were highest under red LED. This result indicates that blue LED is favorable for the growth of diatoms. Thus, the growth of microalgae under monochromatic light might be species-specific or taxon-specific. Also, these results could be used as an important information in future for remediation of heavy metal contamination in the sediments using LED and microalgae.

  • Recombinant Rhodopseudomonas palustris, harboring the carotenoid-metabolizing gene crtI (CrtIBS), and whose color changes from greenish yellow to red in response to inorganic As(III), was cultured in transparent microplate wells illuminated with a light emitting diode (LED) array. The cells were seen to grow better under near-infrared light, when compared with cells illuminated with blue or green LEDs. The absorbance ratio of 525 to 425 nm after cultivation for 24 h, which reflects red carotenoid accumulation, increased with an increase in As(III) concentrations. The detection limit of cultures illuminated with near-infrared LED was 5 ${\mu}g$/l, which was equivalent to that of cultures in test tubes illuminated with an incandescent lamp. A near-infrared LED array, in combination with a microplate, enabled the simultaneous handling of multiple cultures, including CrtIBS and a control strain, for normalization by the illumination of those with equal photon flux densities. Thus, the introduction of a near-infrared LED array to the assay is advantageous for the monitoring of arsenic in natural water samples that may contain a number of unknown factors and, therefore, need normalization of the reporter event.

  • The antimicrobial properties of Light-Emitting Diode (LED) are an area of increasing interest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bactericidal effects of blue (peak at 456 nm), green (peak at 518 nm), red (peak at 654 nm) and blue-green combined (blue 456 nm : green 558 nm = 69:31) LED irradiation to pathogenic bacteria. For this, LED equipment providing power density of $10mW/cm^2$ was installed and plates were exposed to 0.9 or $3.0mW/cm^2$ to irradiate bacteria with 3.2 to $259.2mW/cm^2$ of energy density. As a result, blue and combined LED have shown bactericidal effects on Escherichia coli KCTC 1467 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 after irradiation of $3.0mW/cm^2$ for 2 and 4 hr, respectively. Staphylococcus aureus KCTC 1916 was inhibited at 518 nm green LED irradiation. However, red LED irradiation showed no inhibitory effect to the other tested strains. Light technology that utilizes the bactericidal properties of blue (at 456 nm) and blue-green(blue 456 nm : green 558 nm = 69:31) combined LED may have potential applications in the food industry sector.

  • This study has been carried out to determine the optimal process conditions of $AZO:H_2$ thin films for the maximization of the transmittance of a blue GaN light-emitting diode (LED) with a wavelength of 470 nm. The Al-doped zinc oxide $(AZO):H_2$ thin films were deposited on a sapphire substrate by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering system with varying substrate temperatures, working pressures and annealing temperatures temperature, working pressure and annealing imposed on a AZO (2wt% $Al_2O_3$) ceramic target. The effect of these variables was investigated in order to improve the light extraction efficiency of the LED. As a result, the (002)-oriented peak was found in all the $AZO:H_2$ thin films. The lowest resistivity and the best transmittance at a wavelength of 470 nm was found to be $4.774\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;{\Omega}cm$ and 92% at a substrate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$, working pressure of 7 mTorr and annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. The transmittance of the $AZO:H_2$ thin film for the Blue GaN LED was improved by approximately 13% relative to that of a ITO thin film (T = 79%).

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of light emitting diode (LED) irradiation on healing of impaired wound and alteration of mast cells in experimental diabetic rats. Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: excision (Ex), excision-LED irradiation (Ex-LED), diabetes + excision (DM) and diabetes + excision + LED irradiation (DM-LED). Diabetes was induced in rats by streptozotocin (STZ) injection (70 mg/kg, single dose) and 6 mm punch excision wounds were created on the back after shaving hair. The LED-irradiated rats were treated to a daily dose of $5\;J/cm^2$ LED (630 nm) light for 11 days after surgery, and were killed at day 1, 3, 7 and 11. The lesion and adjacent skin tissues were excised, fixed with 10% buffered formalin and embedded with paraffin. For evaluation of wound healing, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Masson trichrome staining were performed. Mast cells (MCs) were stained with toluidine blue (pH 0.5) and quantified using a computerized image analysis system. The proliferation activity of keratinocyte in skin tissues was analyzed on sections immunostained with proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). The results showed that wound healing rate, collagen density and neo-epidermis length, number of PCNA-positive cells, fibroblasts and mast cells were significantly higher in the LED-irradiated rats than in the DM and Ex rats throughout the periods of experiment. Exceptionally, the number of MCs was significantly lower at day 11 compared with day 7 after surgery in the all groups. These findings suggest that the LED irradiation may promote the tissue repair process by accelerating keratinocyte and fibroblast proliferation and collagen production in normal rats as well as in diabetic rats, and MCs may play an important role at an early stage of skin wound healing in normal and diabetic rats.

  • In this paper, we designed a new antireflective film to improve the optical efficiency of organic light-emitting diode displays (OLEDs). The reflection characteristics in the normal and side viewing directions of OLEDs with the antireflective film were calculated, depending on the degree of polarization and transmittance of the currently used polarizer when used in the antireflective film of an OLED. The results showed that when the polarization degree of the commercial polarizer (99.990~99.995%) is lowered to 99.900%, the average reflectance of the antireflective film is increased by about 0.1% (2.5% in terms of rate of increase) which is difficult to notice with the human eye, while the transmittance is increased by 1.63~3.34% (4.2~8.2% in terms of rate of increase). This study provides an optimal design for high-light-efficiency OLEDs with good antireflection properties.

  • Organic light-emitting diode(OLED) is very thin organic films which are hundreds of nanometers. Unlike bottom-emission OLED(BEOLED), top-emission OLED(TEOLED) emits light out the front, opaque moisture absorbents or metal foils can't be used to prevent moisture and oxygen. And it is difficult to have flexible characteristics with glass encapsulation, so thin film encapsulation which can compensate for those two disadvantages is mainly used. In this study, Al2O3 thin films by atomic layer deposition(ALD) were examined by changing the argon gas purge flow rate and we applied this Al2O3 thin films to the encapsulation of TEOLED. Ag / ITO / N,N'-Di-[(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl]-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine / tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum/ LiF / Mg:Ag (1:9) were used to fabricate OLED device. The characteristics such as brightness, current density, and power efficiency are compared. And it was confirmed that with a thickness of 40 nm Al2O3 thin film encapsulation process did not affect OLED properties. And it was enough to maintain a proper OLED operation for about 9 hours.

  • A series of new light-emitting random copolymers with fully conjugated structure was prepared, for the first time through the well-known Gilch polymerization between 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)-2-ethylhexyloxy-5-methoxybenzene and 2,5-bis(bromomethyl)thiophene monomers in different ratios. The synthesized polymers (on thin film) showed the maximum wavelength of UV-visible absorbance and photoluminescence (PL) near 500 nm and near 600 nm, respectively. A single-layer light-emitting diode device, which has a simple ITO (indium-tin oxide)/polymer/Al configuration, was fabricated by spin-coating of polymers and then vacuum evaporation of Al metal. The threshold bias of PMEHPVTVs was in the range of 3.5-10 V. As in the PL spectra, the maximum wavelength of light emission near 600 nm was also shown in electroluminescence (EL) spectra of PMEHPVTVs when the operating voltage was about 7 - 14 V.
